Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rice Varieties and Their Yields in the United States, 1939-50 During the past 50 years more than varieties and selections of rice from various parts Of the world have been introduced into this country, largely by the United States Department of Agriculture. Most of the introductions were tested in cooperative experiments at the Rice Experiment Station, Crowley, La., and at the Biggs Rice Field Station, Biggs, Calif. A few of the varieties introduced and tested have proved to be well adapted. Cultivated rice varieties of the world are commonly grouped into upland and lowland types. Upland varieties are not irrigated and the land normally is not submerged during the growing season by the seasonal rainfall, which supplies the crop with moisture. Lowland varieties are normally grown on land submerged 2 to 8 inches deep by irrigation 01 rainfall during the greater part of the gi owing season. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Distribution of the Varieties and Classes of Wheat in the United States in 1939 This circular presents the estimated acreages computed from the fifth survey, for the crop year 1939. The estimated acreages by varieties and classes were computed using the seeded Wheat acreages by counties as estimated by the Agricultural Marketing Service. This is the first time that seeded -acreage figures have been available and used. The former surveys were based upon harvested acreages as reported by the regular and special agricultural census, except in 1934 when seeded wheat acreages as estimated by the Agricultural Market ing Service were used for the States of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Iri these States abandon ment was heavy because of drought. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.

Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. By 2050, human population is expected to reach 9.7 billion. The demand for increased food production needs to be met from ever reducing resources of land, water and other environmental constraints. Rice remains the staple food source for a majority of the global populations, but especially in Asia where ninety percent of rice is grown and consumed. Climate change continues to impose abiotic and biotic stresses that curtail rice quality and yields. Researchers have been challenged to provide innovative solutions to maintain, or even increase, rice production. Amongst them, the ‘green super rice’ breeding strategy has been successful for leading the development and release of multiple abiotic and biotic stress tolerant rice varieties. Recent advances in plant molecular biology and biotechnologies have led to the identification of stress responsive genes and signaling pathways, which open up new paradigms to augment rice productivity. Accordingly, transcription factors, protein kinases and enzymes for generating protective metabolites and proteins all contribute to an intricate network of events that guard and maintain cellular integrity. In addition, various quantitative trait loci associated with elevated stress tolerance have been cloned, resulting in the detection of novel genes for biotic and abiotic stress resistance. Mechanistic understanding of the genetic basis of traits, such as N and P use, is allowing rice researchers to engineer nutrient-efficient rice varieties, which would result in higher yields with lower inputs. Likewise, the research in micronutrients biosynthesis opens doors to genetic engineering of metabolic pathways to enhance micronutrients production. With third generation sequencing techniques on the horizon, exciting progress can be expected to vastly improve molecular markers for gene-trait associations forecast with increasing accuracy. This book emphasizes on the areas of rice science that attempt to overcome the foremost limitations in rice production. Our intention is to highlight research advances in the fields of physiology, molecular breeding and genetics, with a special focus on increasing productivity, improving biotic and abiotic stress tolerance and nutritional quality of rice.
