Book excerpt: ENCOUNTERS IN A NOISY WORLD - The finitude of eternity If the view of things is different from the hitherto accustomed one, something is formed, which does that service to the well-worn life, the appearance of which does not become aware of its distinctness to everyone. If, nevertheless, wise souls tell each other stories about sensitive people, whose world is a lot quieter than that of the others outside, it seems as if they are completely drawn into the spell of the events, wherever this path leads. Heights & depths crossing the voices sound invites to listen to those whose cry once overheard. Only very few hear their call, which knocks on the border of eternity and asks for admission. Drowned out in this world as well as in the other, that heart only finds rest, whose word purely faces the questions, which life gives it. Each tone interwoven with the finiteness, its sound leads into that connectedness which knows the vastness of the unspeakable. A story of a young man at the limit of his resistance.

Book excerpt: A HILARIOUS TALE OF THE DREADED HIGH-SCHOOL REUNION, INCLUDING DRASTIC WEIGHT LOSS, UNREQUITED LOVE, AND SHATTERED FANTASIES Reunion is a semiautobiographical book that recounts the events of the summer of 2009, when Pascal Girard received an invitation to attend his ten-year high-school reunion. Initially dismissing the idea of attending, he quickly changes his mind when he receives an e-mail from Lucie Coté, the girl he had a huge crush on in high school. She tells Pascal that she will be at the reunion and wonders if he would like to accompany her. Pascal becomes flustered with joy, but two problems remain: he must keep his almost uncontrollable infatuation a secret from his girlfriend, Julie, and he must do something about his weight. At 252 pounds, he frets that his weight will put him in the "loser" category among his former classmates, but most of all, he must do something to impress Lucie. He decides on a drastic plan of action: he takes up jogging every day until he reaches his goal of shedding fifty pounds. Three months pass as Pascal dutifully jogs and fantasizes about meeting Lucie, until finally he reaches his weight goal on the eve of the reunion. The now-slender Pascal arrives at the big event, full of fervent anticipation. However, one by one, his fantasies of moving into the "winner" category become cruelly deflated with each conversation he has with his former classmates. Girard has quickly emerged as one of the best under-thirty cartoonists in North America. Having started drawing comics only five years ago (he worked in construction until recently), Girard's talent as both a writer and an artist has taken enormous strides with each new book he has created. Reunion is laugh-out-loud funny, with wry, self-deprecating humor, and Girard's cartooning is effortless in its fluidity.

Book excerpt: Reunion begins and ends with the 45th reunion of the 1960 class of Princeton, West Virginia. Set in a small town on the southern edge of the state, it deals with usual themes of coming-of-age and high school, as well as the once-in-a-lifetime experience of desegregation and its impact on a group of friends. In addition, the debut novel, written in the first person in an engaging style, probes the relationship, or lack of it, between an emotionally-distant father and his son, who much later in life begins to understand what it means to grow up as the adult child of an alcoholic. The characters are rich and varied, with the very essence of Americana: high school, football, and social interactions on multiple levels; the music of the 50's; the thrill of short-wave ham radio; a unique peer group, including an emerging high school rock band; and of course the family of origin, a complex mix of stately Virginians and more informal Kentuckians.

Book excerpt: Kati Voß issue II of the series "BIOGRAPHY IN ART" category: spirituality english version BIOGRAPHY OF LIFE - Leaving a trace Falling into the depths. That language of the deaf let them be heard in the voices of the mute. This world was not always as it was now. Sly in her perception of the lines in between, Theres did not fit into a scheme at all, even if the 'F' had already been dropped. Her longing for belonging had dissipated. Now she interwove her life of otherness with the storms of timeless time as well as the winds of the seas. She did not think like all the others. Earlier, as a child, she had not noticed it at all. She never fought for anyone's favour. That was probably why she was overlooked by all the ideal images of the old days. When these met her today, astonishment was interwoven with realisation: every world offered for sale made her shatter: the beauty of the inside turned towards the light in the dark as well as from the dark towards the light.

Book excerpt: This stunning successor to Ouimet’s debut, I Go Quiet, follows a girl learning to express herself and connect with others. When I am swept into the light of life, I get loud. A girl finds her voice and befriends a stranger, who becomes her closest companion. They speak and sing and laugh, their friendship weathering darkness and light, stormy seas and calm waters. Then, embarking on an uncertain journey to a new land with thousands of others, they become separated. The girl worries that her voice alone is too quiet to find her friend and make herself known—but it’s their voices that lead them back to each other, and that preserve their pasts and pave their future in a new home. The companion to David Ouimet’s acclaimed debut, I Go Quiet, I Get Loud is a poetic and arresting fable about the power of expression and human connection in the face of change.

But to their dismay, that lesson hasn't quite caught on--the three siblings just can't seem to take a chance and find love in their own lives. There's Ford, the eldest, devoted to his work and resistant to romance...or so he claims. Cooper, the middle child, can't get past his divorce--until he reconnects with a feisty baker from his past. And Palmer, the baby of the family, is the free-spirited world traveler who always pictured herself with someone other than a handsome small-town family doctor. When the Chance siblings come together to plan the ultimate anniversary party for their parents, they'll have to navigate romantic entanglements, sibling rivalries, and the definitive end of their childhood. Whatever happens, The Reunion promises to be a fun, flirty, wild ride.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this astonishing book, the author's purpose is to help transform individuals by fostering a spirit of holy listening that enriches faith and opens seekers to the fullness of God's presence and of the neighbor's need. The intent is to help the reader develop a faith that seeks understanding and makes real meaning in a world of chatter. In each chapter, a prominent work of art is interpreted, which serves as a focal point for demonstrating how the eyes and heart are integrally involved in hearing the Spirit of God. The book explores why holy listening is so difficult by examining key hermeneutical issues within the biblical text and by considering the nature of God, the journey of faith, and human limits. This illuminating book also examines the spiritual need for holy listening and analyzes critical questions of faith that lead to a greater awareness of self and the church in the mutual calling to be the incarnation of Jesus Christ in a postmodern world. Essential in the task of holy listening is an awareness of the importance of spiritual rest and the role of the Sabbath plays in providing an opportunity to participate in the redeeming work of God. In this regard, the book underscores the need for faith this is both a linear journey toward wholeness and an ability to make home and community along life's way. The need for holy listening is made even more acute by the reality of suffering that accompanies life's pilgrimage, and the book ponders the meaning of suffering and how it can open one to the presence of the divine. More than a theological analysis of suffering, the book addresses the author's effort to listen for redemptive meaning in light of his own daughter's struggle with juvenile diabetes. The book concludes with a discussion of the spiritual value of silence as the way to experience anew the story of Jesus who beckon those who listen to follow through a life of service and love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since William Dean Howells declared his "realism war" in the 1880s, literary historians have regarded the rise of "realism" and "naturalism" as the great development in American post-Civil War fiction. Yet there are many problems with this generalization. It is virtually impossible, for example, to extract from the novels and manifestoes of American writers of this period any consistent definitions of realism or naturalism as modes of literary representation. Rather than seek common traits in widely divergent "realist" and "naturalist" literary works, Michael Davitt Bell focuses here on the role that these terms played in the social and literary discourse of the 1880s and 1890s. Bell argues that in America, "realism" and "naturalism" never achieved the sort of theoretical rigor that they did in European literary debate. Instead, the function of these ideas in America was less aesthetic than ideological, promoting as "reality" a version of social normalcy based on radically anti-"literary" and heavily gendered assumptions. What effects, Bell asks, did ideas about realism and naturalism have on writers who embraced and resisted them? To answer this question, he devotes separate chapters to the work of Howells and Frank Norris (the principal American advocates of realism and naturalism in the 1880s and 1890s), Mark Twain, Henry James, Stephen Crane, Theodore Dreiser, and Sarah Orne Jewett. Bell reveals that a chief function of claiming to be a realist or a naturalist was to provide assurance that one was a "real" man rather than an "effeminate" artist. Since the 1880s, Bell asserts, all serious American fiction writers have had to contend with this problematic conception of literaryrealism. The true story of the transformation of American fiction after the Civil War is the history of this contention - a history of individual accommodations, evasions, holding actions, and occasional triumphs.

Book excerpt: This is a collection of new essays on one of the most important works of New England local colour fiction, The Country of the Pointed Firs by Sarah Orne Jewett. It builds on feminist literary scholarship that affirms the importance and value of Jewett's work, but goes beyond previously published studies by offering an analysis of how race, nationalism, and the literary marketplace shape her narrative. The volume constitutes a major rethinking of Jewett's contribution to American literature, and will be of broad interest to the fields of American literary studies, feminist cultural criticism, and American studies.

Wisconsin, 1941 With all the men off to war, Fritzi and her sisters must learn men’s work -- from fixing flats to driving the tow truck. They add their own touches, too: neat little caps, short skirts and roller skates, and the All-Girl Filling Station is born. Their peace doesn’t last long though: skilled women are needed to fly planes for the war effort. Alabama, 2005 Mrs Sookie Earle has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to putting her feet up. But then one day a package arrives. Its contents knock Sookie sideways, propelling her back to the 1940s, and four irrepressible sisters whose wartime adventures force them to reimagine who they are, and what they are capable of.
