Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people hope to have a good work life topped off by a reasonable retirement. Shocking as it may be, the latest data shows most people reach retirement only to find that they have little or no money to live on. It's even more shocking to see the drastic changes that causes in those peoples life styles. To get an idea, visit some nursing homes. Not those you have to pay for. Visit the ones that take care of the people who have little or no money. No one wants to end up like that, so why is this happening? Basically, we work and earn a paycheck for two-thirds of our adult lives. Then we retire and live the last third on the funds we built during our working years. In other words, how you live those final 20, 30, 40, or more years depends on how well you prepared your finances to support you. It's your choice. Some want to arrange their finances such that their life styles can remain essentially unchanged as they pass from working to retired. We refer to these as rich. If you want to be part of this group, this book is for you. One's financial life can be thought of as consisting of three phases. I call them Getting Started, Taking Control, and Preparing for and Living in Retirement. This book reflects those three phases and is focused on helping people develop and arrange their finances in each phase so that they are able to retire with the same standard of living they had before the paychecks stopped. Phase 1, Getting Started, refers to the period in one's life where he or she obtains the education and skills to pursue the work life that one has chosen. In general, it extends from the later grades in high school through the early working years up to the point where one begins to have funds to invest. This is the time period when one generally realizes that companies don't hire people, they hire skills. Some even realize that it is not just having the skills, but having done something notable with the skills that really make a difference in management's mind. Phase 2, Taking Control, covers the period from the time one begins to get serious about establishing a retirement fund until retirement begins to come over the horizon. This is also often the time when one begins to realize that one cannot work himself or herself rich. One must invest to generate sufficient funds to have an enjoyable retirement. Phase 3, Planning for and Living in Retirement, covers the time from when retirement starts coming over the horizon through the retirement years, Areas covered include Social Security, Medicare, withdrawing funds from your retirement plan, taxes and the illusion of wealth, and strategies to make your money last a lifetime. It also includes some planning techniques that might provide opportunities to reduce taxes as one is about to enter retirement. As you begin to take control of your financial future, the author encourages you to identify your target, the sum you will need at retirement to maintain your lifestyle, and to track your progress. The book provides means to do both. Websites with the latest data are identified and tables are provided to help you identify your target. Charts are provided and their use described to help you track your progress. If you have an interest in your financial future, and from the above you can see that you should, then this book can help you get started and guide you along the way. As the book says, to be Rich or Poor, It's Your Choice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heartfelt, deeply personal book that shines a bright light on the values and principles that Bill Gates Sr. has learned over a lifetime of “showing up”: lessons that he learned growing up during the Great Depression, and that he instilled in his children and continues to practice on the world stage as the co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Through the course of several dozen narratives arranged in roughly chronological fashion, Gates introduces the people and experiences that influenced his thinking and guided his moral compass. Among them: the scoutmaster who taught him about teamwork and self reliance; and his famous son, Trey, whose curiosity and passion for computers and software led him to ultimately co-found Microsoft. Through revealing stories of his daughters, Kristi and Libby; his late wife, Mary, and his current wife, Mimi; and his work with Nelson Mandela and Jimmy Carter, among others, he discusses the importance of hard work, getting along, honoring a confidence, speaking out, and much more. Showing Up for Life translates one man’s experiences over fourscore years of living into an inspiring road map for readers everywhere. As Bill Gates Sr. puts it: "I’m 83 years old. Representing the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and everyone who is a part of it has given me the opportunity to see more of the world and its rich possibilities than most people ever do. I never imagined that I’d be working this late in life, or enjoying it so much."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether we're buying a pair of jeans, ordering a cup of coffee, selecting a long-distance carrier, applying to college, choosing a doctor, or setting up a 401(k), everyday decisions—both big and small—have become increasingly complex due to the overwhelming abundance of choice with which we are presented. As Americans, we assume that more choice means better options and greater satisfaction. But beware of excessive choice: choice overload can make you question the decisions you make before you even make them, it can set you up for unrealistically high expectations, and it can make you blame yourself for any and all failures. In the long run, this can lead to decision-making paralysis, anxiety, and perpetual stress. And, in a culture that tells us that there is no excuse for falling short of perfection when your options are limitless, too much choice can lead to clinical depression. In The Paradox of Choice, Barry Schwartz explains at what point choice—the hallmark of individual freedom and self-determination that we so cherish—becomes detrimental to our psychological and emotional well-being. In accessible, engaging, and anecdotal prose, Schwartz shows how the dramatic explosion in choice—from the mundane to the profound challenges of balancing career, family, and individual needs—has paradoxically become a problem instead of a solution. Schwartz also shows how our obsession with choice encourages us to seek that which makes us feel worse. By synthesizing current research in the social sciences, Schwartz makes the counter intuitive case that eliminating choices can greatly reduce the stress, anxiety, and busyness of our lives. He offers eleven practical steps on how to limit choices to a manageable number, have the discipline to focus on those that are important and ignore the rest, and ultimately derive greater satisfaction from the choices you have to make.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Your Only Choice is to Become Rich!" This is a self help book. In this book I will examine the complexities of life as a felon or probationer. My observations in this book are also for the misinformed and misguided. This book is of relevance to those who feel like their situations are hopeless. For those that have had thoughts of giving up. Given that no one wants to hire convicted felons, How will they survive? Is a life in a criminal system the only way out? If so, life as an entrepreneur is inevitable. Yet, living legal vs. illegal is a dilemma that all U.S. citizens encounter each day. A die-hard decision to survive or not survive. Furthermore, psychological implications as a result of poverty and economic oppression are only a few obstacles that these individuals must face. Stereotypes and prejudices leave only one option to overcome. To be successful. To be wealthy. To be rich. Yet, figuring out a way to become rich after one has made a mistake is an even harder dilemma. Being able to still have faith in the American system and accepting the consequences of ones' actions is even more difficult. Yet, with GOD and the truth, one can only be patient as his/her day in the sun is just down the road. Happiness comes simple and less frequent now, but is still accessible. Yet, someone has to guide you now. Someone has to show you how to get on track and stay on track. Someone has to show you that you still are American. Someone has to show you that the “American Dream” still includes you. You will forever be a possible recipient of this great prize. It's just going to be a little harder now. You have to get Rich. By legal means. By your own means. Believing and knowing no matter your race, creed, or religion that success is a jungle and a couple of misfortunes away. Last, in this book I will simply challenge some of the problems present in today's society. Explain this system of democracy. I will then offer my insights. You are then ok to form an opinion based on this literature. My hope is that you come away with a sense of pride and understanding of what it takes to become successful. Success has long meant the unlimited accumulation of material possessions. Rich means a lot more than what meets the eye. What's in you?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the arena of the wealthy or poor, your choice. In this world, the selection is yours. The choices you make determine your future, and in this international economy, the wealthy are continually the winners. The rich are continually those who're able to get what they want. They may be those who are capable of staying ahead of the opposition. The rich are the ones who're able to make the selections that cause success. The terrible, alternatively, are those who are by no means capable of catching up. The terrible are the ones who are constantly at their back. They may be the ones who are never capable of achieving their goals. The selection is yours. The selections you're making determine your destiny. The selection is between the existence of the wealthy and the lifestyles of the terrible. The selection is between the lives of fulfillment and failure. The choice is between the existence of happiness and the life of misery. The choice is yours. Pick up the existence of the wealthy, and you'll be capable of achieving your desires. Choose the life of the terrible, and you may be able to acquire your dreams. Pick out the lifestyles of fulfillment, and you will be capable of living an existence of happiness. The choice is yours. Make the right preference, and you'll be able to achieve your dreams. Make the wrong choice, and you will be able to stay in an existence of distress. Welcome to the world of rich or poor, your choice. The choice is yours. The choice is between the life of the wealthy and the existence of the negative. The selection is between the life of fulfillment and the life of failure. The selection is between the lifestyles of happiness and the existence of distress. The choice is yours. Make the right preference, and you'll be capable of reaping your dreams. Make the wrong choice, and you'll be capable of staying in a life of misery. The choice is yours. Thank you for deciding on the life of the rich and for having proper luck on your adventure to fulfillment. In modern-day society, it looks as if the line between the wealthy and the poor is constantly blurring. With the ever-developing financial system and the ever-growing price of housing, it seems like it can be hard to distinguish between the two. Whilst there are certainly people who are born into wealthy families and may live without problems without having to paint for a living, there are also many who are negative and need to work hard for what they have. That's the proper preference for you? There are some things to remember when making this choice. Initially, it's critical to remember that money is not the only element that matters in life. If you need to be happy, you also need to additionally focus on enjoying life's other pleasures, like spending time with your friends, doing something you adore, or certainly having very good humor. Another thing to take into account is your long-term goals. Are you planning on staying within the same process for the rest of your existence? If not now, is it essential to you so you can help yourself financially? If you answered "none" to both of these questions, you may need to make more money.

Book excerpt: Every day we make choices. These choices impact our lives, our careers, our families, our health, our successes, and our failures. Often we make choices without considering the impact or consequences that may result. We make choices every day in the workplace and in our personal lives that mold and craft our future, and we are not even aware of it. Where we are today is a direct result of the choices we have made. Where we will be tomorrow is directly related to the choices we are going to make. Each of us has been dealt a hand of cards. The cards we have been dealt may have been outside our control. However, how we respond to these cards is 100 percent within our control. The best poker players don’t win because they always have the best cards; they win because they know how to play the cards they are dealt. They know when to fold, when to stay in the game, how to read the other players at the table, and when to bluff. They win because of choices they make with the cards they were dealt. It’s Your Choice will help bring clarity and perspective to the choices you are faced with each day in the workplace and in your personal life. It will bring reason and logic to things that you may not have considered before. It’s Your Choice is designed to challenge you to think differently, more clearly, and with a larger perspective of the choices you make each day. There will be things in It’s Your Choice you don’t want to hear. There will be things shared that will challenge you to think deeper than you have in the past. What you do with what you read in It’s Your Choice is indeed your choice.

This author has a different view. AA can't help you. No higher power is going to help you. The author of this book can't help you. Take a long hard look in a mirror. Although you look similar to the reflection staring back at you, what you see and how others see you are actually two different people. So who has the best view of that image in the mirror? That answer may be a key to the end results you are searching for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling work of undercover reportage from our sharpest and most original social critic, with a new foreword by Matthew Desmond, author of Evicted Millions of Americans work full time, year round, for poverty-level wages. In 1998, Barbara Ehrenreich decided to join them. She was inspired in part by the rhetoric surrounding welfare reform, which promised that a job—any job—can be the ticket to a better life. But how does anyone survive, let alone prosper, on $6 an hour? To find out, Ehrenreich left her home, took the cheapest lodgings she could find, and accepted whatever jobs she was offered. Moving from Florida to Maine to Minnesota, she worked as a waitress, a hotel maid, a cleaning woman, a nursing-home aide, and a Wal-Mart sales clerk. She lived in trailer parks and crumbling residential motels. Very quickly, she discovered that no job is truly "unskilled," that even the lowliest occupations require exhausting mental and muscular effort. She also learned that one job is not enough; you need at least two if you int to live indoors. Nickel and Dimed reveals low-rent America in all its tenacity, anxiety, and surprising generosity—a land of Big Boxes, fast food, and a thousand desperate stratagems for survival. Read it for the smoldering clarity of Ehrenreich's perspective and for a rare view of how "prosperity" looks from the bottom. And now, in a new foreword, Matthew Desmond, author of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, explains why, twenty years on in America, Nickel and Dimed is more relevant than ever.
