Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soviet Risk-Taking and Crisis Behavior, first published in 1982, examines the question: for what purposes and under what conditions were Soviet leaders prepared to take risks in international relations? The first part of the book sets out to define the concept of risk and to examine its analytical relevance for foreign policy, its measurement and its relation to the dynamics of crisis. The second part consists of in-depth analysis of Soviet behavior in the Berlin crises of 1948 and 1961. The third and last part compares Soviet policy in the two crises, and the actions of the two different leaderships, as well as relating it to Soviet behavior in other geographical areas.
Book Synopsis Secret Incomes of the Soviet State Budget by : Igor Birman
Download or read book Secret Incomes of the Soviet State Budget written by Igor Birman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As far as I know, relatively little attention has been devoted in the West to the study of various financial problems in the USSR. Among 1 the works I have seen are Gallik et aI. , The Soviet, 1968 -evidently the most important work on this theme; Powell, "Monetary," 1972, in which the statistics of monetary circulation in the USSR are examin ed; Laulan, Banking, 1973, in which some of the questions I examine are also addressed; and CIA, The Soviet, 1977, which is about an analysis of the budget. Moreover, many specialists have turned to the analysis of the expenditures of the budget in an attempt to determine the amount of financing of military expenditures-for example, Holzman, Financial, 1975. Due to the scarcity of data a large number of important problems have remained unstudied in all these works. One of these is the following. If we believe official Soviet statistics, the state budget of the USSR regularly comes out with an excess of revenues over expendi tures; each year a "budget profit" is formed. This in itself already seems quite strange. We all know that the Soviet economy, although it developed quite rapidly (especially in the past), has experienced constant and serious difficulties; we know that the plans are rarely fulfilled and that there were years of great crop failures.

Book Synopsis Economic Adjustment and Reform in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union by : Franklyn D. Holzman
Download or read book Economic Adjustment and Reform in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union written by Franklyn D. Holzman and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic reform, structural adjustment, macroeconomic stabilization, and participation in the world economy are interconnected aspects of the same issue: the long-term economic viability of centrally planned economies in the rapidly changing economic environment of the modern world. Any economic strategy that focuses on only one or two of these aspects at the expense of the others is likely to fail; yet even strategies that build on all of these bases may well fail unless political leaders can muster exceptional skill, garner international support, and enjoy some good luck. The contributions to this volume reflect the recent research on this issue by various specialists on the economies of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Each author emphasizes macroeconomic stabilization, structural adjustment, participation in the larger world economy, or ecomonic reform.

This book was released on 1985-11-01 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely introduction to the study of international relations places special emphasis on the politics of international economics and the nuclear threat. Written for beginning students, the book combines comprehensive and realistic introductory material basic to the study of international relations with in-depth case studies of major issues and problem areas such as management of the world economy and management of world military power, East-West and North-South (rich nation vs. poor nation) conflicts, and the struggle for resources and ways and means of preventing World War III. Readers untrained in economics will find the subject matter introduced before it is discussed in its applied form. Henry L. Bretton has published widely on Western and non-Western government, politics, and international relations. He is currently Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the State University of New York College at Brockport.

Book Synopsis Hostage Survival by : Brian Michael Jenkins
Download or read book Hostage Survival written by Brian Michael Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For approximately the past three years, The Rand Corporation, under the joint sponsorship of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Department of State, has been studying various aspects of international terrorism. A major focus of this research effort has been on situations in which U.S. officials abroad or foreign officials in the United States might be held hostage by terrorists. This paper--drawn from material reported earlier to ARPA and State--describes some preliminary observations on the experience of the hostages. It is based largely on interviews with former hostages, including both American and foreign officials, businessmen who have been kidnapped abroad, and several private American citizens who were kidnapped and held for ransom in the United States. The observations here are preliminary; they are being circulated in the form of a paper for the sake of timeliness. A more detailed Rand report is forthcoming. (Author).
