Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of Americans are finding themselves on their own as they head toward retirement. Some are solo by circumstances, others by choice. Baby Boomers all of them, they are driving new trends in housing, work, caretaking and traveling, while also redefining what it means to be part of a community. These partner-less pioneers are rewriting the book on retirement as they learn what it takes to successfully retire solo and remain happy, healthy and independent in the coming years. Being solo is no longer just a stop on the way to a happy ending. For an increasing number of people, it's a lifestyle choice and the destination. Solo is a natural, dynamic state that we experience as we cycle in and out of life stages, living arrangements and relationships. The new reality is that most of us will spend more time solo than in a married or committed relationship over the course of our lifetime. And: It is almost certain that we will be solo during the later years of our lives. Nearly 10,000 Baby Boomers turn 65 every day - a reality that began in 2010 and is expected to continue through 2029. Few feel financially prepared for retirement. Those who are married are likely counting on a spouse's income to help save for retirement and to provide a second Social Security check in the future. Statistics, however, indicate that most married Boomers are destined to become solo again, whether through death or divorce. In short, there are no guarantees in life, whether you are solo, married or somewhere in between. It is likely that you will have to continue working, start a business or come up with another source of income to supplement whatever Social Security benefits you may earn. Have you thought about how you will spend your time in retirement, how or where you may want to live, how you will stay active and healthy in the years ahead, or who will be there for you as you grow older? You should. It's never too late, or too soon, to develop a plan to protect your independence and make sure that your coming years are happy, healthy and brightened by a sense of community. Retiring Solo will show you how to begin. --------------- Author Lori Martinek is a successful serial entrepreneur and an advisor and mentor to business owners. As a small business owner for nearly 30 years, Lori knew that she needed a plan to secure her future and protect her independence as she grew older. As a vibrant single woman with a passion for outdoor activities and social causes, Lori also wanted to protect her health and her mobility, stay active and engaged in the world around her, create a sense of community that would provide social opportunities and support, and find a way to 'live alone, but together' with other active adults. Her journey to create her personal retirement rebalancing plan also produced this book.

In Essential Retirement Planning for Solo Agers, certified retirement coach Sara Zeff Geber coins the term “Solo Ager” to refer to the segment of society that either does not have adult children or is single and believes they will be on their own as they grow older. This book explores the path ahead for this group. That includes choices in housing, relationships, legal arrangements, finances, and more. Geber reviews the role of adult children in an aging parent’s world and suggests ways in which Solo Agers can mitigate the absence of adult children by relationship building and rigorous planning for their future. Geber shares her expertise on what constitutes a fulfilling older life and how Solo Agers can maximize their opportunities for financial security, physical health, meaning and purpose in the second half of life, and, finally, planning for the end game. Through real-life stories and anecdotes, the author explores housing choices, relationships, and building a support system. You will learn about: · different levels of care and independence in various types of living arrangements · how to initiate discussions among friends and relatives about end-of-life treatment · “what if” scenarios · who to talk to about legal and financial decisions And it’s not just the Solo Ager that can learn from this book. Financial advisors, elder law and estate attorneys, senior care managers, and others whose clientele is on the far side of sixty will benefit as well.

Book excerpt: Contrary to simplistic portrayals of either blissful relaxation or bewildered depression, adjusting to retirement is every bit as complex and ambiguous as life's other transitions. In Launching Solo, six retirees describe what actually happened during their initial months out of the workforce: what went smoothly, what proved bumpy, and what they came to either desire or fear. Sometimes, their reactions took them by surprise, while other developments unfolded much as they had expected. These informal conversations with ordinary people are supplemented with brief mention of key research findings. By focusing on the stories of single people, the complications of getting along with one's partner are set aside to highlight the types of pleasures and personal challenges that retirement brings-challenges that arise regardless of marital status. The good news is that most people like being retired, but their contentment may not emerge instantly or automatically. Launching Solo is a pleasant, yet thought-provoking, read for everybody leaving paid employment to embark on a new way of living....

Book excerpt: In his previous book, Solo Lawyer by Design: A Plan for Success in Any Practice (2017), author Gary P. Bauer helped law students and recent graduates develop a realistic business plan to enter the practice of law. In Hire and Retire, the second book in his "Solo Lawyer" series for the ABA's Solo, Small Firm and General Practice (GPSolo) Division, Bauer covers the back end of practice for senior attorneys seeking a successful exit strategy. Hire and Retire brings together new attorneys or recent graduates and those in the practice of law who are approaching retirement. Many older lawyers have no plan in place in case of their untimely death or disability, despite their ethical obligations to their clients. Thus, more and more state bar associations are being called on to close out the practices of solo practitioners who have made no provisions. Receivers appointed by bar associations may take years to find all the information they need to close things out. Other lawyers who don't "die at their desks" end up leaving money on the table, slowly reducing their practices instead of transferring work to others. Hiring on a new associate means a continued stream of income as the senior attorney cuts back. You have spent decades developing your practice and making it successful. With the proper planning and direction that Hire and Retire offers, you can convert what you've built into a revenue stream that can be enjoyed as you move into retirement. Leave your family an asset, not a liability.

Book excerpt: If you've ever dreamed of casting off your worldly possessions and traveling to your heart's content, this story about two intrepid seniors will inspire you no matter your age. Michael and Debbie Campbell felt they had one more adventure in them before considering retirement in the traditional sense, so they filled two rolling duffel bags with life's essentials (including their own pillows) and hit the road. Three years later, having sold their home in Seattle, their "Senior Nomad" lifestyle has no end in sight. Ride along as they share tales of living full-time in Airbnbs in over 50 countries and pay tribute to the many hosts who not only helped them live daily life, but also offered unique opportunities to experience their cities. From the barber's chair in Dublin and the dentist's chair in Split, to a wild motorcycle ride in Athens, a peek behind the Soviet Curtain in Transnistria, and the demise of a chicken for dinner in Marrakech, hosts made the Campbell's dream of adventure come true. Discover how Debbie and Michael find their next Airbnb, how they get there, and the many ways they enjoy their new city just as the locals do. Learn their tips and tricks for using Airbnb and how they get the most out of each stay, all while spending little more than they would have spent settled into their rocking chairs in Seattle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A guide for planning that rich season of life, based not just on money, but also on how to create meaningful relationships, memories, and legacy.” —Dan Miller, author of 48 Days to the Work You Love Rock Retirement offers inspirational advice on how to enjoy the journey to retirement to its fullest. Traditional retirement advice usually boils down to saving more, sacrificing more, and settling for less. This approach makes people dependent on systems outside their control, such as the market, economy, and investment returns. The result: people lose power over determining their life. What sets Rock Retirement apart is its holistic approach to helping people take back control and act intentionally towards the life they want. It addresses the fears, hopes, and dreams that people have about retirement, goes way beyond the numbers, and shows them how to balance living well today and tomorrow. “Too many books think retirement is just about finances. Instead, retirement is about looking at life in full and working out what it is you want to do and then turning to finances to make it happen. That’s exactly the focus of the practical and helpful guide.” —Andrew Scott, coauthor of The 100-Year Life “Roger Whitney lays out a plan for today’s modern retiree. If you are exhausted with being fed that retirement is the end game of life, then Roger’s book is a must-read!” —Darryl W. Lyons, author of 18 to 80 “If you’re dreaming of a retirement free of worry, chao and confusion, Rock Retirement will give you the clarity, a solid plan and fresh inspiration to help you get where you want to go.” —Jevonnah “Lady J” Ellison, author of Love Letters for Leading Ladies

Book excerpt: America’s #1 retirement adviser offers tried and true investment strategies for before and after retirement. Sound guidance from the creator of RetirementWatch.com and the author of Where’s My Money?: Secrets to Getting the Most Out of Your Social Security. The 2020s are likely to be among the worst times to be nearing retirement or in the early years of retirement. The book first explains the forces that are coming together to make it more difficult to create and maintain financial security and independence in retirement. The middle of the Baby Boomer generation will increase the pressure on every aspect of retirement. The early boomers began reaching 65 in 2011. Since then about 10,000 Boomers per day have been hitting 65. But the middle section of the Boomers is larger than the early Boomers. Beginning in 2024, an estimated 12,000 Baby Boomers will turn 65 each day. Already the foundations of retirement, Social Security and Medicare, are under stress. The rapid increase in the number of Boomers enrolling in these systems will increase the strain. In addition, the high returns in stocks and other investments since 2009 (and especially since 2017) make it likely that investment returns will be below their long-term averages during most of the 2020s. Further, interest rates on traditional retirement income investments, such as certificates of deposit, short-term government bonds, and money market funds, are the lowest they’ve been in U.S. history and are likely to remain below their historic averages. In addition, taxes imposed by all levels of government are likely to increase during the 2020s. A longstanding myth is that a person’s tax burden will decline in retirement. That hasn’t been true for some time, and in the 2020s retirees are likely to face a range of tax increases. For a long time, many retirees left a lot of money on the table by making less-than-optimum decisions about Social Security, Medicare, IRAs, 401(k) rollovers, long-term care, and other key retirement issues. For example, a recent study done for United Income concluded that only four percent of Social Security beneficiaries made the optimum decision about when to claim retirement benefits. For the most part, the Boomers mistakes were bailed out by high stock market returns and low inflation. Retirees in the 2020s aren’t likely to be so fortunate. Peak Boomers have to make the right decisions about all aspects of their retirement finances. This book will cover each of the key retirement planning issues faced in the five years before retirement and the first five years of retirement and guide readers to making the right decisions for them.
