Download or read book Black Baseball written by Kyle McNary and published by Sterling Publishing Company, Inc.. This book was released on 2006-03-28 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first Black amateur players before the Civil War through to the last barnstorming Negro League teams in the 1960s, here is the complete and utterly fascinating history of segregated baseball in the United States. Thanks to photographs of the major players and many first-hand accounts, baseball fans will get the full story of this tumultuous time, behind the scenes and out in the ballparks. Every detail is revealed, starting with that sad day in 1911 when the governing body of the National Association of Baseball Players voted unanimously to bar any club that signed an African-American. Meet the many players, including George Stovey, Sol White, and Welday Walker, who blazed the way for Jackie Robinson to integrate major league baseball in 1947. Feel the frustration felt by the players when they were denied hotel rooms and restaurant service while on the road. Every image and tale also conveys the joy of the game and the pride these men felt in playing professional baseball.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ISRAEL; the people, the nation, the religion. While remaining acutely aware of the shortcomings of both Heidegger and Derrida, the writer nevertheless uses insights and terminology from their discourse in the service of exposing the historical and thought trends of hegemonic proportions which have had the effect of deracinating Judaism from ISRAEL. The writer makes the claim that a "critical/spelunkative" analysis of what went into that final and anonymous redaction of the Babylonian Talmud points the way towards a retrieval of Judaism's "burning living center." The writer further contends that such a retrieval can have the effect of "returning" [teshuba] Judaism back to ISRAEL.

Book Synopsis Choosing the Right College by : Intercollegiate Studies Institute
Download or read book Choosing the Right College written by Intercollegiate Studies Institute and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his introduction, former drug czar William J. Bennett supports this reference for its "tough-minded analysis of the quality of instruction, the level of academic standards, the campus political atmosphere, and the extent to which the liberal arts tradition is respected...." These evaluations are intended to help conservative parents and students steer away from colleges whose programs lean too heavily toward the political left; in effect, conversely, it can also help liberal-minded folk find the less tradition-bound schools. Entries describe and assess 110 top colleges and universities in essays of about 3,000 words, focusing on the school's academic, political, and social climates. They name outstanding professors, describe curricula, comment on the administration's policies towards issues such as sexual harassment and free speech, and describe the range of student organizations and activities found on campus. Quotes from students and professors are included. Entries also include information on tuition, enrollment, and SAT scores. This second edition contains 10 more essays, updated coverage of every school, a new essay on liberal learning, and increased coverage of student life. c. Book News Inc.

Download or read book Right of Way written by Angie Schmitt and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The face of the pedestrian safety crisis looks a lot like Ignacio Duarte-Rodriguez. The 77-year old grandfather was struck in a hit-and-run crash while trying to cross a high-speed, six-lane road without crosswalks near his son’s home in Phoenix, Arizona. He was one of the more than 6,000 people killed while walking in America in 2018. In the last ten years, there has been a 50 percent increase in pedestrian deaths. The tragedy of traffic violence has barely registered with the media and wider culture. Disproportionately the victims are like Duarte-Rodriguez—immigrants, the poor, and people of color. They have largely been blamed and forgotten. In Right of Way, journalist Angie Schmitt shows us that deaths like Duarte-Rodriguez’s are not unavoidable “accidents.” They don’t happen because of jaywalking or distracted walking. They are predictable, occurring in stark geographic patterns that tell a story about systemic inequality. These deaths are the forgotten faces of an increasingly urgent public-health crisis that we have the tools, but not the will, to solve. Schmitt examines the possible causes of the increase in pedestrian deaths as well as programs and movements that are beginning to respond to the epidemic. Her investigation unveils why pedestrians are dying—and she demands action. Right of Way is a call to reframe the problem, acknowledge the role of racism and classism in the public response to these deaths, and energize advocacy around road safety. Ultimately, Schmitt argues that we need improvements in infrastructure and changes to policy to save lives. Right of Way unveils a crisis that is rooted in both inequality and the undeterred reign of the automobile in our cities. It challenges us to imagine and demand safer and more equitable cities, where no one is expendable.
