Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated and well documented book gives a full picture of the economic development of the Polish Republic during the seventeen years which elapsed since the independence of Poland was proclaimed by Marshal Pilsudski on October 11th, 1918. The author, in his capacity of President of the greatest and most important of Polish banks, proceeds from a description of the general conditions of the state of the country at the close of the great war, from which it suffered almost a complete destruction of economic resources, through an account of the work of reconstruction so brilliantly accomplished by the united efforts of the Polish nation, to a statement of the position as it is today. The author discusses concisely but adequately the national finances, banking, production, distribution, foreign and overseas trade, communications and transport and closes with an extremely interesting chapter on the measures which Poland undertook in order to overcome the crisis which overwhelmed world economy in 1930. Numerous diagrams and full index enhance the great usefulness of this work which should be indispensible to the banker, maunfacturer, and trader, contemplating business with Poland, and to all students of economics and international affairs.

Book Synopsis World Development Report 2009 by : World Bank
Download or read book World Development Report 2009 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-11-04 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising densities of human settlements, migration and transport to reduce distances to market, and specialization and trade facilitated by fewer international divisions are central to economic development. The transformations along these three dimensions density, distance, and division are most noticeable in North America, Western Europe, and Japan, but countries in Asia and Eastern Europe are changing in ways similar in scope and speed. 'World Development Report 2009: Reshaping Economic Geography' concludes that these spatial transformations are essential, and should be encouraged. The conclusion is not without controversy. Slum-dwellers now number a billion, but the rush to cities continues. Globalization is believed to benefit many, but not the billion people living in lagging areas of developing nations. High poverty and mortality persist among the world's 'bottom billion', while others grow wealthier and live longer lives. Concern for these three billion often comes with the prescription that growth must be made spatially balanced. The WDR has a different message: economic growth is seldom balanced, and efforts to spread it out prematurely will jeopardize progress. The Report: documents how production becomes more concentrated spatially as economies grow. proposes economic integration as the principle for promoting successful spatial transformations. revisits the debates on urbanization, territorial development, and regional integration and shows how today's developers can reshape economic geography.
Book Synopsis Communism and Development (Routledge Revivals) by : Robert Bideleux
Download or read book Communism and Development (Routledge Revivals) written by Robert Bideleux and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985, this book provides a comprehensive reappraisal of the diverse Communist development strategies that shaped the twentieth century. Robert Bideleux emphasises the appalling human and economic costs of the most widely adopted ‘Stalinist’ strategies of forced industrialisation and rural collectivisation. He also reconsiders the powerful arguments in favour of the most feasible and cost-effective alternatives to Stalinism, including ‘village communisms’ and ‘market socialisms’. A highly readable and challenging study, this reissue will be of particular value to students with research interests in Development Studies, East European History and Politics.
Book Synopsis World Development Report 2020 by : World Bank
Download or read book World Development Report 2020 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global value chains (GVCs) powered the surge of international trade after 1990 and now account for almost half of all trade. This shift enabled an unprecedented economic convergence: poor countries grew rapidly and began to catch up with richer countries. Since the 2008 global financial crisis, however, the growth of trade has been sluggish and the expansion of GVCs has stalled. Meanwhile, serious threats have emerged to the model of trade-led growth. New technologies could draw production closer to the consumer and reduce the demand for labor. And trade conflicts among large countries could lead to a retrenchment or a segmentation of GVCs. World Development Report 2020: Trading for Development in the Age of Global Value Chains examines whether there is still a path to development through GVCs and trade. It concludes that technological change is, at this stage, more a boon than a curse. GVCs can continue to boost growth, create better jobs, and reduce poverty provided that developing countries implement deeper reforms to promote GVC participation; industrial countries pursue open, predictable policies; and all countries revive multilateral cooperation.

Book Synopsis The History of Poland Since 1863 by : Roy Francis Leslie
Download or read book The History of Poland Since 1863 written by Roy Francis Leslie and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983-05-19 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an account of the evolution of Poland from conditions of subjection to its reconstruction in 1918, development in the years between the two World Wars, and reorganisation after 1945. It begins at a time when Poland was still suffering from the legacy of the eighteenth-century Partitions and burdened with problems of sizeable ethnic minorities, inadequate agrarian reforms and sluggish industrial development sustained by foreign capital. It traces the history through to independence and then to the transformation of the country in the last thirty years. Although many of the problems of the past have now disappeared, industrialisation, the structure of peasant agriculture, and political association with the Soviet Union present the Polish People's Republic with difficulties that have yet to be resolved. Substantial achievements in an ethnically homogeneous state must be set against substantial discontents. This history provides the English-speaking reader with a scholarly synthesis based mainly on literature in Polish and other East European languages. It will be essential reading for historians of Eastern Europe and for those interested in modern Polish society.

Book Synopsis The Land Problem in the Developed Economy (Routledge Revivals) by : Andrew H. Dawson
Download or read book The Land Problem in the Developed Economy (Routledge Revivals) written by Andrew H. Dawson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land is an important finite commodity in the modern world. In the past wars have been fought over it and land shortage has been the cause of many famines. In modern times debates rage over just how land should be controlled by government and over whether land should be publicly or privately owned. This book, which was first published in 1984, surveys the major problems and debates connected with land use in the modern developed world. The opening chapters examine the main components of the problem and describe the development of the debate about land from Malthus onwards. The book then analyses land policy in a number of different countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, and Eastern Europe. This book is ideal for students of geography and economics.
