Book excerpt: African-American writer Richard Wright (1908-1960) was celebrated during the early 1940s for his searing autobiography (Black Boy) and fiction (Native Son). By 1947 he felt so unwelcome in his homeland that he exiled himself and his family in Paris. But his writings changed American culture forever, and today they are mainstays of literature and composition classes. He and his works are also the subjects of numerous critical essays and commentaries by contemporary writers. This volume presents a comprehensive annotated bibliography of those essays, books, and articles from 1983 through 2003. Arranged alphabetically by author within years are some 8,320 entries ranging from unpublished dissertations to book-length studies of African American literature and literary criticism. Also included as an appendix are addenda to the author's earlier bibliography covering the years from 1934 through 1982. This is the exhaustive reference for serious students of Richard Wright and his critics.
Book Synopsis The Empire Abroad and the Empire at Home by : John Cullen Gruesser
Download or read book The Empire Abroad and the Empire at Home written by John Cullen Gruesser and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Empire Abroad and the Empire at Home, John Cullen Gruesser establishes that African American writers at the turn of the twentieth century responded extensively and idiosyncratically to overseas expansion and its implications for domestic race relations. He contends that the work of these writers significantly informs not only African American literary studies but also U.S. political history. Focusing on authors who explicitly connect the empire abroad and the empire at home (James Weldon Johnson, Sutton Griggs, Pauline E. Hopkins, W.E.B. Du Bois, and others), Gruesser examines U.S. black participation in, support for, and resistance to expansion. Race consistently trumped empire for African American writers, who adopted positions based on the effects they believed expansion would have on blacks at home. Given the complexity of the debates over empire and rapidity with which events in the Caribbean and the Pacific changed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it should come as no surprise that these authors often did not maintain fixed positions on imperialism. Their stances depended on several factors, including the foreign location, the presence or absence of African American soldiers within a particular text, the stage of the author's career, and a given text's relationship to specific generic and literary traditions. No matter what their disposition was toward imperialism, the fact of U.S. expansion allowed and in many cases compelled black writers to grapple with empire. They often used texts about expansion to address the situation facing blacks at home during a period in which their citizenship rights, and their very existence, were increasingly in jeopardy.

Book Synopsis The Embodiment and Transmission of Ghanaian Kete Royal Dance by : Emmanuel Cudjoe
Download or read book The Embodiment and Transmission of Ghanaian Kete Royal Dance written by Emmanuel Cudjoe and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2024-11-12 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kete dance form, once exclusive to royal courts, carries intricate movements, symbolic gestures, and rhythms that mirror Ghanaian history and values. It embodies storytelling, often depicting tales of bravery, unity, or significant historical events. These dances were traditionally reserved for specific occasions within the royal setting, symbolizing prestige, honor, and tradition. With the passage of time, the transmission of Kete royal dance has transcended its original palace context, finding its way into academic domains. Universities and cultural institutions now extend the legacies of this dance form and even act as custodians of this art form, where scholars, dancers, and enthusiasts collaborate to study, preserve, and teach Kete dance. Through meticulous documentation, research, and practice, the academy endeavors to honor the Kete dance while making it accessible to a broader audience. This transmission from palace to academy serves as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of cultural traditions. It ensures the continuity of Ghanaian heritage and allows future generations, both within and beyond Ghana, to appreciate and learn from this profound dance form from an Afrocentric perspective.

Book excerpt: The first people of African descent to live in what is now South Carolina, enslaved people living in the sixteenth century Spanish settlements of San Miguel de Gualdape and Santa Elena, arrived even before the first permanent English settlement was established in 1670. For more than 350 years South Carolina's African American population has had a significant influence on the state's cultural, economic, and political development. 101 African Americans Who Shaped South Carolina depicts the long presence and profound influence people of African descent have had on the Palmetto State. Drawing upon the landmark text The South Carolina Encyclopedia, edited by Walter Edgar, the combined entries offer a concise and approachable history of the state and the African Americans who have shaped it. A foreword is provided by Walter Edgar, Neuffer Professor of Southern Studies Emeritus and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at the University of South Carolina.

Book Synopsis Transatlantic Crossings Between Paris and New York by : Iris Schmeisser
Download or read book Transatlantic Crossings Between Paris and New York written by Iris Schmeisser and published by Universitatsverlag Winter. This book was released on 2006 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How was the question of black cultural difference and identity negotiated among and between black cultural and political organizations in Paris and Harlem? How were concepts of black cultural difference - the idea of what distiguished black expressive culture and what constituted the originality of a black aesthetic - absorbed and articulated by the white artistic avantgarde and the primitivist modernist styles and themes they created? How was knowledge about African culture and 'African otherness' visually represented in the discourse of French colonial ethnography and colonial art? This study addresses the dynamics of transatlantic cultural exchange, concretely the international transfer and mediation of images and ideas about black culture in two artistic metropolises - New York and Paris - in the interwar years. These transatlantic crossings and the confluences are analyzed within a postcolonial framework, they are considered as responses to and as consequences of two related and hence intersecting formations of power: racism and colonialism and their political, social, epistemological and finally, cultural dimensions in the United States and France. Proceeding from the historical significance of race, this study links up the discourses of primitivist modernism, jazz, Africanist ethnography and art, the Harlem Renaissance and Negritude, a complex and ambivalent connection neglected until recently in contemporary scholarship.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Harlem Renaissance is the best known and most widely studied cultural movement in African American history. Now, in Harlem Renaissance Lives, esteemed scholars Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham have selected 300 key biographical entries culled from the eight-volume African American National Biography, providing an authoritative who's who of this seminal period. Here readers will find engagingly written and authoritative articles on notable African Americans who made significant contributions to literature, drama, music, visual art, or dance, including such central figures as poet Langston Hughes, novelist Zora Neale Hurston, aviator Bessie Coleman, blues singer Ma Rainey, artist Romare Bearden, dancer Josephine Baker, jazzman Louis Armstrong, and the intellectual giant W. E. B. Du Bois. Also included are biographies of people like the Scottsboro Boys, who were not active within the movement but who nonetheless profoundly affected the artistic and political statements that came from Harlem Renaissance figures. The volume will also feature a preface by the editors, an introductory essay by historian Cary D. Wintz, and 75 illustrations.
