This methodology is based on measuring the local cooling curve in a laboratory-scale probe using thermocouples. Several methods have been proposed to analyze cooling curves. Among them, the temperature gradient method (TGM) developed by Professor Lišcic uses cooling curves measured at the surface and 1.5 mm below the surface of a cylindrical probe (the Lišcic-Nanmac probe) to calculate the surface heat flux during quenching. In this work, we measured the thermal response at a location near the surface of cylindrical probes, fabricated with AISI 304 stainless steel, with two different geometries (conical- and hemispherical-end) during quenching from 850°C with water at 60°C, flowing parallel to the probe's longitudinal axis. Together with the probe geometry, the experimental matrix included two values of water velocity (0.2 and 0.6 m/s). The data was used to estimate the surface heat flux and thermal response at the probe surface by solving a one-dimensional inverse heat conduction problem (IHCP) without phase change. The TGM was then applied to re-estimate the surface heat flux using the cooling curves at the subsurface (measured) and at the surface (estimated by solving the IHCP). The surface thermal gradient computed solving the IHCP is higher and, therefore, the surface heat flux estimated solving the IHCP is also higher than the value calculated with the TGM. The hemispherical-end probe delays the rupture of the vapor film, producing low values of the surface temperature at the time of maximum heat extraction; this results in extremely high values of the heat-transfer coefficient, which precludes the use of this geometry in conjunction with the TGM. The thermal profiles are parabolic, which restricts the maximum depth at which a subsurface thermocouple may be placed to use the TGM confidently.

The treatise is devoted to the reconstruction of our 'instinctive beliefs' in classical mechanics and to present them 'as much isolated and as free from irrelevant additions as possible'. The same motivation has driven many authors since the publication of Newton's Principia. IMPORTANCE. Classical mechanics will remain the basic reference and tool for mechanics on terrestrial and planetary scale as well as the proto-theory of relativistic and quantum mechanics. But it can only serve its purpose if it is not considered as obsolete, but if its foundations and implications are understood and made 'absolutely' clear. METHOD. Based on the 'instinctive belief' that the foundations of classical mechanics cannot be found and reconstructed within mechanics itself but only 'outside', classical mechanics is 'understood' by embedding it into an adequate theory of knowledge and adequate proto- and meta-theories in terms of the 'language of dynamics'. Evidence is produced that available philosophical expositions are not adequate for the purpose at hand. Mechanics is treated as part of physics, not of mathematics. Not sophisticated mathematical artifacts, necessary for solving specific problems, but the intellectually satisfactory foundation of mechanics in general is subject and purpose of the exercise. The goal is reached using axiomatic systems as models. SCOPE. Following an account of the unsatisfactory state of affairs the treatise covers the epistemological foundations, abstract proto-mechanics, i. e. the theories of time and space, meta-mechanics, i. e. the theories of state space models and of quantities proper, and, as an instance of the latter, abstract elementary mechanics, the theory of translational motions of 'small' solid bodies in three-dimensional Euclidean space, including classical general relativity. The eruption was dramatic both in the spatial extent of impacts and the range of volcanic disturbance types and intensities. Complex geophysical forces created unparalleled opportunities to study initial ecological responses and long-term succession processes that occur in response to a major contemporary eruption across a great diversity of ecosystems—lowland to alpine forests, meadows, lakes, streams, and rivers. These factors make Mount St. Helens an extremely rich environment for learning about the ecology of volcanic areas and, more generally, about ecosystem response to major disturbance of many types, including land management. Lessons about ecological recovery at Mount St. Helens are shaping thought about succession, disturbance ecology, ecosystem management, and landscape ecology. In the first five years after the eruption several syntheses documented the numerous, intensive studies of ecological recovery. The 2005 volume “Ecological Responses to the 1980 Eruption of Mount St. Helens” (Springer Publishing) was the first ecological synthesis since 1987 of the scores of ecological studies underway in the area. More than half of the world’s published studies on plant and animal responses to volcanic eruptions have taken place at Mount St. Helens. The 25-year synthesis, which generally included investigations (i.e., data) from 1980-2000, made it possible to more thoroughly analyze initial stages of ecological responses and to test the validity of early interpretations and the duration of early phenomena. And 35 years after the eruption, it is time for many of the scientists working in the first three-decade, post-eruption period to pass the science baton to the next generation of scientists to work at Mount St. Helens, and a synt hesis a t this time of transfer of responsibility to a younger cohort of scientists will be an enormous asset to the continuation of work at the volcano.
