SILVIA FESTUCCIA è docente di Archeologia e Storia dell'Arte del Vicino Oriente Antico all'Università degli Studi Suor Orsola Benincasa di Napoli. È membro della Missione Archeologica Italiana ad Ebla (Siria) dal 1992 e della Missione Archeologica Italiana a Monastiraki (Creta) dal 2007. Autrice di studi riguardanti l'urbanistica e la metallurgia del Vicino Oriente, ha partecipato a convegni internazionali e pubblicato vari contributi attinenti a scavi archeologici diretti in Italia e all'Estero.

Tuttavia, la percezione che noi occidentali abbiamo nei riguardi dell'oriente, e in particolare nei confronti del patrimonio culturale orientale, è piuttosto ambigua. Infatti, se da un lato esso ci appare come un affascinante mistero da scoprire, dall'altro lato lo sentiamo talmente lontano che è difficile capire se tali distruzioni abbiano davvero toccato la nostra sensibilità. Secoli di commerci, esplorazioni e di varie imprese belliche hanno contribuito alla formazione di una precisa immagine dell'Oriente nella mentalità occidentale ed europea in particolare: quella dell'altro. L'Oriente è la contrapposizione ideale dell'Occidente. I primi studiosi ad occuparsi di archeologia orientale furono i grandi avventurieri degli anni '40 dell'Ottocento, scopritori delle città perdute del Medio Oriente narrate nella Bibbia, nelle quali andarono alla ricerca di tesori nascosti. Questi pseudo archeologi scavavano con mezzi inadeguati e metodologie di scavo che finivano per pregiudicare i siti stessi. Inoltre, il patrimonio archeologico del Vicino Oriente è stato molto penalizzato da molteplici fattori: politica in primo luogo e secondariamente storia e geografia, che hanno privilegiato la Mesopotamia rispetto all'Anatolia e alla Siria, per il suo evidente coinvolgimento biblico. Infatti, il testo sacro è stato il principale veicolo d'interesse per le antiche città del Vicino Oriente.Le metodologie archeologiche, da tecniche distruttive quali si erano dimostrate, col passare del tempo si sono addolcite nei confronti del patrimonio, facendo meritare all'archeologia la denominazione di "scienza", il che ha fatto approdare ad una concezione di tutela necessaria e costante del patrimonio culturale. Tale maturazione è stata conseguita in seguito ad una evoluzione del pensiero che finalmente ha inteso quanto il patrimonio culturale sia importante per la comunità stessa, dal momento che il nostro passato plasma il nostro presente e costituisce la nostra identità.
