Book excerpt: In his new book, investment expert Jim Jubak explores the “new normal” of market volatility. With remarkable insights into the zeitgeist of financial markets and the economy, Jubak combines the big macro trends with the more mundane aspects of life to depict why volatility is here to stay, why things are not going to get any calmer soon, and how you can make investing decisions to profit off this new reality. He presents a unified picture that extends far beyond a narrow view of financial markets, exploring the consequences of using global central banks—the Federal Reserve, the Bank of Japan, the People's Bank of China, and the European Central Bank—as cash machines; the debt model of growth now used worldwide; and the demographics of aging and the coming war between the young and the old. He also looks at social trends including the anxiety of affluence, particularly the mismatch between the guaranteed cost of education and the uncertainty of future earnings; the real estate “barbell” and the consequences viewing a home as a financial asset and not simply a place to live; and energy, climate, water and food insecurity. Jubak's mission is to teach investors how to stay sane when people think the sky is falling. In showing what is causing all of this volatility, he provides practical solutions for how you can smartly respond, build a portfolio, and profit.

Book excerpt: Smoke and Mirrors, The Illusion of the Employment Services Sector pulls back the curtain on the dark side of outcome based, government funded employment services. Despite the billions of tax dollars invested, the sector itself has become a significant barrier to employment for underrepresented groups, the very populations it is funded to serve. With the demand for ‘good news!’ stories to propel governments to election wins, the problem is created by politicians, perpetuated by public servants, and sustained by employment service providers— all magicians behind the illusion. “Smoke and Mirrors” reveals the secrets that have perpetuated a broken employment system for at least 3 decades. Now is the time for the big reveal as never before has there been such interest in the future of work from so many players: government, employment service providers, education, industry, academia, evaluators, sector-specific associations, and business consultants. No doubt most of these players know the tricks and would like to be part of the solution. Although there is no silver bullet solution, there are things that can and must be done. In this book, Sarah and Angela present practical solutions - thrivival practices - to nudge the employment service sector in the right direction.

This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Investigation of the 16th-18th Century Puritan Vernacular Tradition argues that Puritan writers, specifically from the 17th to the 19th century, developed a collective vernacular which was intended to—in the words of John Milton—"justify the ways of God to man." However, their phrases (much like the Puritans themselves) never achieved a sufficient level of uniformity. As a result, their verbiage, though quite often similar, the manner in which it is used frequently differs. Puritan authors' routine suggestion that certain circumstances "pleased God" began as an attempt with which to interpret God's involvement in their day-to-day lives. However, as time passed, these interpretations became further removed from the Scripture and ultimately functioned as a way for writers to indict God when things badly or to praise him only when he showed them favor.

Book excerpt: Just as Minneapolis songwriter Jon Wayne’s music career is taking off in the summer of 2008, his life is falling apart. He’s homeless and begging on the streets, addicted to heroin, cocaine, alcohol and whatever other poison he’s putting into his body. He’ll overdose three times that summer before embarking on his seventh trip to rehab. As he begins his newfound sobriety on Sept. 14, 2008, he knows getting clean has to stick this time because it’s no longer a choice of whether or not to get high; it’s a choice of life or death. Growing up in bucolic Jamestown, North Dakota, Wayne enters rehab for the first time at 18 after a brief yet voracious dance with cocaine addiction. His struggles with addiction and sobriety will take him to Fargo, where he parties, delivers pizzas and attends chef school, and ultimately to Minneapolis, where he makes music – forming reggae band Jon Wayne and the Pain in 2006 – and discovers heroin, the answer to the ever-present voice in his head. One More Trip is one man’s story of survival and redemption set against the backdrop of a non-stop music career in a drug-prone work zone. Author Thom Wilder weaves the inspirational tale of Jon Wayne’s moment of truth in overcoming addiction, changing his life, correcting his mistakes and making amends.

The only place he can find solace is Scrubs—a 24/7 laundromat where he can disappear for a couple of hours. But Lucas’s soapy sanctuary is shaken by an inquisitive little girl with a late-night interest in knitting, whose mother is his old school crush. Sydney Harris knows that Harlem is like any other small town, and everyone is probably whispering about how she left such a good man—and a good life—behind to wash and fold laundry by the pound. If only they knew the truth. But Sydney will always put her daughter’s happiness first, even if that means moving back to Harlem and facing her past. What Sydney never expected was to see Lucas again. A long-forgotten attraction kicks into high gear as Lucas and Sydney start to spend time together at the laundromat, and they must decide if this is true love or just an infatuation, thin and fragile as a soap bubble.

Book excerpt: Beginning with studio practices and safety rules, this information-packed handbook is appropriate for both newcomers and experienced dyers but assumes that readers have a serious interest in textile design. An overview of dyeing starts with fibers and fabrics and discusses all aspects of the dyes favored by textile studios--fiber reactive, acid, vat, and disperse--before explaining discharging, screen printing, monoprinting, stamping, stenciling, resist dyeing, devore, and painting. Would-be fabric artists are advised along the way to identify a personal approach to dyeing--free spirit? rule-follower?--and color photographs of work by today's top fiber artists elucidate prevailing styles. Recipes and techniques are accompanied by step-by-step instructions with photographs, and a concealed spiral binding allows the book to lie flat. Ten appendices include a worksheet for recording chemicals, procedures, and costs for all projects; a guide to washing fabric; descriptions of stock solutions, thickeners, and steaming; a metric conversion table; and a guide to water temperatures.
