Book excerpt: In the interest of speed and economy the notation of the orig inal text has been retained so that the cross product of two vectors A and B is denoted by [AB], the dot product by (AB), the Laplacian operator by ~. etc. It might also be worth pointing out that the temperature is frequently expressed in energy units in the Soviet literature so that the Boltzmann constant will be missing in various familiar expressions. In matters of terminology, whenever pos sible several forms are used when a term is first introduced, e. g. , magnetoacoustic and magnetosonic waves, "probkotron" and mirror machine, etc. It is hoped in this way to help the reader to relate the terms used here with those in existing translations and with the conventional nomenclature. In general the system of literature citation used in the bibliographies follows that of the American Institute of Physics "Soviet Physics" series. Except for the cor rection of some obvious misprints the text is that of the original. We wish to express our gratitude to Academician Leontovich for kindly providing the latest corrections and additions to the Russian text. v CONTENTS Steady-State Plasma Flow in a Magnetic Field A. I. Download or read book Reviews of Plasma Physics written by Vitaly D. Shafranov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviews of Plasma Physics Volume 22, contains two reviews. The first Cooperative Effects in Plasmas by the late B.B. Kadomtsev is based on the second edition of the author's book in Russian which originated from his written lectures for students of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. Kadomtsev intended to publish the book in English and even initiated the translation himself. The book represents a review of the typical plasma cooperative phenomena that determine the behavior of laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. It is characterized by lively language. The first three sections of the review deal with linear and nonlinear phenomena in fluids without a magnetic field. An additional subsection 'Solitons' has been added to the third section. The next two sections address regular nonlinear phenomena in a plasma in a magnetic field. The second review by S.V. Bulanov et al is connected with the contents of the first. The physics of the laser-plasma interaction including such nonlinear processes as wave breaking, the acceleration of charged particles, electromagnetic wave self-focusing, the relativistic soliton and vortex generation, are considered analytically and illustrated using computer simulations.

Book excerpt: 'The review articles in this series are invariably of a high standard, and those contained in the most recent volumes to appear are no exception....an excellent fund of detailed and reasonably up-to-date information.' -Journal of Plasma Physics, from a review of a previous volume Volume 19 offers plasma physicists detailed studies on paraxial WKB solution of a scalar wave equation, multiple-mirror plasma confinement, and plasma rotation in tokamaks.
Book Synopsis Theory Of Toroidally Confined Plasmas, The (Third Edition) by : Roscoe B White
Download or read book Theory Of Toroidally Confined Plasmas, The (Third Edition) written by Roscoe B White and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2013-11-18 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate level textbook develops the theory of magnetically confined plasma, with the aim of bringing the reader to the level of current research in the field of thermonuclear fusion. It begins with the basic concepts of magnetic field description, plasma equilibria and stability, and goes on to derive the equations for guiding center particle motion in an equilibrium field. Topics include linear and nonlinear ideal and resistive modes and particle transport. It is of use to workers in the field of fusion both for its wide-ranging account of tokamak physics and as a kind of handbook or formulary. This edition has been extended in a number of ways. The material on mode-particle interactions has been reformulated and much new information added, including methodology for Monte Carlo implementation of mode destabilization. These results give explicit means of carrying out mode destabilization analysis, in particular for the dangerous fishbone mode. A new chapter on cyclotron motion in toroidal geometry has been added, with comparisons of the analysis of resonances using guiding center results. A new chapter on the use of lithium lined walls has been added, a promising means of lowering the complexity and cost of full scale fusion reactors. A section on nonlocal transport has been added, including an analysis of Levy flight simulations of ion transport in the reversed field pinch in Padova, RFX.

Book Synopsis Generalized Boltzmann Physical Kinetics by : Boris V. Alexeev
Download or read book Generalized Boltzmann Physical Kinetics written by Boris V. Alexeev and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-05-25 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important result obtained by Prof. B. Alexeev and reflected in the book is connected with new theory of transport processes in gases, plasma and liquids. It was shown by Prof. B. Alexeev that well-known Boltzmann equation, which is the basement of the classical kinetic theory, is wrong in the definite sense. Namely in the Boltzmann equation should be introduced the additional terms which generally speaking are of the same order of value as classical ones. It leads to dramatic changing in transport theory. The coincidence of experimental and theoretical data became much better. Particularly it leads to the strict theory of turbulence and possibility to calculate the turbulent flows from the first principles of physics. · Boltzmann equation (BE) is valid only for particles, which can be considered as material points, generalized Boltzmann equation (GBE) removes this restriction.· GBE contains additional terms in comparison with BE, which cannot be omitted· GBE leads to strict theory of turbulence· GBE gives all micro-scale turbulent fluctuations in tabulated closed analytical form for all flows · GBE leads to generalization of electro-dynamic Maxwell equations· GBE gives new generalized hydrodynamic equations (GHE) more effective than classic Navier-Stokes equations· GBE can be applied for description of flows for intermediate diapason of Knudsen numbers· Asymptotical solutions of GBE remove contradictions in the theory of Landau damping in plasma
