Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cross-Border Investing: The Case of Central and Eastern Europe offers a view that reflects two main hypotheses: -You cannot understand foreign direct investment (FDI) trends and developments unless you understand the company's motives to invest, -You cannot understand a company's cross-border investment decision-making unless you understand what the investment area offers. This is the reason why this text builds up a relationship between the world of companies' decision-makers and that of the policy makers in the public sector. It does so by linking the business processes to the factors that together constitute the location profile of a country or a region. Based on more than 15 years of practical experience as well as research in the field of FDI, Dr Julia Djarova offers a Cross-Border Investment Model to describe the logic behind the decision-making process concerning foreign investments made by companies. The model is illustrated by a number of case studies of multinationals.

Book excerpt: Were the U.S. to persistently earn substantially more on its foreign investments ("U.S. claims") than foreigners earn on their U.S. investments ("U.S. liabilities"), the likelihood that the current environment of sizeable global imbalances will evolve in a benign manner increases. However, using a monthly dataset on the foreign equity and bond portfolios of U.S. investors and the U.S. equity and bond portfolios of foreign investors, we find that the returns differential for portfolio securities is near zero, far smaller than previously reported. Examining all U.S. claims and liabilities (portfolio securities as well as direct investment and banking), we find that previous estimates of large differentials are biased upward. The bias owes to computing implied returns from an internally inconsistent dataset of revised data; original data produce a much smaller differential. We also attempt to reconcile our finding of a near zero returns differential with observed patterns of cumulated current account deficits, the net international investment position, and the net income balance. Overall, we find no evidence that the U.S. can count on earning substantially more on its claims than it pays on its liabilities.

Book excerpt: As cross border investment flow has grown significantly in the recent years, especially after 2008-2009 global financial crisis where liquidities started to flood the market which made global-seeking opportunities beyond border becomes growingly essential, it remains important for one to uncover the current international investment trend. Home bias phenomena and country's income classification has strongly been responsible to movement in international investment trend and therefore becomes the strongest emphasize used in this paper. Specifically, this paper attempts to revisit current literatures and tries to use the existing literature to examine whether the current trend in investors' domestic and foreign holding across the country groups has expressed optimum principle and if the principle can be applied in nowadays condition. Using equity market as sample, this paper finds the literature can explain what has been behind investors decision in diversifying internationally by dividing the factors into four broad categories (fundamental aspect, behavioural anomaly, governance or institutional constraints, and liquidity premia). On the optimisation principle side, literature shows that there lies positive but diminishing gap in actual and optimum domestic holding both in high and middle income countries, justified by return (equity index) movement and trade cost. This result, however, strongly needs to be improved as it has poor relevance with current condition.

It gives practical guidance to financial service firms and investors to help them understand the issues involved, trends and practicalities of maximizing returns on investment. Most of the $200 billion of withholding tax lost by investors annually is due to lack of awareness and not asking the right questions of their brokers and custodian banks. Financial institutions are also increasingly being held to a higher standard by investors for provision of withholding tax services because of the impact it can have on portfolio performance. This book seeks to raise awareness of the issues and provide more detail about how the system works and what challenges and changes readers should expect in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can financial integration, particularly the cross-border investments of multinational firms, help explain the synchronization of business cycles? This paper presents evidence on the comovement of returns and investment within U.S. multinational firms to address this question. These firms constitute significant fractions of economic output and investment in most large economies, suggesting that they could create significant economic linkages. Aggregate measures of rates of return and investment rates of U.S. multinational firms located in different countries are highly correlated across countries. Firm-level regressions demonstrate that rates of return and investment rates of affiliates are highly correlated with the rates of return and investment of the affiliate's parent and other affiliates within the same parent system, controlling for country and industry factors. The evidence on these interrelationships and the importance of multinationals to local economies suggests that global firms may be an important channel for transmitting economic shocks. This evidence also sheds light on asset pricing puzzles related to the diversification benefits provided by multinational firms.

Book excerpt: Despite heady growth in cross-border investment into commercial real estate over recent decades, there are few studies that examine differences in investment preferences between domestic and cross-border investors at a micro level. We address the gap by examining the characteristics of assets acquired by cross border investors in six major US metro areas, comparing them with the purchases made by US investors in those same areas. Our study uses date on more than 67 500 transactions recorded by Real Capital Analytics (RCA) over the period from Q1 2003 to Q3 2016. As well as examining cross-border investors in aggregate, we isolate and examine purchases by investors from each of the four principal source nations for cross-border real estate investment in these cities. This is importance since treating cross-border investors as a single group may obscure important differences between them. We employ multilevel logit techniques and we find across a number of specifications that cross-border investors prefer larger assets, newer assets and CBD locations regardless of nationality. However, temporal and sectoral patterns of investment, as well as evidence for return chasing behavior, vary with the nationality of investors being studied.

Book excerpt: My dissertation investigates issues concerning information asymmetry, imperfect capital markets, and their impact on foreign portfolio investment (FPI) and crossborder mergers and acquisitions (M & As). Chapter 1 studies how investors allocate their portfolio equity investment internationally. I develop a model to formalize the information signaling mechanism of foreign direct investment (FDI): When investors make FDI, due to their control and monitoring as insiders, they obtain the information about the returns on overseas subsidiaries and thereby extract the information about the returns on FPI. The extent to which FDI predicts the returns on FPI is referred to as the informativeness of FDI. I construct measures for the informativeness of FDI and find that FPI is more sensitive to FDI if FDI has a higher degree of informativeness. Chapter 2, coauthored with G. Andrew Karolyi, investigates how imperfect capital markets and exchange rates affect firms' asset sales worldwide. We show that the informational imperfection on the capital markets impacts entrepreneurs' odds to win bids through two channels: First, it decreases the maximum amount of loans that entrepreneurs obtain; second, it reduces the cutoff level of entrepreneurs' initial wealth below which they are credit rationed. We find that the cross-border asset sales between a country pair are negatively correlated with the financial development of the target country, while it is positively associated with that of the acquirer country. The depreciation of the target country currency is associated with a lower increase in the cross-border asset sales for a higher level of financial development of the target country. Chapter 3 explores how firms' heterogeneous characteristics, in particular their competitiveness on the product market and productivity affect their domestic and cross-border corporate asset transactions. I find that firms participate in the domestic and overseas corporate asset markets through endogenous self-selection. Specifically, firms with high competitiveness are more likely to buy assets on the overseas markets, and they are more likely to sell assets on the domestic market. Firms with high productivity are more likely to buy assets on both the domestic and overseas markets, and they are less likely to sell assets on the domestic market.
