At the 90-mile vet check she sat in the middle of the road crying, claiming extreme illness and trying to avoid her nightmarish fears her horse would die of founder or colic, or anything. The last ten miles of trail stretched forever in her mind, black like licorice taffy. After a large measure of TLC from her patient and understanding crew, she and the gelding were out of the check and on the trail again. The entire universe shrank to center on the pair in the moonlight. Time stopped and the world faded into nothingness. They were running in a small, ever-changing pocket of existence, the rhythm of his hooves, the heartbeat of that universe. Ribbons and trail appeared before them and lost substance as they moved past. For the rider, clinging to the saddle, there was no thought, no pain, no emotion, only the instinctive drive to chase past each ribbon as it appeared. Suddenly her horse jumped sideways, eyes and ears frozen forward. Awakened from her trance, she oriented herself on his suspected woods troll, a familiar embankment that meant they were a half-mile from home. Easing him past the scary object, she sent the gelding on, clinging to his neck. As his soft lope swept them across the finish line, she wanted to laugh out loud or cry, but was unable to summon the strength for either. A few small tears trickled down her cheek, the only sign of the enormous pride she felt inside. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equestrian pursuit known as Cowboy Dressage melds the best of Western riding traditions and classical dressage in the pursuit of a harmonious relationship with a horse. Intended to be accessible to all, Cowboy Dressage is open to all breeds and all levels of riders; there isn’t a set frame for overall look, head carriage, or action. Lifelong horsewoman Jessica Black traces the evolution of Cowboy Dressage back to its roots, sharing the story of Eitan and Debbie Beth-Halachmy and their phenomenal Morgan horses that have served as the movement’s ambassadors. Black then expertly weaves Eitan Beth-Halachmy's experience and expertise into an engaging and articulate explanation of the philosophy of Cowboy Dressage; defines the expectations of the rider; describes what a participant needs in terms of equipment; and explores how the most important element—the horse—should be prepared. A wonderful and thorough section on groundwork, as well as specific training advice for achieving engagement, regulating the gaits, smoothing transitions, and balancing bend and straightness, get the reader started with a solid foundation. Specific descriptions of the Cowboy Dressage tests are provided, with additional tools for those interested in competition, including rules, divisions, and how to execute and judge tests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kit’s attempts to fit in at Covington go off course when her horse, TK, is sold. Can she find him and bring him home, or will she have to get back in the saddle — on a new horse? Life’s been difficult enough since American teen Kit Bridges moved to England with her dad to start their new life at The Covington Academy, an elite equestrian boarding school. Her roommate, Anya, turned out to be an Indian princess — a secret Anya didn’t bother to confide to Kit before fleeing Covington, seemingly for good. The boys in England are charming, but they’re too busy fighting for Kit’s attention, and she’s focused on the only one who really made Kit feel like she belonged: wild, unruly horse TK. But TK behaved so badly at the House Cup that the headmistress, Lady Covington, sold him and sent him away from the school. If Kit could only find the bill of sale, maybe she could find out where TK is, bring him back, and convince everyone to give him a second chance. Then again, second chances aren’t exactly Covington’s specialty.

Book excerpt: From humble beginnings in wartime Peckham, where his first memories are of being carried down into the air-raid shelter by his mother, Phil Harris would go on to transform his father's market stall into Britain's biggest carpet retail chain, himself becoming one of the richest people in the country, a member of the House of Lords and a passionate supporter of charitable causes. An extraordinary retailer, largely instinctive with an exceptional feel for what the customer wanted, Harris and his astonishing business career, with its ups and downs, are the central themes to the book. Today he is as well-known for his charitable work. Severely dyslexic himself, with Tony Blair's personal support Lord Harris created the first academy school in London. There are now thirty-five Harris Academy schools, and it was David Cameron's relationship with Lord Harris that persuaded the former PM to espouse the academy school so enthusiastically. These, then, are the fascinating memoirs of one of the country's greatest entrepreneurs and philanthropists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With proper training, any horse can become a great riding companion out on the trail. It's a matter of learning how to adapt your experience to your particular horse. Fully illustrated lessons in trail riding start with the differences in working with a retired jumper, an actively competing reiner, or even a natural-born trail horse. The section on riding techniques helps you use what you already know from hunter-jumper, dressage, or other experiences. Both solitary and group riding get special attention, as does handling different types of parks and paths. The full range of possible spooking challenges covers encountering animals, heavy traffic, weather, and children, as well as tripping, hoof injuries, mounting and dismounting in unusual situations, and other emergencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first academic book-length study devoted to Karl May festivals, a specific type of Wild-West-themed festivals that take place in Germany every summer, Blood Brothers and Peace Pipes introduces readers to a performance world that is popular at home yet virtually unknown elsewhere. Named for Karl May (1842-1912), arguably the most famous German writer of adventure fiction in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, these thirteen or so festivals dramatize the exploits of May's most famous Wild West heroes, the Mescalero Apache Winnetou and his blood-brother, the German frontiersman Old Shatterhand, in entertaining theatre plays that use horses, other animals, stunts, and special effects on outdoors stages built specifically for them. Based on ethnographic studies of six of these events, Weber explores the most fundamental features of Karl May festivals: their "Indian" iconographies, fraternity narratives, hybrid genre form, borrowings from U.S. Wild West shows, and performative diversity. Her narrative accounts of these festivals and their interdisciplinary analysis based on German literature and culture studies, folklore, ethnography, and performance studies, theatre studies, and history guide readers through a specifically German performance world that is not an upshot of the American western, but a homegrown, traditional German version that evolved parallel with it. The composite image of Karl May festivals that emerges in the course of Weber's analysis is that of a unique type of popular event that expresses a deep yearning in German society, that for egalitarian and respectful cross-cultural interactions.
