Book Synopsis National Audit Office (NAO): Government Contracting: The Role of Major Contractors in the Delivery of Public Services - HC 810 by : Great Britain: National Audit Office
Download or read book National Audit Office (NAO): Government Contracting: The Role of Major Contractors in the Delivery of Public Services - HC 810 written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the memorandum 'The role of major contractors in the delivery of public services' the NAO sets out some of the benefits that can be achieved through contracting but highlights three issues that deserve greater public scrutiny. First, it raises questions about the way public service markets operate. This includes the need for scrutiny over whether public service contracts are sufficiently competitive and whether the rise of a few major contractors is in the public interest. Secondly, it highlights the issue of whether contractors' profits reflect a fair return. Understanding contractors' profits is important to ensure that their interests are aligned properly with that of the taxpayer. But transparency over rewards that contractors make is at present limited. Thirdly, the report asks how we know that contractors are delivering services to the high standards expected. In particular, government needs to ensure that large companies with sprawling structures are not paying 'lip-service' to control and that they have the right culture and control environment across their group. This requires transparency over contractors' performance and the use of contractual entitlement to information, audit and inspection. This should be backed up by the threat of financial penalties and being barred from future competitions if things are found to be wrong. A related report 'Managing government suppliers' (HC 811, session 2013-14, ISBN 9780102987034) examines the way the Cabinet Office is working to improve government's management of strategic suppliers.

Although intended primarily for journals in science, much of its content will be relevant to other scholarly areas. ?This wonderful work by Dr. Hames can be used as a textbook in courses for both experienced and novice editors, and I trust that it is what Dr. Hames intended when she prepared this beautiful book. Download or read book The Great Indian Fraud written by Smarak Swain and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do tax havens and syndicates running shell companies help fraudsters escape the long arm of the law? How does the ambiguity of valuation in the start-up ecosystem increase its vulnerability to corporate fraud? How are manufacturers and exporters from China exploiting India's Free Trade Area (FTA) with other countries to dump goods at artificially low prices in the Indian market? What challenges does the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) of China pose for regulators of India? Why do people fall for Ponzi and pyramid schemes again and again? Serious frauds affect society and economy in damaging ways, belittling the common man's trust in the system. Yet, barely do we understand how these affect our lives. A first-of-its-kind, The Great Indian Fraud reveals how all such frauds result from the manipulation of complex financial transactions, involving simple mathematics and tricks, to deceive regulators, enforcers, business partners and customers. Drawing on his experience in the fields of forensic audit and financial investigation, author Smarak Swain explains the modus operandi behind some of the most notorious cases of fraud-Haridas Mundhra, Jayanti Dharma Teja, Harshad Mehta, Ketan Parekh, Hasan Ali Khan, B. Ramalinga Raju, Nirav Modi, Vijay Mallya, Nirmal Singh Bhangoo and many more-narrating the rise and fall of the greatest fraudsters of our times. Informative and skilfully narrated, The Great Indian Fraud is a must-read to understand how frauds happen, how law enforcement agencies handle crises, the sectors that witness maximum frauds as well as the emerging sectors that are at high risk.

Book Synopsis Regulating Corporate Bribery in International Business by : Nicholas Lord
Download or read book Regulating Corporate Bribery in International Business written by Nicholas Lord and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the regulation of corporations that use bribery in international commerce to win or maintain overseas business contracts and interests. Recent large-scale cases involving multinational corporations demonstrate how large commercial ’non-criminal’ enterprises are being implicated in substantive overseas bribery scandals and illustrate the difficulties faced by responsible enforcement authorities in the UK and Germany. The book imports concepts from regulation theory to aid our understanding of the emerging enforcement, self-regulatory and hybrid responses to transnational corporate bribery. Lord implements a qualitative, comparative research strategy involving semi-structured interviews, participant observation and document analysis to provide empirical insights into this relatively invisible area of criminological interest. Despite significant cultural differences between the jurisdictions, this book argues that UK and German anti-corruption authorities face procedural, evidential, legal, financial and structural difficulties that are leading to convergence in prosecution policies. Although self-regulatory and hybrid mechanisms are aiding the response and gaining some level of regulation, the default position is one of accommodation by state agencies, even where the will to enforce the law is high. This book is essential reading for academics and students researching corporate and white-collar crimes and the concept of regulation more generally, as well as law enforcement agencies and international and intergovernmental organisations concerned with anti-corruption.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of White-Collar Crime by : Shanna R. Van Slyke
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of White-Collar Crime written by Shanna R. Van Slyke and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although white-collar crime has caused a substantial amount of damage on both the individual and societal levels, it often ranks below street crime as a matter of public concern. Thus, white-collar crime remains an ambiguous and even controversial topic among academics, with a relative dearth of scholarly focus on the issue. The Oxford Handbook of White-Collar Crime offers a comprehensive treatment of the most up-to-date theories and research regarding white-collar crime. Contributors tackle a vast range of topics, including the impact of white-collar crime, the contexts in which white-collar crime occurs, current crime policies and debates, and examinations of the criminals themselves. The volume concludes with a set of essays that discuss potential responses for controlling white-collar crime, as well as promising new avenues for future research. Uniting conceptual theories, empirical research, and ethnographic data, the Handbook provides the first unified analytic framework on white-collar crime. Given the astronomical aggregate losses to victims, building a more nuanced understanding of the dynamics of white-collar crime is a topic of immediate social concern. The definitive resource on white-collar crime, this Handbook will be a valuable resource for developing both intellectual and policy-related solutions.
Book Synopsis Countering Economic Crime by : Axel Palmer
Download or read book Countering Economic Crime written by Axel Palmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic crime is a significant feature of the UK’s economic landscape and yet despite the government’s bold mission statements ‘to hold those suspected of financial wrongdoing to account’ as part of their ‘day of reckoning’ and ‘serious about white-collar crime’ agenda, there is a sense that this is still not being done effectively. This book examines the history of the creation of the UK’s anti-economic crime institutions and accompanying legislation, providing a critique of their effectiveness. The book analyses whether the recent regulatory regime is fit for purpose as well as being appropriate for the future. In order to explore how the UK’s economic crime strategies could be improved the book takes a comparative approach analysing policy and legislative responses to economic crime in the United States and Australia in order to determine whether the UK could or should import similar structures or laws to improve the enforcement of UK economic crime.
