The participants consisted of 22 female certified athletic trainers employed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III setting. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with the participants from March to May 2008, and interviews were analyzed with the use of open and axial coding. The findings were organized into three major themes: (a) a need for balance between professional and personal lives, (b) working in a male-dominated profession, and (c) relationships with other female athletic trainers. Results also included trainers' general satisfaction with the Division III level of opportunity, and mixed desires and barriers to working at a higher level in colleges or at the professional level.

Book excerpt: Despite representing half of all certified athletic trainers in the United States, females tend to not staff male teams at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level. To date, there has not been much research on female athletic trainers (ATs), especially in positions such as head athletic trainer of a Division I school or at the professional level. Rather, the few studies that have been conducted have focused on the work-life conflict female ATs face and its relationship to higher attrition rates from the profession. The current study extended the examination of female ATs by exploring the experiences of female athletic trainers who currently staff or have previously staffed (within the past 5 years) male Division I teams through the lens of hegemonic masculinity. Findings suggest that gender stereotypes and sex roles, various levels and types of support, and mentors/role models influenced participant experiences. These findings suggest possible causes of higher attrition rates for women than men in the athletic training field besides work-family conflict and suggest a new avenue of research to be explored further.

Unfortunately this representation does not carry over into positions of high rank. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the lived experiences of female head athletic trainers in NCAA Division I IA football institutions to focus on the issues of barriers to advancement and their ability to overcome them. Using Hakims preference theory as a lens, this interpretive qualitative investigation utilized semi structured open ended interviews to learn how participants advanced in the field of athletic training to the position of head athletic trainer. The study identified family division of labor and the discrimination from the old boys club found in other studies. However it also showed low aspiration as equally strong a barrier to advancement and demonstrated how low aspiration then affects the intentionality of ones career path. The participants identified three reasons for their low aspiration. First an aversion to working in football a traditional role for many head athletic trainers second an overall dislike of the duties of head athletic trainer and third a stated reluctance to be in a leadership position. Unique to this study was the identification of personal attributes which balanced the barriers and aided the women in the advancement. All expressed a strong work ethic they received and internalized encouragement from others and finally they saw a challenge and an opportunity for personal and professional growth in the head athletic trainer position. In most cases, they began to see the position as something other than traditional, and one they could change and improve. This revisioning of the position played an integral part in their willingness to advance. Missing from the support these athletic training leaders identified was active professional mentoring. They did not benefit from formal or informal career advancement advice from supervisors or peers. With low aspirations, low intentionality, and no career mentoring, these female head athletic trainers highlight the strong need for active preparation for advancement in the profession for both men and women.

Book excerpt: "The National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) has experienced a decline in membership in recent years generating much debate about the professional commitment of a new generation of athletic trainers. The purpose of this study therefore was to compare the contributing factors of job satisfaction and intention to leave athletic training in Certified Athletic Trainers (ATs) employed in NCAA Division I, II, and III institutions. A web-based questionnaire was utilized to examine both job satisfaction and intention to leave the profession of athletic training. The Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) consisted of 36 items based on a 6-point Likert scale. The JSS produced 8 subscales of job satisfaction which were used for all data analysis. The Intention to Leave Survey (ITLS) was an original instrument consisting of 7 items. A 4-point Likert scale was designed to determine a respondent's intent to leave and to what degree they have actively pursued such intentions. All NATA certified members in district 3 employed in a college or university job setting were solicited via e-mail for participation in the study. In addition, 60 ATs from each of the remaining nine NATA districts who met the inclusion criteria were also solicited. There was a follow-up solicitation after two weeks for a total of two solicitations over a three week data collection period. Only respondents that were employed in clinical or dual appointment were included in the data analysis. 191 ATs completed all sections of the survey. The subjects represented NCAA division I (n=106, 55.5%), division II (n=37, 19.4%), and division III (n=48, 25.1%). In addition, subjects were also divided by job title into head athletic trainer (n=63, 33.0%), assistant/associate athletic trainer (n=103, 53.9%), and graduate assistant/intern athletic trainer (n=25, 13.1%). Separate factorial ANOVAs compared the mean scores of each of the 8 JSS subscales by NCAA division and job title. A factorial ANOVA was also used to compare the mean scores of the ITLS and NCAA division and job title. A step-wise multiple regression was used to determine the strength of the relationships between the 8 JSS subscales and the total ITLS score. The alpha level was set at .05. The factorial ANOVAs revealed significant differences for job title in the JSS subscales of fringe benefits (p= .001) and operating conditions (p=.000). Significance was also seen in the interaction between NCAA division and job title in the JSS subscale of nature of work (p= .043). The multiple regression revealed the JSS subscales of nature of work (r= -.45), pay/rewards (r= -.43), and promotion (r= -.41) were the most significant indicators of intention to leave. The results of this study suggest there is a strong negative correlation between various facets job satisfaction and intent to leave the profession of athletic training. NCAA division seems to have no impact on an individual's job satisfaction or intention to leave the profession. In addition, only fringe benefits and operating conditions seem to be affected by job title. These results suggest that ATs have similar levels of job satisfaction regardless of NCAA division and their job title is not a major factor in job satisfaction."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: This study sought to determine what factors influenced the decision making processes of college football coaches when over-signing a recruiting class or their returning roster. The NCAA Bylaws limit Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) football programs to a total number of scholarships to 85 "counters" annually including 25 scholarships for "initial counters." Over-signing is the term used to describe the practice of college programs signing prospective collegiate athletes to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) that may exceed the maximum number of athletic scholarships permitted by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), or when a team brings in a recruiting class that pushes the team's amount of counters past 85 scholarships. This action results in that coaching staff taking a scholarship away from a returning player or later informing an incoming freshman that the school is not able to honor its commitment and provide him with a scholarship. Sport media writers have commented that there are many reasons/concerns for which a coach might over-sign a class such as the fact that recruits often sign a NLI and then do not qualify academically, indecisive recruits, general attrition, and that football has a high transfer rate amongst its athletes (Bachman, 2011; Doyel, 2010; Feldman, 2007; Gordon, 2011; Johnson, 2011; Machen, 2011; Towers, 2011; Whiteside; 2011). Any of these occurrences could leave a coach with a shortage of athletes, but by signing extra prospects a coach can avoid being left short/devoid of talent. Although these ideas have been written about they have not been examined through an empirical study. This study used 19 interviews with college football coaches and personnel staff to determine that over-signing occurs because of general attrition, fickle recruits, it is seen as an accepted practice, teams can gain a competitive edge, and that coaches feel pressured to win consistently.

Book excerpt: Little to no research has been conducted examining the factors contributing to athletic department competitive success in NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics. Several studies have linked student-athlete institutional choice factors to academic factors, while Division III student-athletes have indicated that both athletic and academic programs are important in their college choice (Goss, Jubenville, & Oregan, 2006; Konnert & Giese, 1987; National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2008; National Collegiate Athletic Association Research, 2011; National Collegiate Athletic Association Research, 2016). The NCAA Division III philosophy states that student-athletes should be integrated into the whole of the institution, not treated differently than non-student-athletes, and that admissions standards should be the same for student-athletes as they are for non-student-athletes (Stubbeman & Cooper, 2015). This research examined the relationship between institutional academic profile and athletic department competitive success. Academic profile was measured through institutional selectivity (acceptance rates), caliber of incoming students (ACT/SAT scores), four-year graduation rates, and retention rates (first to second year of enrollment). Athletic department competitive success was measured by the institution's placement in the Learfield Sports Directors Cup (LSDC). Spearman rank correlation was used to examine each independent variable against the institution's points earned in the LSDC. Positive relationships were found between each independent variable and points earned in the LSDC - ranging from -.306 to .563. These positive relationships present various implications and considerations for institutional administration and coaches to consider in recruiting student-athletes and setting expectations for competitive success.
