Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rights of the Clergy Vindicated: Or, Plea for Canon Law in the United States It gives me much pleasure to announce to the venerable hierarchy of the United States a Second Edition of the rights OF the clergy vindicated. That my humble work has done much good, and is yet destined to do still more, is abundantly evident from the numerous letters received from every part of the United States from Clergymen of standing, many of them vener able for their years, and well known for their piety and love of Mother Church, who rejoiced in fervent and elo quent words, that this canker of uncanonical treatment of priests, which was doing so much harm to'the Church in this land, was laid Open to the gaze of all. It required indeed some courage to apply the knife to it, but it is a satisfaction for me to know from the approbation my work has almost universally received from the clergy that it was not applied unskillfully. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1790 came that "extraordinary outburst of passionate intelligence," Mary Wollstonecraft's reply to Edmund Burke's attack on the principles of the French Revolution entitled a "Vindication of the Rights of Men." In this pamphlet she held up to scorn Burke's defence of monarch and nobility, his merciless sentimentality. "It is one of the most dashing political polemics in the language," Mr. Taylor writes enthusiastically, "and has not had the attention it deserves. . . . For sheer virility and grip of her verbal instruments it is probably the finest of her works. Some of her sentences have the quality of a sword-edge, and they flash with the rapidity of a practised duellist. It was written at a white heat of indignation; yet it is altogether typical of the writer that, in the midst of the work, quite suddenly, she had one of her fits of callousness and morbid temper, and declared she would not go on. With great skill Johnson persuaded her to take it up again; and with equal suddenness her eagerness returned, and the book was finished and published before any one else could answer Burke."

Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
