Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reward of Patient Love: And Flowers From the Garden of Thought I am a grandson of Gen. Wm, Putnam who, as a Whig, with other leaders made demand on the Canadian and British parliaments for s responsible form of government. The so-called demand and the clash that followed are known as the Canadian Rebellion of '37. The Whig obtained that for which they took up arms, but certain leaders were marked. My grandfather was one of these and a price was set on his head. The result of the conflict was, that the Whigs were victors in defeat. They got what they demand, as the price of peace, but the Tories remained in power. During the unsettled period, while amnesties were being arranged and settled, my grandfather remained in Detroit, Mich. He was, however, induced by a Tory, who had professed friendship, to believe that he might safely return to his family and property. He crossed into Canada at Detroit but had not gone far when he found himself surrounded by a large party, led by the Tory who persuaded him to cross. They captured only his body. He was buried where he fell, and near him were buried, his betrayer and six more of those who tried to take him. He left a family of seven children with their mother. Book Synopsis Flower Fables by : Louisa May Alcott
Download or read book Flower Fables written by Louisa May Alcott and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are no longer children, — but it is not long since we were; and remembering that golden time, when the sun was brighter, the flowers twice as many, the rivers larger, and everything fairer, than it ever has been since, we welcome this book of fables for children. The writer of them was herself a girl of sixteen when they were written, — many, many years ago, — and of course their chief charm is for younger people than we venerable undergraduates. And the children (whose judgment is best) declare loudly for the book, and listen pleased for hours to the adventures of Lily-Bell and Thistledown and the kind little Ripple. But others also can find a pleasure in the love and knowledge of Nature which the book shows, and in its graceful fancies and sweet lessons of charity and patience. The men and women who write stories for children do a greater work for the world than we are wont to think of. Horace praised poets because they formed the "tender mouth" of children, and turned them from the vile to the beautiful. Miss Alcott does not need to "Claim the shelter from her sire of an immortal name," for she has earned praises for herself.

Every flower in your herbaceous border has a story, and in this book Advolly Richmond takes you on a tour of the most intriguing, surprising and enriching ones. Tales of exploration, everlasting love and bravery bring these beautiful flowers to life. Advolly has dug down to uncover the royalty, scholars, pioneers and a smuggler or two that have all played a part in discovering and cultivating some of our favourite species. From the lavish and exotic bougainvillea, found by an 18th century female botanist in disguise to the humble but majestic snowdrop casting a spell and causing a frenzy. These plants have played pivotal roles in our societies, from boom to bust economies, promises of riches and making fashion statements. These unassuming blooms hold treasure troves of stories. With specially commissioned artworks from award-winning botanical illustrator Sarah Jane Humphrey, which sumptuously bring each flower to life – this is a beautiful compendium for every garden lover.

Book Synopsis Embodiments of Mind by : Warren S. McCulloch
Download or read book Embodiments of Mind written by Warren S. McCulloch and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-10-29 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writings by a thinker—a psychiatrist, a philosopher, a cybernetician, and a poet—whose ideas about mind and brain were far ahead of his time. Warren S. McCulloch was an original thinker, in many respects far ahead of his time. McCulloch, who was a psychiatrist, a philosopher, a teacher, a mathematician, and a poet, termed his work “experimental epistemology.” He said, “There is one answer, only one, toward which I've groped for thirty years: to find out how brains work.” Embodiments of Mind, first published more than fifty years ago, teems with intriguing concepts about the mind/brain that are highly relevant to recent developments in neuroscience and neural networks. It includes two classic papers coauthored with Walter Pitts, one of which applies Boolean algebra to neurons considered as gates, and the other of which shows the kind of nervous circuitry that could be used in perceiving universals. These first models are part of the basis of artificial intelligence. Chapters range from “What Is a Number, that a Man May Know It, and a Man, that He May Know a Number,” and “Why the Mind Is in the Head,” to “What the Frog's Eye Tells the Frog's Brain” (with Jerome Lettvin, Humberto Maturana, and Walter Pitts), “Machines that Think and Want,” and “A Logical Calculus of the Ideas Immanent in Nervous Activity” (with Walter Pitts). Embodiments of Mind concludes with a selection of McCulloch's poems and sonnets. This reissued edition offers a new foreword and a biographical essay by McCulloch's one-time research assistant, the neuroscientist and computer scientist Michael Arbib.
