Book Synopsis Adapting Traditional Farm Buildings by : David Pickles

Book excerpt: Traditional farmsteads and farm buildings make an important contribution to the remarkably varied character of England's landscape. They are fundamental to its sense of place and local distinctiveness. Although the majority of traditional farm buildings have now become partly or wholly redundant for modern agricultural purposes unsupported by income to fund their maintenance and repair, they often have the potential to be of economic value in terms of their capacity to accommodate a variety of new uses. Successful adaptive reuse of any farmstead or building depends upon an understanding of its significance, its relationship to the wider landscape setting and its sensitivity to and capacity for change. This advice is aimed at owners of farm buildings, building professionals and local authority planning and conservation officers. It explains how significance can be retained and enhanced through well-informed maintenance and sympathetic development, provided that repairs, design and implementation are carried out to a high standard. This replaces The Conversion of Traditional Farm Buildings published September 2006.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Farm-building plans are as variable, almost, as is the individuality of those building and using them, and in making this selection, we have been guided by the practical merits of the designs, including only such as have proved their value by constant use on the farm. In poultry buildings it has been our special purpose to present plans which illustrate the marked tendency of recent years, which has been to open up the houses to sunshine and fresh air; a tendency which makes conditions more wholesome and promotes the good health and greater profitableness of the flocks." This book contains illustrations and plans for the construction of various structures that would be found on the average farm.

Book Synopsis Creative Re-Use of Buildings by : Derek Latham
Download or read book Creative Re-Use of Buildings written by Derek Latham and published by . This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creative re-use is more than conversion or rehabilitation of a property for new, or continued, use. The two volumes of this book offer numerous illustrated examples of the innovative work by a range of architects in addition to key projects from Derek Latham's own practice. Volume 1 focuses on the challenge of identifying a suitable building, understanding its essential qualities, and selecting an option appropriate for both its setting and the people who will use it. It discusses the choice between design intervention, repair and replication, and when to use new techniques or traditional skills. Additional guidance is provided through a wide range of example, notes, such as survey tips, and case studies. Volume 2 offers an extensive collection of illustrated examples from different parts of the UK showing buildings of every shape, size and type. Each building type is examined separately: country houses, hospitals, industrial buildings, offices, railway stations, farms with outbuildings, churches, schools and many others. It then describes the range of potential re-uses that might be considered, taking account of their size and suitability for the relevant function. This book will be of interest to all those involved in the debate about our future built environment particularly architects, surveyors, planners, developers and conservation professionals.

Download or read book Adaptive Reuse written by Liliane Wong and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building in existing fabric requires more than practical solutions and stylistic skills. The adaptive reuse of buildings, where changes in the structure go along with new programs and functions, poses the fundamental question of how the past should be included in the design for the future. On the background of long years of teaching and publishing, and using vivid imagery from Frankenstein to Rem Koolhaas and beyond, the author provides a comprehensive introduction to architectural design for adaptive reuse projects. History and theory, building typology, questions of materials and construction, aspects of preservation, urban as well as interior design are dealt with in ways that allow to approach adaptive reuse as a design practice field of its own right.
