Book Synopsis The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the European Union (EU) by : Johannes Muntschick
Download or read book The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the European Union (EU) written by Johannes Muntschick and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores regionalism in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and highlights the influence of the European Union (EU) as an extra-regional actor on the organization and integration process. The analysis is guided by theory and explains the emergence, institutional design and performance of SADC’s major integration projects in the issue areas of the economy, security and infrastructure. It provides in this way a profound assessment of the organization as a whole. The study shows that South Africa plays a regional key role as driver for integration while external influence of the EU is ambivalent in character because it unfolds a supportive or obstructive impact. The author argues that the EU gains influence over regional integration processes in the SADC on the basis of patterns of asymmetric interdependence and becomes a ‘game-changer’ insofar as it facilitates or impedes solutions to regional cooperation problems.
Book Synopsis Transfrontier Conservation in Africa by : Maano Ramutsindela
Download or read book Transfrontier Conservation in Africa written by Maano Ramutsindela and published by CABI. This book was released on 2007 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transfrontier conservation is a global concept, which encompasses the protection of biodiversity spanning the borders of two or more countries in ways that support local economic development, international relations and peace. Nowhere is this more relevant but highly debatable than in Africa, which is home to a third of the world's terrestrial biodiversity, while at the same time hosting its poorest nations. This is one of the first books to account for the emergence of transfrontier conservation in Africa against international experiences in bioregional planning. The roles of the state and local populations are analyzed, as well as the ecological, socio-economic and political implications.
Book Synopsis New Regionalism and the European Union by : Alex Warleigh-Lack
Download or read book New Regionalism and the European Union written by Alex Warleigh-Lack and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debates on regionalism have been polarized between European Union (EU) scholars and non-EU scholars, with the assumption being that regionalism within the EU and other regions of the world are quite distinct, with little to be learnt from dialogue with each other. This book challenges such assumptions and calls for a genuine debate between scholars of regionalism. This book demonstrates that more can and needs to be learned about regional integration all over the world through comparison and reflection on specific regional trends. Beginning with a theoretically driven introduction, leading experts in the field are brought together to offer a series of case studies on regional integration within Latin America, Africa, Asia, North America and Europe. In Part III the authors investigate the links between the EU and selected other regional organisations and processes, exploring the dynamics through which these interregional relations are developing and the implications they have for the study of contemporary regionalism/regionalisation both inside and beyond the continent of Europe. The conclusions set out a challenging research agenda for comparative studies in the field. Addressing one of the under-explored aspects of EU studies, the EU’s coexistence with other pan-continental/regional organisations in the European continent, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of regionalism, IPE, European Studies and international politics.
Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Regionalism by : F. Söderbaum
Download or read book The Political Economy of Regionalism written by F. Söderbaum and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-10-29 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Political Economy of Regionalism: The Case of Southern Africa challenges prevailing wisdom, showing how ruling political elites and 'big business' join forces with certain external actors in order to promote market integration and economic globalization, boost regimes, and to satisfy group-specific and even personal interests. Only rarely do these forms of regionalism contribute to the poor and disadvantaged, who instead opt out, and survive through informal economic regionalisms or seek to create regionalisms rooted in civil society.

Book excerpt: This book analyses whether the design of the institutions of Southern African Development Community (SADC) reflects the community’s treaty objectives and principles of democracy and the rule of law. The author provides a detailed analysis of the policy making and oversight institutions of SADC. Additionally, the project looks at institutional and legal frameworks of similar organisations (the East African Community, the Economic Community of West African States and the European Union) for comparative purposes. This work is written largely from a legal perspective, specifically international institutional law; however, it carries cross-disciplinary themes, including governance, and especially the subject of public policy making at the international level.

Book Synopsis Regional Economic Communities and Integration in Southern Africa by : Leon Mwamba Tshimpaka
Download or read book Regional Economic Communities and Integration in Southern Africa written by Leon Mwamba Tshimpaka and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines regional integration in Africa, with a particular focus on the Southern African Development Community (SADC). It argues that the SADC’s pursuit of a rationalist and state-centric form of integration for Southern Africa is limited, as it overlooks the contributory role and efficacy of non-state actors, who are relegated to the periphery. The book demonstrates that civil society networks in Southern Africa constitute well-governed, self-organised entities that function just like formal regional arrangements driven by state actors and technocrats. The book amplifies this point by deploying New Institutionalism and the New Regionalism Approach to examine the role and efficacy of non-state actors in building regions from below. The book develops a unique typology that shows how Southern African regional civil society networks adopt strategies, norms and rules to establish an efficient form of alternative integration in the region. Based on a critical analysis of this self-organised regionalism, the book projects the reality that alternative regionalism driven by non-state actors is possible. This book expands the study of regionalism in the SADC, and makes a significant and innovative contribution to the study of contemporary regionalism.

Book Synopsis Revisiting Regionalism in Southern Africa by :
Download or read book Revisiting Regionalism in Southern Africa written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 3 and 4 September 2007, the Institute for Global Dialogue (IGD) and the Friedrich Ebert-Stiftung (FES) jointly hosted the fourth Southern African Forum on Trade (SAFT) on the theme of 'Revisiting regionalism in Southern Africa.' Like its predecessors, the fourth SAFT provided a platform for critical debate and reflection on trade-related matters, bringing together from the region academics, activists, policy-makers, and senior officials working in the field. This latest meeting of the SAFT was aimed at revisiting the approach to regional economic integration adopted by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) from both a normative and an empirical perspective. One objective was to provide a basis from which to assess the current trajectory of regional integration and co-operation in SADC beyond the milestones for deeper integration set by SADC itself. This was done by taking a step back, and having a fresh look at different models of regionalism with regard to their respective potential in meeting the socio-economic and political development challenges of Southern Africa.
