Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the general public follow the Olympic Games on television, on the internet, even in the newspapers, they feel like they have themselves experienced the performances of the athletes. This book explores whether it is ever possible to experience the Olympic Games as an athletic event without considering the effect of the media. It addresses a multitude of ways in which the intermediary of media production alters the experience of the Olympics. Spectators watching Olympic events from the stands are less subjected to the language of the commentators, journalists, and even the athlete interviews as they form impressions and understandings of the games. However, even those who sit in the stands for the opening ceremonies or walk down the streets of the Olympic Village and the host city are treated to media spectacles that are intentionally produced to display the attitudes, values, and beliefs of the host country and its Olympic Committee. This book performs the important task of analysing ways in which the media serves as both an integral component and an arbiter of the Games for society. This book was originally published as a special issue of Mass Communication and Society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shiny rings of the Olympic Games have grown tarnished over the years as doping, corruption and other scandals rise to the surface. Those scandals are the tip of the iceberg, according to author Christopher Shaw, the lead spokesperson for several anti-Games groups. Five Ring Circus details the history of how Vancouver won the bid for the 2010 Games, who was involved, and what the real motives were. It describes the role of corporate media in promoting the Games, the machinations of government and business, and the opposition that emerged. Disturbing questions come to light: Why does the IOC pay no taxes? Who are the real estate developers behind the Vancouver bid? Why are mega projects paid for with tax dollars? What are the true costs of the Games? The Olympic Games, once considered the pinnacle of athleticism and fair play, have become a cesspool of greed, backroom deals and the wholesale trampling of civil liberties. In Vancouver, preparations for the 2010 Games have had a substantial negative impact on the environment and has resulted in the "economic cleansing" of the poor and homeless. This book is a cautionary tale for future Olympic bid cities, and will appeal to those concerned about the effects of globalization on many aspects of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims to outline the progress, problems and challenges of delivering a safe and secure Olympics in the context of the contemporary serious and enduring terrorist threat. The enormous media profile and symbolic significance of the Olympic Games, the history of terrorists aiming to use such high-profile events to advance their cause, and Al Qaeda's aim to cause mass casualties, all have major implications for the security of London 2012. Drawing on contributions from leading academics and practitioners in the field the book will assess the current terrorist threat, particularly focusing on terrorist targeting and how the Olympics might feature in this, before addressing particular response themes such as transport security, the role of surveillance, resilient designing of Olympic sites, the role of private security, and the challenge of inter-agency coordination. The book will conclude by providing an assessment of the legacy of Olympic security to date and will discuss the anticipated issues and dilemmas of the future. This book will be of interest to students of terrorism studies, security studies, counter-terrorism and sports studies.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because British Columbia is investing significant resources in the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and potentially may have to commit additional resources through guarantees and indemnifications, the Office of the Auditor General decided to conduct regular reviews of the reasonableness of the Province's cost estimates to undertake the Games. This second report on the topic is based on information to August 31, 2006. It summarizes the Province's latest estimates of the Games costs and the current budget of the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC) and examines the processes used to develop the current estimates and the assumptions underlying those estimates. It also examines the processes used to identify the risks associated with the planning and staging of the Games, and to develop plans for managing those risks. It includes a response from the Province.

The authors evaluated the development of expenditure and revenues of the organizing committees to operate the event, and the investment of taxpayers’ money for Olympic venues (non‐OCOG budget). The study is based on data collected worldwide and is currently the most advanced study on cost and revenue changes of Olympic Games.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report develops a sensitivity model to measure the impact of bidding for & hosting the 2010 Winter Olympic & Paralympic Games and the impact of the attendant international media exposure on tourism volumes. The model estimates the gross domestic product, tax revenue, & employment effects under a range of cost & tourism conditions. It segregates the incremental economic impact, in a sense the net profit to the British Columbia & federal treasuries uniquely attributable to the Games, from the gross economic impact, and examines the tourism-related impacts over an extended period. The model results are presented for four scenarios which reflect the experience at other Olympics & international expositions: a conservative scenario based on a minimal marketing effort, an aggressive scenario based on a highly effective & focussed high-impact international marketing campaign, and two in-between scenarios reflecting average & better than average marketing efforts. The impact on the model of external risks such as a prolonged recession, uncertain broadcast revenue, & interruption of the Games is also discussed. The appendix contains details of the economic model.
