Book excerpt: In the summer of 2007, the author departs on a self-supported bicycle journey across Finland, Lapland and Arctic Norway with the goal of pedaling to the Barents Sea. More than a travelogue, Riding with Reindeer intersperses an often humorous narrative about the author's adventures (he gets trapped in a woman's shower in one remote village) with rich cultural and historical anecdotes, while providing insight into the soul of a region whose honest and resourceful, yet often taciturn, citizens are always willing to lend a helping hand to the stranger on the little blue folding bicycle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relying on a hidden camera, a bluff and a little bit of luck, award-winning investigative journalist Rich Hardy finds imaginative ways to meet the people and industries responsible for the lives and deaths of the billions of animals used to feed, clothe and entertain us. What he discovers will shock, but it may just inspire you to re-evaluate your relationship with all animals and what role you let them play in your life. Sometimes dangerous, often emotional and occasionally surreal, this one-of-a-kind perspective examines what it’s like to live and work amongst your adversaries and what you can achieve if you feel strongly enough about something. ‘Cruelty to animals goes on daily behind the closed doors of factory farms or deep in the forests where wild animals are trapped for their fur. Rich’s book exposes us to the raw truth behind these animal trades. Whilst it’s a deeply personal story, it has the potential to change, not just your own life, but the lives of millions of animals. I urge you to read it!’ Joanna Lumley, Actress, author and activist 'An incredible and moving exposé of the horror that animals go through to create a product that destroys the environment & keeps people sick and miserable.’ Moby, Musician and activist ‘It is beautifully and lucidly written...it avoids gratuitous expression but delivers the truth in a compelling and penetrating narrative. Not As Nature Intended is a must read.’ Peter Egan, Actor and animal advocate 'A 007 of the animal world.’ Rhian Lubin, The Daily Mirror ‘As you read this book, if you have a heart and a soul, you too won't fail to be bowled over by Rich's courage.’ Jane Dalton, The Independent ‘All the evidence we need to make our future a plant-based one.’ Christina Rees MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Vegetarianism and Veganism ‘An eye-opening insight into the horrors endured by animals around the world - and into the minds of those who risk everything to help them.’ Maria Chiorando, Plant Based News

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rock art found in the World Heritage sites in the Alta area, Arctic Norway, comprise thousands of images including reindeer and elk as well as fish, birds, boats, humans and geometric patterns. They contain information about peoples who lived in this northern area from about 5000 BC up until the birth of Christ; such as possible social organizations, hunting and trapping, beliefs, rituals, stories, legends, myths, cultural changes and continuities. Communicating with the world of beings addresses an understanding of the rock art in terms of communication with other people and other than-human beings. The figures could have been seen and experienced as symbols in rituals or as expressions of identity, position, power and rights, as depictions of real events and perhaps for use in storytelling. Through rock art, people might also have been able to communicate with other-than-human beings who ruled parts of the environment – in order to petition favors for themselves or others. These other-than-human beings may have been perceived as good and evil powers and spirits of the different worlds of the universe; the dead or souls; which also included the animals depicted or were even embodied in the stone. This communication may have been based on a belief that both living beings and inert objects and natural phenomena had souls, a belief that may have existed ever since the earliest settlements. Such an animistic belief means that everything was seen as having a consciousness and identity of its own, independent and imbued with a will. Therefore, it was essential that the different participants communicated with one another as equal partners. In this beautifully illustrated book Knut Helskog provides a lyrical and personal interpretation of the chronology, patterning and possible meanings behind this extraordinary landscape of prehistoric rock art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 18th century, researchers and scientists have traveled the peninsula of Kamchatka in the Russian Far East. Many of them were of German origin and had been commissioned by the Russian government to perform specific tasks. Their exhaustive descriptions and detailed reports are still considered some of the most valuable documents on the ethnography of the indigenous peoples of that part of the world. These works inform us about living conditions and particular ways of natural resource use at various times, and provide us with valuable background information for current assessment. As the first profound anthropological descriptions of that region, the publications of the Jesup North Pacific Expedition, undertaken in the first years of the 20th century, marked the beginning of a new era of research in Russia. They represented a shift of the already existing transnational research networks toward North America. Jochelson’s work The Koryak was an important milestone for Russian and North American anthropology that provides to this day a unique contribution to thoroughly understanding the cultures of the North Pacific rim.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis by Vladimir Beregovoy Notes of an East Siberian Hunter by A. A. Cherkassov is among the oldest bestsellers in Russia, in print since 1865. This book has often been called an encyclopedia of hunting in nineteenth century East Siberia. It has been cherished and read and reread by generations of hunters and naturalists. It was my dream to share its content with the world outside Russia. I met Steve Bodio*, who is also a naturalist and a professional writer with experience in hunting and Russian literature and history. Working together, we completed its first translation into English. The book is narrated in a lively, colloquial Siberian folk dialect; we tried to preserve it as much as possible. Its content includes meticulous descriptions of hunting methods, wildlife, ways of life, customs and even superstitions common among Russian frontiersmen and the native people of East Siberia in the nineteenth Century. It will be a good reference for historians, biologists, geographers, ethnographers, hunters, linguists and serious environmentalists. V.
