A number of important provisions of the NT code differ significantly from those of other Code jurisdictions, and form the common law, and these differences are worthy of serious, and separate study.

Book excerpt: For decades the Northern Territory's criminal law has stood at the jurisprudential frontier of Australia: grappling with a unique set of circumstances, almost entirely dominated by the situation of its Aboriginal people. This 2nd edition deals in detail with the sweeping changes introduced in 2005 by Part IIAA of the NT Criminal Code. These changes often mirror the Criminal Code (Cth), and have completely rewritten many of the NT Code's most significant provisions, including the law of murder, rape, and many serious offences against the person. The book covers procedure and all the major offences, together with public order offences and sentencing. It contains a separate chapter on Aboriginal people that deals with all the recent developments, including the Intervention, and a detailed chapter on the unique history of the Territory's criminal law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, a remarkable transference of responsibility to Indigenous children’s organisation has taken place in many parts of Australia, Canada, the USA and New Zealand. It has been influenced by Indigenous peoples’ human rights advocacy at national and international levels, by claims to self-determination and by the globalisation of Indigenous children’s organisations. Thus far, this reform has taken place with little attention from academic and non-Indigenous communities; now, Decolonising Indigenous Child Welfare: Comparative Perspectives considers these developments and, evaluating law reform with respect to Indigenous child welfare, asks whether the pluralisation of responses to their welfare and well-being, within a cross-cultural post-colonial context, can improve the lives of Indigenous children. The legislative frameworks for the delivery of child welfare services to Indigenous children are assessed in terms of the degree of self-determination which they afford Indigenous communities. The book draws upon interdisciplinary research and the author’s experience collaborating with the peak Australian Indigenous children’s organisation for over a decade to provide a thorough examination of this international issue. Dr Terri Libesman is a Senior Lecturer in the Law Faculty, at the University of Technology Sydney. She has collaborated, researched and published for over a decade with the peak Australian Indigenous children’s organisation.

Book excerpt: Regulating the End of Life: Death Rights is a collection of cutting-edge chapters on assisted dying and euthanasia, written by leading authors in the field. Providing an overview of current regulation on assisted dying and euthanasia, both in the UK and internationally, this book also addresses the associated debates on ethical, moral, and rights issues. It considers whether, just as there is a right to life, there should also be a right to death, especially in the context of unbearable human suffering. The unintended consequences of prohibitions on assisted dying and euthanasia are explored, and the argument put forward that knowing one can choose when and how one dies can be life-extending, rather than life-limiting. Key critiques from feminist and disability studies are addressed. The overarching theme of the collection is that death is an embodied right which we should be entitled to exercise, with appropriate safeguards, as and when we choose. Making a novel contribution to the debate on assisted dying, this interdisciplinary book will appeal to those with relevant interests in law, socio-legal studies, applied ethics, medical ethics, politics, philosophy, and sociology.
