Book excerpt: "The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) conducts human health risk assessments as part of its mission to ensure the protection of workers and public health in the state. The risk assessments identify potential health hazards posed by pesticides, characterize dose-response relationships, and estimate exposure to characterize potential risks to humans. [...] Review of California's Risk-Assessment Process for Pesticides examines DPR's processes of hazard identification, exposure assessment, dose-response analysis, and risk characterization to determine whether they are consistent with best practices. This report also evaluates the methods used for setting priorities among pesticides for risk assessment and identifies possible options for improving efficiency and productivity." --

This revised edition contains a new format making it even easier to study for the DPR exams. In addition to the review questions found at the end of each chapter, this new edition contains knowledge expectations at the beginning of each chapter. These brief statements describe what you are expected to learn after reading that chapter, allowing you to study more effectively for DPR’s pesticide applicator licensing (QAL/QAC) exams. These knowledge expectations are also highlighted in sidebars throughout each chapter, providing a study roadmap so you know which sections of each chapter are most important. Also new: Updated pesticides table to reflect products available in CaliforniaUpdated information on nematodes, vertebrates, and pathogensExpanded information on environmental hazards, expanded information on personal protective equipment including EPA respirator criteriaUp-to-date information on worker protection standardsExpanded information on pesticide resistanceUpdated compliance guidelines for pesticide use reporting as required by California lawA dedicated chapter covering label reading, including an updated label that reflects current regulations The Safe and Effective Use of Pesticides provides detailed information for selecting, using, handling, storing, and disposing of pesticides. It emphasizes worker protection, prevention of groundwater contamination, protection of endangered species and wildlife, and reduction of environmental problems. This is a significant update to the 2nd Edition, so everyone will want to update their reference library with this new edition. The principles described in this volume apply to all areas of pest control, including agricultural, structural, landscape, greenhouse, and public health applications. Volume 1 in the Pesticide Application Compendium. This is recommended study material for all categories of the California Department of Pesticide Regulation’s (DPR) Qualified Pesticide Applicator License (QAL) and Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) exams.

Evidence of pesticide contamination of surface waters has spurred interest in aquatic pesticide exposure and its subsequent effects on humans and the environment. This book discusses monitoring, aquatic toxicology, risk assessment, modeling, mitigation, and regulatory efforts to minimize contaminants and protect environmental integrity. Researchers and students at universities, chemists and toxicologists at agrochemical companies and contract laboratories, and consultants involved with resource conservation and environmental risk mitigation will find this work helpful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing the risk of exposure to pesticides is important for all Americans, but especially for children, whose developing systems can be more susceptible to harm. The Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 (FQPA) requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which regulates the use of pesticides at the federal level, to reevaluate the amounts of pesticide residues allowed on or in food-known as tolerances. EPA must ensure that the tolerances are safe, that is, that there is a reasonable certainty that no harm will result from exposure from all food and nonfood sources. EPA must consider available information concerning the combined or cumulative effects on children from groups of pesticides that may act on the body in similar harmful ways. You asked us to examine how EPA is applying these requirements of the FQPA. We focused our efforts on three questions: (1) What approach has EPA developed for making decisions about applying the new safety factor? (2) What progress has been made in considering aggregate exposure and cumulative effects? (3) What progress has been made in reassessing tolerances for pesticide residues? This report is based in part on a review of documents related to safety factor determinations and pesticide risk assessments, as well as a review of EPAs database for tracking tolerance reassessments. We supplemented this analysis with interviews at EPA, as well as with federal health agencies, chemical industry and environmental groups, and outside experts. We did not evaluate EPAs regulatory decisions or the quality of the data behind them.

Book excerpt: Agricultural workers face greater threats from pesticide-related illnesses -- including acute poisonings and long-term effects such as cancer and birth defects -- than any other sector of society. Farmworkers and their children, are exposed to pesticides while working in and living near the fields. To shed light on this issue, the CA for Pesticide Reform issued a report on the problem in June 1999, presenting CA Dept. of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) data showing that from 1991 to 1996 DPR reported nearly 4,000 cases of farmworker pesticide poisoning, and concluding that the problem was even more serious. This report, in both English and Spanish, updates that 1999 report and shows that farmworkers continue to face unacceptable threats of exposure to hazardous pesticides.
