Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mystery/Romance: Stacey Christian unexpectedly runs into her ex-boyfriend, Peter Mansfield, while touring Ireland. They join forces to help solve the puzzles surrounding Faoilenn Màrrach, or Gull Castle. Stacy travels to County Mayo -- to Belderrig, a little fishing village on the coast. Peter joins her, and together they confront Peter's formidable great-aunt Katherine O'Flannery, a reclusive woman feared by the locals. Finding herself implacably installed in Aunt Katherine's eerie fortress, Stacey becomes obsessed with the castle's disturbing legends. Peter is put to work in his capacity as banker, sorting out the financial records for his aunt. This leaves Stacey to follow her own leads to solving the mystery of the ghost that walks the halls of Gull Castle. Having to parry the attentions of the castle's handsome but disturbing horse handler, Liam Glenshaw, avoid the dark jealousy of Glenshaw's scorned girlfriend, Margaret, and side-step the frightening old gate-keeper, Jimmy, Stacy soon finds herself in over her head. With help from locals, and especially a young boy named Danny, she uncovers a tangle of intrigue that goes deeper, and into much more dangerous territory, than she'd expected. Faced with murder and betrayal, both Stacy and Peter suddenly find themselves in a predicament that neither could have imagined.
Download or read book Return of the Birds written by Joe Moore and published by The North Pole Press. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Return of the Birds - Terror from the sky! What if I told you all the beautiful birds that we love and feed suddenly changed and began to feed on us?It happened once in a sleepy resort town in Northern California called Bodega Bay. Now more than 55 years later, it begins again. But it is far worse this time. Species of birds including not just crows and sea gulls, but hawks, eagles and vultures have joined the invasion. What caused this? Why is it happening? Tory McKnight, a student of ornithology from UCSD becomes swept up in a nightmare from her beloved birds, and must try to solve the mystery before the whole town gets killed and a nationwide pandemic ensues. This Hitchcock-style suspense thriller was inspired by the movie “The Birds,” and the short story from Daphne du Maurier. Return of the Birds will have you searching the skies, and both scared to read more but unable to put it down. Hurry, enjoy this before they gather again. Look for the sequel Revenge of the Birds Interview with the author: Return of the Birds and Revenge of the Birds are very distinctive from your other books, why did you write them? I was always intrigued by the movie “The Birds” but felt too many questions were left unanswered. It niggled at me all my life, especially every time I watched the movie. I had to write the next chapters to the original story. Do you answer all the questions from the movie “The Birds?” Most of the questions get addressed, but in so doing more questions and concerns arise. There remains a good deal of suspense throughout the book and beyond. It resulted in me writing the sequel, Revenge of the Birds. Why do readers enjoy these books? If they love a classic cliffhanger or good thrillers they enjoy these books. They are longer than the short stories they were inspired by, but then both novels have extra twists and turns that add to the storyline and keep the suspense flowing.
Book Synopsis Gulls of Europe, Asia and North America by : Klaus Malling Olsen
Download or read book Gulls of Europe, Asia and North America written by Klaus Malling Olsen and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-06-30 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eagerly awaited guide offers the most comprehensive treatment ever published on the gulls of Europe, Asia and North America. A total of 43 species is treated, and every species is described in considerable detail, with a full description of each plumage and racial variation. Gulls are intelligent, versatile, opportunistic, and ecological generalists. As such, they exploit a variety of habitats, both coastal and inland, take a wide range of food, and are often extremely abundant. They are also great wanderers, with several American species regularly appearing in Western Europe and vice versa. As well as identification criteria, this book includes an up-to-date assessment of the range and status of every species, together with information on patterns of vagrancy. This important guide is published at a critical time in the development of dull taxonomy. The large, white-headed forms occurring in the region comprise a superspecies complex, with the precise relationships between the various components still under considerable debate. A thorough illustrative and textual treatment of the group is much needed, and this book provided the most complete overview of the complex. The text is complemented not only by superb colour paintings by Hans Larrson, but also by a large selection of colour photographs, sourced from some of the finest bird photographers in the world. This is the essential reference to a fascinating and endlessly challenging group of birds.
Book Synopsis Two Gulls and a Girl by : Roxanne Schinas
Download or read book Two Gulls and a Girl written by Roxanne Schinas and published by Imperator Publishing. This book was released on 2008-12-31 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roxanne Schinas has always had a passion for wildlife. Long before she was old enough to read of Gerald Durrell's adventures she was emulating them, with pets ranging from rabbits and half-tame hedgehogs to toads, sticklebacks, locusts, and a crayfish. In the spring of 2008, while her family were cruising in southern Spain, Roxanne decided to make a survey of the seagull colony on an uninhabited island. The project began with a hand-drawn map on which the nests were plotted. Phase two was to have consisted in the study of the young birds growing up on the island, but when a local nature warden told her that most of the chicks would die, Roxanne found that she had a perfect excuse for "rescuing" two and bringing them home. Mother was not impressed... but the deed was done, and now the young naturalist had the opportunity to study, intimately, the development of Larus Cachinanns, the yellow-legged gull. Two Gulls and a Girl is Roxanne's record of events in the seagull colony and amongst her two hand-reared birds. Contains 92 black-and-white photos and illustrations. Foreword by Richard Williamson.

Book Synopsis The Gull Next Door by : Marianne Taylor
Download or read book The Gull Next Door written by Marianne Taylor and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A uniquely personal meditation on Britain's gulls by one of today's leading wildlife writers From a distance, gulls are beautiful symbols of freedom over the oceanic wilderness. Up close, however, they can be loud, aggressive and even violent. Yet gulls fascinate birdwatchers, and seafarers regard them with respect and affection. The Gull Next Door explores the natural history of gulls and their complicated relationship with humans. Marianne Taylor grew up in an English seaside town where gulls are ever present. Today, she is a passionate advocate for these underappreciated birds. In this book, Taylor looks at the different gull species and sheds light on all aspects of the lives of gulls—how they find food, raise families, socialize and migrate across sea, coastland and countryside. She discusses the herring gull, Britain's best-known and most persecuted gull species, whose numbers are declining at an alarming rate. She looks at gulls in legend, fiction and popular culture, and explains what we can do to protect gull populations around the world. The Gull Next Door reveals deeper truths about these remarkable birds. They are thinkers and innovators, devoted partners and parents. They lead long lives and often indulge their powerful drive to explore and travel. But for all these natural gifts, many gull species are struggling to survive in the wild places they naturally inhabit, which is why they are now exploiting the opportunities of human habitats. This book shows how we might live more harmoniously with these majestic yet misunderstood birds.

Download or read book Gulls and Plovers written by C.J. Barnard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early years of this century a Scottish doctor speculated on the evolutionary origin of human tears. It seemed to him that with the increase in brain size and cognitive powers of our early ancestors many events in the struggle for existence would be just too distressing to observe. How comforting then, for the mother, distraught by the sight of her child being devoured by a lion, to cloud her vision with a flood of tears! Just so, though if the good doctor had pondered further, the following picture might have occurred to him, comfortable in his speculative armchair, and given him some pause for thought. ' ~ . . . . ~ . . ~ ~ . . •. . u" . . , ~- . ' _ . . . . . . . vii viii SERIES EDITOR'S FOREWORD These stories do not, of course, get us very far in understanding the evolution of tears or anything else, but they do remind us how far the study of behavioural adaptation has come this century. This is, in fact, an exciting time for students of behaviour. The last twenty years have seen a great advance in the theoretical armoury for tackling questions of behavioural evolution and adaptation, and a parallel expansion in empirical studies, particularly in the field. The concepts of inclusive fitness and the evolutionarily stable strategy, for example, have helped to explain major features of social behaviour and have generated entirely new questions and predictions for the field worker to examine.
