Book excerpt: She was a wonderful child -- charming, gifted, full of energy -- and she seemed to have a wonderful life ahead of her. Then the incomprehensible happened. At age 13, Rickie was diagnosed schizophrenic, removed from her caring family, and condemned to long, heartbreaking years in mental institutions. This is the spellbinding story of Rickie's agonizing odyssey through illness and recovery, told by her father, internationally renowned psychiatrist Frederic Flach, and enriched with Rickie's own recollections. Indeed, part of the tragedy for Rickie and her family was the many years lost because the medical community of which her father is a distinguished member was unable to bring her back to health. For anyone whose family has ever been touched by crisis, RICKIE is an unforgettably moving and powerfully uplifting book. "A touching story." -- The New York Times Book Review

Book excerpt: A candid and colorful memoir by the singer, songwriter, and “Duchess of Coolsville” (Time). This troubadour life is only for the fiercest hearts, only for those vessels that can be broken to smithereens and still keep beating out the rhythm for a new song . . . Last Chance Texaco is the first-ever no-holds-barred account of the life of two-time Grammy Award-winner and Rickie Lee Jones in her own words (Hilton Als). It is a tale of desperate chances and impossible triumphs, an adventure story of a girl who beat the odds and grew up to become one of the most legendary artists of her time, turning adversity and hopelessness into timeless music. With candor and lyricism, she takes us on a singular journey through her nomadic childhood, her years as a teenage runaway, her legendary love affair with Tom Waits, and ultimately her longevity as the hardest working woman in rock and roll. Rickie Lee’s stories are rich with the infamous characters of her early songs—“Chuck E’s in Love,” “Weasel and the White Boys Cool,” “Danny’s All-Star Joint,” and “Easy Money”—but long before her notoriety in show business, there was a vaudevillian cast of hitchhikers, bank robbers, jail breaks, drug mules, and a pimp with a heart of gold, and tales of her fabled ancestors. This intimate memoir by one of the most trailblazing and tenacious women in music is filled with never-before-told stories of the girl in the raspberry beret, whose songs defied categorization and inspired American pop culture for decades. “A striking, distinctive self-portrait.” —The New York Times “Terrific . . . Jones is as fearless in prose as she is on stage.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune “Men leave, fame fizzles, family breaks your heart . . . but Jones knows a good story and how to tell it.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “[The] premiere song-stylist and songwriter of her generation.” —Hilton Als, Pulitzer Prize–winner and author of White Girls

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He's the leader of America's exciting new wave of golfing superstars. Young, fun and gifted, Rickie Fowler has taken the sport to a younger audience in the States - making headlines as much for his wacky dress sense and YouTube spoofs as for his God-given prowess with a golf club.Twenty-six-year-old Fowler, is America's answer to Rory McIlroy, and together they represent the gifted faces of golf for a new era: two young men destined to contest a Trans-Atlantic rivalry for that coveted World No. 1 spot. But it was motocross that was Rickie's first love. He had dreams of making his name as a racer until he broke his foot in three places at the age of fifteen. Then on, he focused purely on golf, winning tournament after tournament in high school, until, in 2007, he was chosen for the US's Walker Cup team and a year later became the first university freshman ever to be awarded the NCAA Player of the Year.Such was his burgeoning talent that in 2010 he also went on to become the first American rookie to be selected for the Ryder Cup and in 2014, he became only the third golfer ever to finish in the Top 5 at all four professional majors in the same season, following in the illustrious footsteps of Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. He was moving ever closer to that first major victory as he and McIlroy continued to trade shots and tweets at courses around the world for the ultimate golfing honours. But for all his colourful clothes and joking around with fellow 'brat pack' member Bubba Watson, Rickie has a much more serious, emotional and intellectual side to his character. In this compelling first biography on the figurehead of US golf's young guns, Frank Worrall provides a fascinating portrayal of Rickie Fowler as both a fun-loving yet altruistic human being and a single-minded golfing superstar.

Book excerpt: "Like Ripley, [Highsmith's characters] burn in a reader's memory."—Susan Salters Reynolds, Los Angeles Times Book Review In unmistakable Highsmithian fashion, Small g, Patricia Highsmith's final novel, opens near a seedy Zurich bar with the brutal murder of Petey Ritter. Unraveling the vagaries of love, sexuality, jealousy, and death, Highsmith weaves a mystery both hilarious and astonishing, a classic fairy tale executed with a characteristic penchant for darkness. Published in paperback for the first time in America, Small g is at once an exorcism of Highsmith's literary demons and a revelatory capstone to a wholly remarkable career. It is a delightfully incantatory work that, in the tradition of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, shows us how bizarre and unpredictable love can be.

Book excerpt: An English court in 1736 described rape as an accusation “easily to be made and hard to be proved, and harder to be defended by the party accused, though never so innocent. ”To prove the crime, the law required a woman to physically resist, to put up a “hue and cry,” as evidence of her unwillingness. Beginning in the 1970s, however, feminist and victim-advocacy groups began changing attitudes toward rape so the crime is now seen as violent in itself: the legal definition of rape now includes everything from the sadistic serial rapist to the eighteen-year-old who has consensual sex with a fourteen-year-old. This inclusiveness means there are now more rapists among us. And more of rape’s camp followers: the prison-makers, the community watchdogs, law-and-order politicians, and the real-crime/real-time entertainment industry. Vanessa Place examines the ambiguity of rape law by presenting cases where guilt lies, but lies uneasily, and leads into larger ethical questions of what defines guilt, what is justice, and what is considered just punishment. Assuming a society can and must be judged by the way it treats its most despicable members, The Guilt Project looks at the way the American legal system defines, prosecutes, and punishes sex offenders, how this Dateline NBC justice has transformed our conception of who is guilty and how they ought to be treated, and how this has come to undo our deeper humanity

Book excerpt: Prisons, an integral part of society, generally are not familiar to most people. Length of sentence and treatment by others in the prisons vary widely. The immediate “Man-in-charge” of each prison unit is the warden, who has some flexibility within TDCJ guidelines. Warden Dr. Keith Price gained a reputation for turning around some chaotic prison units. He knows from experience that at best, prisons are very difficult places for people, whether they are behind the bars or in front of them. “People that wind up in prison, inmates, generally are society’s rejects,” Price said. “They’ve been unable to do the things other people do to make life a success, whether it’s because of an abusive parent, addiction to some substance, stupidity, being unable to read or write, they’ve been failures and have chosen alternate means, that is crime.” Price also knows officers have a challenging life, “The correctional officer, has to deal with people so maladjusted that society says they can’t live amongst them anymore. It’s conflict day after day, hour after hour and it really takes a toll, from broken marriages to financial problems to substance abuse. It’s continual.” The Texas Prison System was named “one of the best” in the country by a leading penology expert. However, shortly after that, a Federal Judge took control of the entire Texas Department of Corrections for “unconstitutional treatment” of inmates. TDC denied and resisted many of the reforms the judge ordered. The result was chaos. Too few guards, rampant gangs, gang wars and overcrowding were the norm for several years. The court kept control 20 years and finally the prison system adapted to the new (and constitutional) ways of operating. At the same time Texas prison population doubled, and more than doubled, again. During that time, 19-year-old Rickie Smith began a 10-year sentence in TDC on a drug charge. He joined the gang wars, in the Aryan Brotherhood and then made his own personal war with prison officers. He could have been released in a few short years, but, in 3 separate trials juries added 3 ninety-nine-year sentences for him to serve. Trial transcripts have many references in testimonies to how dangerous Rickie Smith is--even calling him “the most violent inmate” in TDC. REAL PRISON / REAL FREEDOM is a biography of Rickie Smith and how his life intersects with the woes of the prison system and with Warden Keith Price. Naturally, he wanted out, knowing that realistically it will never happen. Officials told him he’ll never get out. Then came the impossible that shocked everyone, especially Rickie.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interrupted Life is a gripping collection of writings by and about imprisoned women in the United States, a country that jails a larger percentage of its population than any other nation in the world. This eye-opening work brings together scores of voices from both inside and outside the prison system including incarcerated and previously incarcerated women, their advocates and allies, abolitionists, academics, and other analysts. In vivid, often highly personal essays, poems, stories, reports, and manifestos, they offer an unprecedented view of the realities of women's experiences as they try to sustain relations with children and family on the outside, struggle for healthcare, fight to define and achieve basic rights, deal with irrational sentencing systems, remake life after prison; and more. Together, these powerful writings are an intense and visceral examination of life behind bars for women, and, taken together, they underscore the failures of imagination and policy that have too often underwritten our current prison system.

Book excerpt: Proverbs 29:18 Where there is no vision [no redemptive revelation of God], the people perish; but he who keeps the law [of God, which includes that of man]-blessed (happy, fortunate, and enviable) is he. Growing up in Brooklyn New York, I believe God ordained my life for me before the foundation of the world. When I look at my life, and at who I am, it is based on what God hid inside of me, and how powerful God's Word is too, and for me. Would I have chosen a life of addiction, if I was God for my life, a life of destruction and kais I don't think so; My mother believed that if I would go to church that something good would happen for me, she herself didn't even go, but she believed if I would go my life would be changed. She was right; this is how God was able to grow his word which He had hid inside of me before the foundation of the world. My understanding of this! is why I am able to write this book called Visionary Power, because it was a gift given to me by my heavenly Father to use as a road map from my pass through my present, and into my future. Enjoy as you read the first of many books I believe God has given me to write to encourage, and to help propel people into there destiny; for our lives are not a mistake, but predestined for greatness, I am just a witness of that light, I am not that light, there is a true light, that lights everyone that comes into the world; EVEN YOU; ENJOY.

Book excerpt: Seeing Through New Eyes offers an accessible introduction to the treatment of visual dysfunction, a significant but neglected problem associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and other developmental disabilities. Dr. Kaplan identifies common ASD symptoms such as hand-flapping, poor eye contact and tantrums as typical responses to the confusion caused by vision disorder. He also explains the effects of difficulties that people with autism experience with "ambient vision", including a lack of spatial awareness and trouble with coordination. Other chapters give guidance on how to identify the visual deficits of nonverbal children, select prism lenses that will alter the visual field, and create individually tailored programs of therapy in order to retrain the system. This book is essential reading for parents of children with ASDs, and professionals in the fields of autism, optometry and ophthalmology, psychology and education.
