Le premier chapitre analyse les déterminants de la réussite de la RTT, tant en matière de créations d’emplois que d’accroissement de l’emploi non qualifié relativement à l’emploi qualifié. En considérant un cadre d’analyse qui tient compte des principaux canaux de transmission de l’effet de la RTT sur l’emploi, nous montrons que ces deux types de déterminants sont différents. Le deuxième chapitre mobilise l’enquête de la Banque de France sur la durée d’utilisation des équipements (DUE, 1989-2004) pour évaluer l’effet du passage aux 35 heures sur la DUE. Nous trouvons que la RTT aurait occasionné une baisse temporaire de la DUE de 4 à 10 points de pourcentage en 2000 dans les entreprises passées aux 35 heures par rapport aux autres. Dans le troisième chapitre, nous étudions les conditions d’adoption de la RTT. Nous montrons que la prise en compte des contraintes organisationnelles caractérisant les entreprises et présentes dans l’enquête C.O.I. (1997) permet d’expliquer l’essentiel des différences existant entre les entreprises dans les dates de passage aux 35 heures et le bénéfice des aides financières associées.
