Book excerpt: Fracture-toughness testing using principles of fracture mechanics has developed to the point where it can be used as a basis for selection of materials, for estimating limiting design stresses assuming the presence of small flaws, and for analyzing failures. Current methods of measuring plane-stress and plane-strain fracturetoughness parameters are presented in this report. The specimens include center-cracked, edge-cracked, single-edge-cracked, surface-cracked, and notched round bars, which are subjected to tensile loading, and notched bars for bend tests. The different types of specimens permit evaluating sheet, plate, bar stock, and forgings as well as material from failed structures. Application of fracture-toughness parameters to design of high-strength structures is reviewed for both static and fatigue loading. Consideration of the fracture-mechanics concepts in design should lead to fewer problems with brittle fracture in high-strength structures. (Author).

Book excerpt: A review of data generated utilizing ASTM Method E 399 since its last substantial revision in 1971 illustrates the importance of most of the major provisions and criteria for validity, but also that some technical revisions of the criteria are justified. For the standard geometry of specimen (a = B), the Pmax/PQ criterion is a useful indicator of plane-strain crack resistance curve characteristics and should not be "stretched" or ignored in establishing the validity of test data. Alternative geometries are also useful in measuring KIc so long as B > ̄ 2.5 (KIc/?ys)2, but the present Pmax/PQ limit is too severe for W/B > 2; there is a need to establish alternative limiting values of Pmax/PQ to go with the alternative geometries. With regard to fatigue precracking, the Kfmax during fatigue precracking could be increased from 0.6 to 0.8 KIc, and the limits on fatigue crack front straightness could be modified to permit differences of as much as 10 percent among the middle three measurements.

Par ticular emphases are given to predicting crack initiation, subcritical growth and the onset of rapid fracture from a single criterion. Those models in which it is assumed that the crack extends from tip to tip rely on the specific surface energy concept. The differences in the global and energy states before and after crack extension were associated with the energy required to create a unit area of crack surface. Applications were limited by the requirement of self-similar crack growth.
