Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Riddles, Rhyme and Alliteration" is an activity-based resource that encourages children aged 4-7 years to concentrate, listen to and discriminate between different speech sounds. Teachers can use the material separately or as part of a phonics programme, as each activity has the flexibility to be used with individuals, groups or whole classes. Older children who have listening and auditory discrimination difficulties, poor listening skills, and mild to moderate hearing loss or 'glue ear' can also benefit from using the material. Each of the eighteen sections is based on a particular phoneme and includes two or three pages of illustrations to accompany the activities. The activities are photocopiable and include: riddles which can be solved with the help of the picture pages; exercises on alliteration and rhyming words; tongue twisters; a story containing words beginning with the target phonemes; and a puzzle worksheet based on some of the words from the picture pages. All of the activities have clear instructions and are presented orally by the teacher, except the puzzle worksheets that encourage the child to work independently. The picture pages can also be coloured in at school or at home to help consolidate what has been taught. Written by a teacher for teachers, "Riddles, Rhyme and Alliteration" will prove a welcome resource for those who have limited time for preparation.

Book excerpt: If John Lennon, Gertrude Stein, Stephen Hawking, and Mother Goose had conspired to write a grammar book, GRAM-O-RAMA would be it. Designed for word-lovers and students in the classroom, this textbook contains dozens of unconventional exercises geared toward learning grammar. Its interactive method offers students and teachers a smart and accessible approach by encouraging writers to experiment with grammatical functions, style, rhythm, and sound. "Beware, GRAM-O-RAMA is a dangerous book. It takes the cautions and rules of grammar and drops them into a fun house. I experienced many of these exercises in Daphne's class and still find myself relying on their lessons today. You could make a movie of this book. Or at least a theme park ride!" -Dave Krinsky, executive producer of TV series, King of the Hill and screenwriter for Blades of Glory "Daphne Athas sets words ablaze and puts sentences in flight. Every student and every teacher, every writer and every editor, could benefit from her visionary eye and musical ear." -Alane Salierno Mason, senior editor, W. W. Norton & Company, founding editor of www.wordswithoutborders.org "This book is not only charming and amusing, but profound in the way it forces the reader to see our language afresh, as something alive and throbbing with possibilities. Indispensable reading." -Randall Kenan , associate professor of English, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, author of A Visitation of Spirits "Not your grandma's grammar, these irresistible exercises prod and provoke, delight and inspire. They rattle students (and teachers) out of boredom, apathy, and fear and awaken them to the power and possibilities of language." -Elizabeth Moose, instructor of English, North Carolina School of Science and Math

This book was released on 2022-12-05 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of thirteen chapters answers new questions about rhyme, with views from folklore, ethnopoetics, the history of literature, literary criticism and music criticism, psychology and linguistics. The book examines rhyme as practiced or as understood in English, Old English and Old Norse, German, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish and Karelian, Estonian, Medieval Latin, Arabic, and the Central Australian language Kaytetye. Some authors examine written poetry, including modernist poetry, and others focus on various kinds of sung poetry, including rap, which now has a pioneering role in taking rhyme into new traditions. Some authors consider the relation of rhyme to other types of form, notably alliteration. An introductory chapter discusses approaches to rhyme, and ends with a list of languages whose literatures or song traditions are known to have rhyme.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Kassel (Institut f r Anglistik und Amerikanistik), 16 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Riddles and rhymes are very common in English speaking countries; they are even part of oral lore among children and students. True riddles or punning ones with a word of two uses are very popular, i.e. "What runs but never walks? - A river."1 Although they are regarded as special forms funny puzzles, enigmas and sayings were also an important element of poetic diction throughout the history of literature. Old English prose and verse are considered to be the oldest literature written in vernacular, although Latin and Germanic influence is apparent in the Old English language. During the Anglo-Saxon Period and especially under Alfred, King of Wessex, Old English language and poetry reached its highpoint. At this time the clergy was considered as the intellectual elite and so poetry was composed in monasteries and the so called "writing-rooms". The surviving manuscripts include heroic, elegiac and religious elements, as in the Beowulf poem, The Seafarer and The Dream of the Rood. Old English riddles can be found in The Book of Exeter anthology. The collection includes about ninety riddles with heroic, religious and philosophical elements. This special form of poetic diction provides characteristic stylistic devices like alliterative verse and kenning. Besides that, the enigmas had a didactic purpose, as they were intended for religious and linguistic learning at the monastery schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the United Kingdom Literacy Association's Author Award 2011 for its contribution to extending children's literacy. Praise for the book: 'This book is about making readers. A compact summary of its contents would not do it justice. It is the accountof a life's work and it deserves thanks and readers. *****'. - Margaret Meek, Books for Keeps on-line, Number 185, November 2010. 'This book is a cornucopia of varied pleasures, offering something for all tastes, presented with an awareness of the complexities of the field and communicated with commitment, enthusiasm and deep knowledge'. - Eve Bearne, English 4-11, the primary school journal of The English Association, Number 42, Summer 2011. Choosing and Using Fiction and Non-Fiction 3-11 is a guide to the many kinds of text we want children to encounter, use and enjoy during their nursery and primary school years. So children’s non-fiction literature – including autobiography, biography, information and reference texts – is given equal status with fiction – nursery rhymes, picturebooks, novels, traditional tales, playscripts and poetry. The author addresses important issues and allows the voices of teachers, reviewers and children to be heard. The book supports teachers as they help children on their journey to becoming insightful and critical readers of non-fiction and sensitive and reflective readers of fiction. It also contains suggestions for practice which are in the spirit of the more flexible and creative approach to learning towards which primary schools are moving. It includes: help on using criteria to select quality texts of all kinds; annotated booklists for each kind of text for different age groups; suggestions for keeping a balance between print and screen-based texts; case studies showing teachers and children using texts in interesting and imaginative ways to support learning in English lessons and across the curriculum; advice on developing children’s visual and multimodal literacy; guidance on using the school library and embedding study skills in children’s wider purposes and learning; critiques of key theoretical perspectives and research projects. Although the main readership will be primary and student teachers, it is hoped that the book will be of interest and use to anyone concerned with the role of texts in children’s learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides a wide-ranging, authoritative, and cutting-edge overview of language and persuasion. Featuring a range of international contributors, the handbook outlines the basic materials of linguistic persuasion – sound, words, syntax, and discourse – and the rhetorical basics that they enable, such as appeals, argument schemes, arrangement strategies, and accommodation devices. After a comprehensive introduction that brings together the elements of linguistics and the vectors of rhetoric, the handbook is divided into six parts. Part I covers the basic rhetorical appeals to character, the emotions, argument schemes, and types of issues that constitute persuasion. Part II covers the enduring effects of persuasive language, from humor to polarization, while a special group of chapters in Part III examines figures of speech and their rhetorical uses. In Part IV, contributors focus on different fields and genres of argument as entry points for research into conventions of arguing. Part V examines the evolutionary and developmental roots of persuasive language, and Part VI highlights new computational methods of language analysis. This handbook is essential reading for those researching and studying persuasive language in the fields of linguistics, rhetoric, argumentation, communication, discourse studies, political science, psychology, digital studies, mass media, and journalism.

Book excerpt: R.E.A.D will help educators turn their students into strategic readers. It presents a collection of strategies based on the 5 + 2 essential elements of literacy instruction: oral language, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. Each section contains a brief conceptual overview as well as specific strategies that can be used to facilitate the development of that literacy process. A graphic at the beginning of each strategy identifies when it should be used, the most appropriate group size, and the grade levels for which it would be most applicable. Additional references and/or other resources are also provided at the end of each strategy description to provide educators with more information.
