This creates real complications in designing power amplifiers (PA) that simultaneously meet the efficiency and linearity specifications of the modern wireless communication systems. Consequently, digital pre distortion (DPD) is often used to compensate for the nonlinearity of the PA when operated at high efficiency. However, the increasing growth of the data rates and bandwidth requirements of the transmitter’s architectures are setting new burdens on the use of some of its hardware components, such as the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) of the feedback path that is used to capture the PA’s output signal needed to derive the predistortion function. This thesis explores a technique suitable for extending the correction bandwidth of DPD systems for a given hardware specification. This approach is based on DPD model extraction from narrow-band measurements using under-sampling ADCs. The DPD is implemented using a two-box architecture which consists of the cascade of dynamic nonlinearity function followed by a static nonlinearity. The proposed method is validated in the presence of a 20-MHz long term evolution-advanced (LTE-A), which requires an ADC with a sampling rate of 100-Msps to capture the output of the PA due to the spectral regrowth behavior of the nonlinear amplifier. The output signal in this work is captured using an ADC with several under-sampling speeds that are reduced up to 75% of the full-rate requirements (i.e. 50-Msps, 40-Msps, 30-Msps, 25-Msps). Furthermore, the proposed approach also aims to reduce the software computational complexity of the typical DPD systems that involve high resolution delay alignment to be able to successfully extract the DPD coefficients. This is done by extracting the dynamic nonlinearity function in the two-box model using various delay mis-alignment conditions, that vary from -1 to +1 samples in steps of 0.1. Successful PA linearizations were achieved using the under-sampled signals from the ADC and dynamic nonlinearity predistorters that are extracted under delay mis-alignment conditions."--Abstract.

The waveforms currently being used, or envisioned for the future, coupled with the need for higher efficiency radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PA), are driving transmitters to include predistortion and to adopt advanced architectures. PA behavioral models are required for system simulations of these advanced architectures and digital predistortion (DPD) algorithms, to quickly evaluate the component impact on system performance. One advanced technology of particular interest in this work is envelope tracking (ET) where the supply voltage is modulated at the envelope rate, keeping the RF signal operating rail to rail, which changes the performance of the RFPA. This dissertation focuses on accurate estimation of nonlinear behavioral models for PAs: both memoryless and with memory effects. Memory effects are the byproduct of physics-based or circuit-based changes within the amplifier with responses on a baseband time scale (rather than at the carrier frequency). When these memory effects become pronounced, they create a shift in the memoryless model. In order to accurately predict system performance, especially when the system includes a DPD block, it is critical to generate behavioral models for RFPAs which capture the shifts in the memoryless model. The thesis presents a new model, termed the Blackbox augmented behavioral characteristics (ABC) model, which includes the response of the internal states of the circuit. Its extraction is demonstrated from measured data using pulsed or modulated waveforms. The generation of modulated waveforms for instrumentation systems has length restrictions and input sequences are used repetitively, so they should be circular. Techniques that synthesize circular waveforms suitable for measurement systems, directly from long modulated waveforms are presented. An "expected gain" model is developed in this work, and a methodology for extracting waveform specific, expected gain models efficiently from measurements of modulated signals (such as WCDMA) is presented. These expected gain models are then applied to DPD. A technique that leverages the circular stationary measurements, memory mitigation, is presented. The DPD algorithm identifies and compensates systematic distortions in the waveform, generating input signals that achieve optimal outputs, compensating for all deterministic memory of the system and quantifying the measurement limits of the system. A number of systematic measurement impairments are encountered in these experiments. Techniques that compensate for these impairments, including phase drift and time alignment are presented. The thesis also describes behavioral modeling include demonstrating DPD using new techniques that stem from truncating and thresholding the Volterra series. When compared with two other published truncated Volterra series forms on standard Class AB PAs, all three memory models perform equally well. When applied to modeling ETPAs, however, the new thresholded Volterra series model is more efficient, using less than a third of the coefficients to describe the ETPA nonlinear memory effects. In this work, techniques are applied experimentally to RFPAs, from handset PAs to base station PAs, built with a wide variety of materials: HBTs on GaAs, LDMOS devices on Si, and HFET devices on GaN, and GaN HFET devices on Si.

Applications over such bands increasingly require more versatile, data extensive wireless communications that leads to the necessity of high bandwidth efficient interfaces, operating over wideband frequency ranges. Whether for a base station or mobile device, the regulations and adequate transmission of such schemes place stringent requirements on the design of transmitter front-ends. Increasingly strenuous and challenging hardware design criteria are to be met, especially so in the design of power amplifiers (PA), the bottle neck of the transmitter's design tradeoff between linearity and power efficiency. The power amplifier exhibits a nonideal behavior, characterized by both nonlinearity and memory effects, heavily affecting that tradeoff, and therefore requiring an effective linearization technique, namely Digital Predistortion (DPD). The effectiveness of the DPD is highly dependent on the modeling scheme used to compensate for the PA's nonideal behavior. In fact, its viability is determined by the scheme's accuracy and implementation complexity. Generic behavioral models for nonlinear systems with memory have been used, considering the PA as a black box, and requiring RF designers to perform extensive testing to determine the minimal complexity structure that achieves satisfactory results. This thesis first proposes a direct systematic approach based on the parallel Hammerstein structure to determine the exact number of coefficients needed in a DPD. Then a physical explanation of memory effects is detailed, which leads to a close-form expression for the characteristic behavior of the PA entirely based on circuit properties. The physical expression is implemented and tested as a modeling scheme. Moreover, a link between this formulation and the proven behavioral models is explored, namely the Volterra series and Memory Polynomial. The formulation shows the correlation between parameters of generic behavioral modeling schemes when applied to RF PAs and demonstrates redundancy based on the physical existence or absence of modeling terms, detailed for the proven Memory polynomial modeling and linearization scheme.
