Book excerpt: The eleven essays in this volume offer diverse approaches to very different landscapes. Yet they agree in viewing medieval western European landscape as artifact, as territiry constructed by medieval people on several interrelated levels. By helping to articulate how places came to be managed, created, and imagined, they offer their readers a much better apprecitaion of what might be called a "deep ecology" of the Middle Ages. --introd.
Book Synopsis Reforming the Church before Modernity by : Christopher M. Bellitto
Download or read book Reforming the Church before Modernity written by Christopher M. Bellitto and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reforming the Church before Modernity considers the question of ecclesial reform from late antiquity to the 17th century, and tackles this complex question from primarily cultural perspectives, rather than the more usual institutional approaches. The common themes are social change, centres and peripheries of change, monasticism, and intellectuals and their relationship to reform. This innovative approach opens up the question of how religious reform took place and challenges existing ecclesiological models that remains too focussed on structures in a manner artificial for pre-modern Europe. Several chapters specifically take issue with the problem of what constitutes reform, reformations, and historians' notions of the periodization of reform, while in others the relationship between personal transformation and its broader social, political or ecclesial context emerges as a significant dynamic. Presenting essays from a distinguished international cast of scholars, the book makes an important contribution to the debates over ecclesiology and religious reform stimulated by the anniversary of Vatican II.

Book excerpt: African Francophone Writing presents a comprehensive overview of African writing in the Francophone literary world. It explores the work of important classic and contemporary African writers from the 1950s to the present who, until recently, have received little critical attention. The contributors view their subjects from a diverse range of critical perspectives -- historical, thematic, psychoanalytic, feminist and post-colonial -- to provide a variety of theoretically sophisticated analyses of Francophone writing. A comprehensive introduction and an extensive chronological table are included. African Francophone literature is rapidly becoming a major discipline in universities in Britain and North America. This book will provide much needed critical material for students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. [Well-known authors studied in this book include: Chraïbi, Memmi and Boudjedra in the Maghreb; Sembène, Kourouma and Adiaffi in sub-Saharan Africa; Begag and Cherif from the 'Beur' community; and women writers such as Debèche, Fall and Bâ.]

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Medieval Pilgrimage by : Larissa Taylor
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Medieval Pilgrimage written by Larissa Taylor and published by Brill Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 835 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Encyclopedia of Medieval Pilgrimage" is an interdisciplinary reference work, giving wide coverage of the role of travel in medieval religious life. Dealing with the period 300-1500 A.D., it offers both basic data on as broad a range of European pilgrimage as possible and clearly written, self-contained introductions to the general questions of pilgrimage research. Also available online as part of "Brill's Medieval Reference Library Online" (BRMLO) - Webpage BRMLO. Despite widespread modern interest in medieval pilgrimage and related issues, no comprehensive work of this type exists and it will be of interest to scholars and students for personal and academic use. Local sites of pilgrimage are represented in this work as well as the main routes to Rome, Jerusalem and Santiago. Written and material sources relating to pilgrimage are used to illustrate aspects of medieval society, from brewing, book production and the trade in relics, to the development of the towns, art, architecture and literature which pilgrimage engendered. The Encyclopedia of Medieval Pilgrimage will serve as the main starting point for any serious study of this phenomenon. The Encyclopedia of Medieval Pilgrimage is published in English in one illustrated volume of 550,000 words in 435 signed entries, and is compiled and written by over 180 contributors from Europe and North America. Entries are present alphabetically under headwords, with cross-references, maps, black-and-white illustrations, an editorial introduction and lists of theme and keywords.

Book Synopsis The History of Courts and Procedure in Medieval Canon Law by : Wilfried Hartmann
Download or read book The History of Courts and Procedure in Medieval Canon Law written by Wilfried Hartmann and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of the thirteenth century, court procedure in continental Europe in secular and ecclesiastical courts shared many characteristics. As the academic jurists of the Ius commune began to excavate the norms of procedure from Justinian's great codification of law and then to expound them in the classroom and in their writings, they shaped the structure of ecclesiastical courts and secular courts as well. These essays also illuminate striking differences in the sources that we find in different parts of Europe. In northern Europe the archives are rich but do not always provide the details we need to understand a particular case. In Italy and Southern France the documentation is more detailed than in other parts of Europe but here too the historical records do not answer every question we might pose to them. In Spain, detailed documentation is strangely lacking, if not altogether absent. Iberian conciliar canons and tracts on procedure tell us much about practice in Spanish courts. As these essays demonstrate, scholars who want to peer into the medieval courtroom, must also read letters, papal decretals, chronicles, conciliar canons, and consilia to provide a nuanced and complete picture of what happened in medieval trials. This volume will give sophisticated guidance to all readers with an interest in European law and courts.
Download or read book Inspector Ali written by Driss Chraïbi and published by Three Continents. This book was released on 1994 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "After many years abroad, the narrator, Brahim, with his much beloved Scottish wife and two very peppy boys, returns to his home village, El Jadida, in Morocco. Having invented an alter-ego, Inspector Ali, now becoming an incubus, he finds himself "adrift" if "world famous" as the author of the too scrutible, but very Sherlockian sleuth, with great solutions to crimes to his credit." "Then arrive Jock and Susan, his wife's parents from Scotland, loaded down with golf clubs and nervous expectations of a mysterious land." "Islam, bankers, a statuesque cook-maid, bureaucrats, students, bakers, butchers, aging Mercedes taxi drivers, nostalgia, writers bloc, all invade and saturate this volume, crosscutting into the narrative."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book A Contrite Heart written by Abigail Firey and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the middle of the eighth century and the late ninth century in western Europe, the course of legal history was shaped by interaction with religious ideas, especially with regard to the meaning of confession, suffering, and the balance of protections for an accused individual and the welfare of the community. This book traces those themes through a selection of Carolingian texts, such as archbishop Hincmar's legal analysis of a royal divorce, the decrees of church councils, the biography of a Saxon holy woman, anti-Judaic treatises, and Hrotswitha's dramatisation of the legend of Thaïs, in order to make audible the lively debates over the boundaries of clerical and lay authority, the nature and extent of permissible intervention in the spiritual condition of the empire's inhabitants, and distinctions between the private and public domains. This work thus reveals the profound relation between law and penitential ideologies promoted by the Carolingian imperial court.

Book excerpt: Contains a bibliographical survey of the chronological and systematic canonical collections in the Latin West from the beginnings of Christianity to Gratian's Decretum (ca. 1140). Dr. Kéry not only has compiled a catalogue of early medieval canonistic manuscripts, but has included valuable information about them. For each collection she has described its type and contents, the time and place of compilation, and, when, possible, its author. Full bibliographies have been provided for each collection, arranged in chronological order. Scholars will find her work particularly useful since she has also noted where scholars have differed and where their opinions may be found. Special attention has been paid to the numerous recensions of the collections. She has given a separate entry for important recensions and has lists of fragments and abbreviated forms of the collections.
