Book excerpt: The novels and stories included in this book literally express the moral and ethic problems alarming the contemporary world including the destruction of traditions, feelings of uselessness and indifference. The writer tries to reflect the torments and suffering, the alienation problem penetrating to society's morality, through the characters in these stories, representing various social levels. The subjects and problems of the novels and stories differ, however, the author's style of view and attitude to the described events and manner of literal generalization make them closer at a certain level.

Book excerpt: ASCD Bestseller! Wiggins and McTighe provide an expanded array of practical tools and strategies for designing curriculum, instruction, and assessments that lead students at all grade levels to genuine understanding. How do you know when students understand? Can you design learning experiences that make it much more likely that students understand content and apply it in meaningful ways? Thousands of educators have used the Understanding by Design (UbD) framework to answer these questions and create more rigorous, engaging curriculums. Now, this expanded 2nd edition gives you even more tools and strategies for results-oriented teaching: * An improved template for creating curriculum units based on the breakthrough "backward design" method. * More specific guidelines on how to frame the "big ideas" you want students to understand. * Better ways to develop the "essential questions" that form the foundation of high-quality curriculum and assessment. * An expanded toolbox of instructional approaches for obtaining the desired results of a lesson. * More examples, across all grade levels and subjects, of how schools and districts have used the UbD framework to maximize student understanding. Educators from kindergarten through college can get everything they need—guidelines, stages, templates, and tips—to start designing lessons, units, and courses that lead to improved student performance and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

Book excerpt: Helicopter Dynamics Introduced in an Organized and Systematic Manner A result of lecture notes for a graduate-level introductory course as well as the culmination of a series of lectures given to designers, engineers, operators, users, and researchers, Fundamentals of Helicopter Dynamics provides a fundamental understanding and a thorough overview of helicopter dynamics and aerodynamics. Written at a basic level, this text starts from first principles and moves fluidly onward from simple to more complex systems. Gain Valuable Insight on Helicopter Theory Divided into 11 chapters, this text covers historical development, hovering and vertical flight, simplified rotor blade model in flap mode, and forward flight. It devotes two chapters to the aeroelastic response and stability analysis of isolated rotor blade in uncoupled and coupled modes. Three chapters address the modeling of coupled rotor–fuselage dynamics and the associated flight dynamic stability, and provide a simplified analysis of the ground resonance aeromechanical stability of a helicopter. Explains equations derived from first principles and approximations Contains a complete set of equations which can be used for preliminary studies Requires a basic first–level course in dynamics, as well as a basic first–level course in aerodynamics Useful for any student who wants to learn the complexities of dynamics in a flying vehicle, Fundamentals of Helicopter Dynamics is an ideal resource for aerospace/aeronautical, helicopter, and mechanical/control engineers, as well as air force schools and helicopter/rotorcraft manufacturers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coloring books became a thing when adults discovered how relaxing and meditative they were. Jigsaw puzzles roared back into popularity as an immersive activity, not to mention a great alternative to television. How exciting is it, then, to introduce an activity that tops them both: reverse coloring, which not only confers the mindful benefits of coloring and puzzling but energizes you to feel truly creative, even when you're weary and just want to zone out. It's so simple, yet so profoundly satisfying. Each page in The Reverse Coloring Book has the colors, and you draw the lines. Created by the artist Kendra Norton, these beautiful and whimsical watercolors provide a gentle visual guide so open-ended that the possibilities are limitless. Trace the shapes, draw in figures, doodle, shade, cover an area with dots. Be realistic, with a plan, or simply let your imagination drift, as if looking a clouds in the sky. Each page is an invitation to slow down, let go, and thoughtfully (or thoughtlessly) let your pen find its way over the image. The Reverse Coloring Book includes 50 original works of art, printed on sturdy paper that's single-sided and perforated. And unlike with traditional coloring books, all you need is a pen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the causes and effects of transient (water hammer) events in liquid-filled pipes, and describes how the powerful and stable Wave Plan Method (WPM) can be used to address transients during surge modeling. The authors compare and contrast WPM with the Method of Characteristics (MOC), which is the other widely-used surge analysis tool. While MOC can be useful for many situations, the larger and more complex a model becomes, the more the computational efficiency of WPM is necessary to avoid longer and longer analysis times. The authors also describe how WPM is more generalizable than MOC, which is a term that describes a suite of tools consisting of several variants that were developed to address different modeling situations. This book provides details on surge modeling in general and the use of WPM in particular. This includes pressure attenuation, determination of wave speeds in different pipe types and various liquid media, pump and turbine characteristics curves, and the effects of boundary conditions. The discussion of boundary conditions includes an extensive look at the effects of the air-water interface as it applies to bulk air intrusion into pipelines, and as it relates to the use of air/vacuum valves as surge protection. The authors discuss surge protection design for different real-world scenarios, and how to model of a full list of surge control devices, including a detailed discussion of check valves. Last, the book describes the assumptions and uncertainties encountered during data collection and model building, and examines the potential effect of these uncertainties. Where uncertainties cannot be mitigated, the authors discuss ways to increase the safety factor of surge protection designs.
