Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhapsody in Blue has been restored to Gershwin's original manuscript by the talented Alicia Zizzo. This special edition includes an addendum to the two piano, four hands edition and the fully restored piano manuscript. When preparing the Rhapsody in Blue for publication, editors at Sam Harms Music Co. applied their own 19th century compositional conservatory training to the piece. With good intentions and due respect to Gershwin, they discreetly altered chords, phrases, dynamics, and accents, deleting whole passages to create a more concise work. Oddly, with the exception of four bars, all the deletions were from the piano solo sections, leaving the orchestration mostly undisturbed. Over 50 measures were deleted from the manuscript for the two-piano, four-hands publication, and the piece was shortened by several minutes. Approximately 80 measures were deleted from the original manuscript for the piano solo version and the editors used the second piano/orchestral reduction as a basis for it, further distancing the piano solo edition from Gershwin's original intent. After 70 years, the majesty of the complete Rhapsody in Blue as originally conceived and performed is finally available to future generations in this special annotated edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Arranging Gershwin, author Ryan Baagale approaches George Gershwin's iconic piece Rhapsody in Blue not as a composition but as an arrangement -- a status it has in many ways held since its inception in 1924, yet one unconsidered until now. Shifting emphasis away from the notion of the Rhapsody as a static work by a single composer, Baagale posits a broad vision of the piece that acknowledges the efforts of a variety of collaborators who shaped the Rhapsody as we know it today. Arranging Gershwin sheds new light on familiar musicians such as Leonard Bernstein and Duke Ellington, introduces lesser-known figures such as Ferde Grof and Larry Adler, and remaps the terrain of this emblematic piece of American music. At the same time, it expands on existing approaches to the study of arrangements -- an emerging and insightful realm of American music studies -- as well as challenges existing and entrenched definitions of composer and composition. Based on a host of newly discovered manuscripts, the book significantly alters existing historical and cultural conceptions of the Rhapsody. With additional forays into visual media, including the commercial advertising of United Airlines and Woody Allen's Manhattan, it moreover exemplifies how arrangements have contributed not only to the iconicity of Gershwin and Rhapsody in Blue, but also to music-making in America -- its people, their pursuits, and their processes.

Book excerpt: He discusses the well-known Rhapsody in Blue, Concerto in F, An American in Paris, and Porgy and Bess, as well as such popular songs as "Swanee," "'S Wonderful," "I Got Rhythm," "Love Walked In," and "Love Is Here to Stay." But he also examines relatively neglected works that are no less deserving, such as Second Rhapsody, Cuban Overture, and Pardon My English, the last of which, says Gilbert, was a failure on Broadway but was one of George and Ira Gershwin's finest collaborations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: in 1993 an historian wrote: ..". The lynching was especially atrocious: Two young black men were seized, dragged into the woods, and there chained to trees and tortured to death with blowtorches while a howling crowd of whites cursed and taunted them. Photographs were made of the dead bodies...." (K.S. Davis) This historical novel - ground-breaking in its emotional and graphic intensity - portrays the impact of that atrocity (1937) on two empathetic boys who didn't taunt, but secretly snapped pictures of the living, screaming victims (ironically, one given FDR's surname) - and desperately tried to stop it! Two against 500 (some came by school bus). After failing, they fled in despair - but with their Brownie Eagle Eye. Now on a compelling mission - because they'd been 'Ou t T h e r e .' Shattered, then galvanized, by the failures and heart-breaks of Book I, 'Einstein' Brian and 'Maestro' Marcus become avenging angels in Book II, sworn to strike 'Preacher-Creature Cecil' and his 'henchmen from hell' with the swords of retribution, self-defense, and 'un-Southern' justice. Kids no more, they begin to act like God: 'Somebody has to...!' With images of brutality preserved in camera, conscience, and nightmares, they write to Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt, and accept their invitation to dinner at the White House. Re-committed to the most profound 'what-if' of the Twentieth Century, the boys mutually pledge themselves to a daunting 'rendezvous with destiny.' And a Time Capsule ticket to 5,000 years into the future from Albert Einstein.......
