Book excerpt: "This report reviews what is known about forgetting as it applies to military tasks. It includes research conducted by the Army Research Institute as well as related work performed by the Air Force and Navy and leading academic institutions. The report distinguishes the memory for knowledge and skill related to procedural tasks, cognitive tasks, and perceptual-motor tasks. Memory for task knowledge has been demonstrated to be quite good. Memory for cognitive skills has been demonstrated to be quite good. Memory for psychomotor skills varies, depending on whether the task is continuous, such as riding a bicycle, or discrete, such as executing the separate performance steps involved in disassembling a rifle. Throughout the report, figures depict the relative sustainment or decay of a skill as reported in the research literature. A final section concerns the factors that influence the reacquisition of a skill after extended periods of nonuse, as might occur during a mobilization."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: Performance data were collected in the three general Basic Combat Training proficiency areas (rifle marksmanship, physical combat fitness, end-of-cycle tests) from independent groups of soldiers (60 per group) during BCT, during Advanced Individual Training (AIT) and Combat Support Training (CST), and for permanent-party personnel in the Army six to 12 months. These data were collected at three U.S. Army Training Centers under comparable conditions. Results on the three areas tested indicated a general performance decrement over the one-year period sampled. While these performance decrements were statistically significant, the percentage decrements from the BCT level were relatively small and their practical significance is open to question. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a project designed to develop and validate a convenient, practical method that individual unit commanders and training managers can use when deciding how to allocate training resources in order to maximize combat readiness. Previous project accomplishments are briefly reviewed, and activities associated with the second year of effort are described in detail. These Year 2 activities include: 1) A field experiment of acquisition and retention performance of Infantry tasks, using soldiers in MOS 11B. One hundred sixty-five (165) soldiers were trained on 27 tasks and tested for recall at two-month intervals. Also, the effects of overtraining, previous testing, and soldier abilities (i.e., AFQT and ASVAB composite scores) were examined. 2) The development of a User's Decision Aid, which used ratings of task characteristics to estimate retention functions for each task. 3) The assessment of the relationship between the predicted and empirically obtained retention functions. Results indicated that it was possible to estimate soldiers' proficiency accurately over time, using the User's Decision Aid ratings. Also, the field experiment demonstrated that, for many tasks, retention could be improved by overtraining. Soldier abilities were not systematically related to performance. (Author).

Book excerpt: This study sought to obtain data on how well, at the end of each stage of training, the typical infantryman knows the essential combat skills, and on how much of each skill he retains at various intervals after basic combat training. A performance test, composed of subtests in 17 combat skills, was given to approximately 4500 active duty personnel; aptitude area scores were also collected on each man. Among the findings were: (1) In general, level of skill increased with length of service despite the fact that the average aptitude level of the men tested was lower at each successive training stage; (2) Failure of the trainees at every training level to pass more than 70% of the basic combat skills indicates the gap between goals specified by Army Training Program and Infantry experts and average trainee performance; and (3) Retention level was high for all subjects except: Range Estimation, Tactics, Signal Communications, Mine Warfare, Rocket Launcher, ML Rifle Skills, and First Aid. The fact that some combat skills are being learned more effectively at one post and some at another suggests that wider adoption of the most effective techniques might result in greater over-all achievement.

Book excerpt: This book examines the human factors issues associated with the development, testing, and implementation of helmet-mounted display technology in the 21st Century Land Warrior System. Because the framework of analysis is soldier performance with the system in the full range of environments and missions, the book discusses both the military context and the characteristics of the infantry soldiers who will use the system. The major issues covered include the positive and negative effects of such a display on the local and global situation awareness of the individual soldier, an analysis of the visual and psychomotor factors associated with each design feature, design considerations for auditory displays, and physical sources of stress and the implications of the display for affecting the soldier's workload. The book proposes an innovative approach to research and testing based on a three-stage strategy that begins in the laboratory, moves to controlled field studies, and culminates in operational testing.

A soldier will experience confusing and often terrifying sights, sounds, smells, and dangers—and he must learn to survive and win despite them. This field manual, containing the essential combat skills the U.S. Army teaches its soldiers, is the Army’s most recent edition, which has been completely updated for Lyons Press by the soldier who wrote the manual for the army: Sergeant First Class Matt Larsen. Distributed to all soldiers, this is the must-have guide for those who want to know how U.S. Army soldiers are trained to prepare for--and perform during--combat. It includes photos, illustrations, and diagrams throughout depicting weaponry, combat maneuvers, warrior drills, survival techniques, fighting positions, camouflage, and basic field medicine.
