Book Synopsis A History of Colombian Economic Thought by : Andrés Álvarez
Download or read book A History of Colombian Economic Thought written by Andrés Álvarez and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-08 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the quest for independence between 1810 and 1819, economic thought in Colombia has been shaped by policy debates and characterized by a pragmatic and eclectic approach. Economic thought in Colombia can only be revealed through the exploration of economists’ practices and the role of economic arguments within broader public debate. This history of Colombian economic thought provides a detailed account of major issues that have marked the constant feedback between economic ideas and economic practice in Colombia during the 19th and 20th centuries. This volume is thus a history of the interaction between ideas and policy. Those involved in these debates – politicians, public officials, journalists, and, latterly, professional economists – established direct contact with what can be identified as the centers of production of economic theory (both in Europe and the US) and entered regional and local networks in economics, but were not just importers of ideas or theories. The way in which they read, discussed, transformed and applied economic theories in Colombia makes for a rich environment for the production and implementation of economic policies that drew, diverged and transformed the way economics was understood and used as a source of knowledge for practical concerns. This is why the history of Colombian economic thought does not fit into traditional typologies of economic schools and why it must be understood as part of a political debate and within a political, social and cultural context that demanded specific solutions to urgent social demands. Through the study of what was taught, when and how, at the beginnings of the republican era, and why and how professional economists came to lead public debate and economic policy making in the 20th century, this book explores the foundations of this permanent interaction between theory and practice. This book will be of significant interest to readers of history of economic thought, economic history and the history of Colombian and Latin American economic, political and social life more broadly.

Book Synopsis The New Economics Of The Less Developed Countries by : Nake Kamrany
Download or read book The New Economics Of The Less Developed Countries written by Nake Kamrany and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a quarter-century of experimentation with economic development in the poorer countries, the disarray, and in some cases the calamitous results, are so obvious that a fresh look at and reexamination of traditional assumptions, methodologies, theories, and policies is needed. The contributors to this volume explore—with supporting theoretical frameworks and emipirical evidence—the new perceptions concerning the development of the poor countries, providing clear and sophisticated treatments of North-South bargaining, commodity power, indexation, the theory of power and the international distribution of rights and resources, and the effectiveness of international organizations as vehicles for conflict resolution. The authors discuss the position and prospects of the non-oil-producing, less developed countries, focusing on measurements of the quality of life in these countries, growth and income distribution policies, and the effectiveness of public expenditures to enhance social welfare.
Book Synopsis The Taxation of Income from Business and Capital in Colombia by : Charles E. McLure
Download or read book The Taxation of Income from Business and Capital in Colombia written by Charles E. McLure and published by Fiscal Reform in the Developin. This book was released on 1990 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the years Colombian tax officials have received the benefit of first-class advice of leading foreign scholars. In return, these scholars--and indeed everyone concerned with development policy--have gained a great deal both from the unusual willingness of Colombians to consider new ideas in detail and then, after full public discussion, drawing on the work of these experts to design a 'made-in-Colombia' solution. "[The book's] most important contribution, however, is undoubtedly with respect to consumption taxes. No one, anywhere, has thought through with such care just how the so-called 'simplified alternative tax' (essentially a direct personal consumption tax combined with a cash-flow corporate tax) might work in the real world. Since such taxes are increasingly being considered--if not adopted--all over the world, in developing and developed countries alike, for this reason alone this book should be high on the reading list of all those concerned with the design and implementation of efficient and equitable direct tax systems."--From the Foreword by Richard M. Bird

Book Synopsis The Decline of Latin American Economies by : Sebastian Edwards
Download or read book The Decline of Latin American Economies written by Sebastian Edwards and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America’s economic performance is mediocre at best, despite abundant natural resources and flourishing neighbors to the north. The perplexing question of how some of the wealthiest nations in the world in the nineteenth century are now the most crisis-prone has long puzzled economists and historians. The Decline of Latin American Economies examines the reality behind the struggling economies of Argentina, Chile, and Mexico. A distinguished panel of experts argues here that slow growth, rampant protectionism, and rising inflation plagued Latin America for years, where corrupt institutions and political unrest undermined the financial outlook of already besieged economies. Tracing Latin America’s growth and decline through two centuries, this volume illustrates how a once-prosperous continent now lags behind. Of interest to scholars and policymakers alike, it offers new insight into the relationship between political systems and economic development.

Book Synopsis Tax Reform in Developing Countries by : Wayne R. Thirsk
Download or read book Tax Reform in Developing Countries written by Wayne R. Thirsk and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1997 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tax Reform in Developing Countries carefully examines the experience of eight developing countries that have undergone -- and in some instances are still undergoing -- significant and comprehensive tax reform. The countries are Bolivia, Colombia, Indonesia, Jamaica, Korea, Mexico, Morocco, and Turkey. It draws on their experiences to find lessons learned and to see how they may be applied to other countries on the road to tax reform. Equal attention is given to the process of tax reform, how it is implemented, and the substance or results of reform efforts. Throughout, the focus is on the practical rather than the theoretical aspects of tax reform.
Book Synopsis Welfare Theory, Public Action, and Ethical Values by : Roger E. Backhouse
Download or read book Welfare Theory, Public Action, and Ethical Values written by Roger E. Backhouse and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative history of welfare economics challenges the view that welfare economics can be discussed without taking ethical values into account. Whatever their theoretical commitments, when economists have considered practical problems relating to public policy, they have adopted a wider range of ethical values, whether equality, justice, freedom, or democracy. Even canonical authors in the history of welfare economics are shown to have adopted ethical positions different from those with which they are commonly associated. Welfare Theory, Public Action, and Ethical Values explores the reasons and implications of this, drawing on concepts of welfarism and non-welfarism developed in modern welfare economics. The authors exemplify how economic theory, public affairs and political philosophy interact, challenging the status quo in order to push economists and historians to reconsider the nature and meaning of welfare economics.

Book Synopsis Property Tax Reform in Developing Countries by : Jay K. Rosengard
Download or read book Property Tax Reform in Developing Countries written by Jay K. Rosengard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Property Tax Reform in Developing Countries provides a conceptual framework for property tax reform with the intention of making the most compelling argument possible to persuade the reader as to its validity. The text claims that a model for property tax reform in developing countries is derived from a theoretical distillation of empirical experience. The primary objective of this study is to establish, through logic, theory and observation: what constitutes a good property tax system, for whom, and under what conditions; why such a system works; and how inferior systems can be upgraded to approximate well-functioning systems. Property Tax Reform in Developing Countries develops its examination in three stages. First, a conceptual framework is presented for the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of property tax reform in developing countries. Second, attempts to reform property taxation in four developing countries are examined in detail. Finally, the results of the reform efforts described in the four case studies are evaluated and guidelines for reform are offered. The study concludes with specific recommendations for reforming property tax systems in developing countries, based on the conceptual framework and synthesizing lessons of the case studies.
