Book Synopsis Retail and Commercial Planning (RLE Retailing and Distribution) by : Ross Davies
Download or read book Retail and Commercial Planning (RLE Retailing and Distribution) written by Ross Davies and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in the philosophy of planning and the political influences behind it have led to an increasingly ambivalent approach to retail and commercial matters and a lack of clear goals and objectives as to what both central government and the local authorities should be concerned with. At the same time, changes within the distribution industry have brought new pressures to bear upon the environment which the conventional planning process seems ill-equipped to accommodate. This book, by an established leading authority, takes stock of the new problems to be confronted and provides the rudiments of an alternative planning approach to dealing with them. It begins by examining the growth of office blocks and shopping centres, and goes on to analyse and criticise the existing planning processes, suggesting alternative procedures. It looks at the dual needs of development on the one hand and renovation and redevelopment on the other and discusses how these should be dealt with in the future. More specific problems are also examined: the impact created by new shopping schemes, the decline of small shops and related activities, the conflict over transport demands and provisions and the special physical needs of particular urban and rural environments. Throughout, the argument is supported by detailed examples of particular developments. Originally published 1984.

Book Synopsis Commercial Distribution in Europe (Routledge Revivals) by : John Dawson
Download or read book Commercial Distribution in Europe (Routledge Revivals) written by John Dawson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physical distribution of products is an important element in the marketing operations of all productive enterprises, and in many cases efficient distribution is the most important single factor leading to success. With the emergence of post-industrial society the role of distribution has come to increasingly be viewed as a generator of wealth in the economy, attracting the interest of public policy makers anxious to influence investment, employment and efficiency in the sector. First published in 1982, this book isolates the major trends affecting the main institutions in distribution and contrasts the processes of change amongst the countries and regions of the European Economic Community. Structural change in the industry is related to spatial change in the regions and comparisons made of the varied public policy responses in member countries. An interesting and relevant reissue, this title will be of particular value to economics and business students with an interest in the development of the European consumer and post-industrial Europe.
Book Synopsis Retail Geography (RLE Retailing and Distribution) by : John Dawson
Download or read book Retail Geography (RLE Retailing and Distribution) written by John Dawson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of the organisation and location of retailing activity have played a central role in the emergence of urban geography as a major area of academic study. Moreover, retailing is increasingly the focus of interdisciplinary research, with economists, sociologists, psychologists and marketing specialists all contributing. This book surveys and sets in context the wide range of research work that has recently been done on retailing. It concentrates on western industrial societies, particularly Britain and the USA, and considers empirical research, theory and theoretical applications. Topics covered include location analysis which is a traditional area of academic interest; consumer behaviour, which is of particular interest to psychologists, and retail organisation and government involvement, which will interest all those concerned, especially those actually involved in retail planning and management. This comprehensive book is the first substantial review of research in retail geography and suggests many future lines of research within the field. Originally published 1980.

Download or read book Retailing in the European Union written by Stewart Howe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-12 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As retailing becomes increasingly important in global economics, the similarities and differences of retailing from country to country are now more evident. This unique and timely study of retail structures across Europe, gives an insightful overview of the internationalization of retailing and asks important questions regarding the effectiveness of different retailing sectors. With chapters on Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, this contemporary study examines the extent to which Europe's increasingly homogenous environment applies to retailing. By considering overall structural and socio-economic variables of country-to-country retailing, it draws fascinating conclusions on efficiency and competition within the European Union. A major contribution to the field of European retail studies, this significant work in comparative legislation is essential reading for anyone studying retailing at postgraduate or undergraduate level or with an interest in comparative economics.
Book Synopsis Planning for Retail Development by : Clifford Guy
Download or read book Planning for Retail Development written by Clifford Guy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-10-11 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a leading expert in the field, this is the first thorough critical review of retail planning policy in Britain (including Scotland and Wales). It covers recent changes in government policy and guidance, and examines retail policy within a broader economic and social context. Planning for Retail Development explains key events and debates in the evolution of retail planning policy, at central and local government levels, since the 1960s and draws contrasts between the 1980s, a period in which retail developers were encouraged by central government to expand away from town centres, and the more recent emphasis on protection and promotion of town centres as the most appropriate location for new development. The book develops a critical evaluation of past and present retail planning policies, based upon analyses of retailers’ objectives and of typical consumer shopping behaviour. Relationships between retail planning and wider societal concerns, including sustainable development, social inclusion and urban regeneration are also examined and analysed and guidelines for future policy objectives and content are drawn.
Book Synopsis The Structure of European Industry by : H. W. de Jong
Download or read book The Structure of European Industry written by H. W. de Jong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Structure of European Industry is a collection of essays on the economic organization of industrial sectors in Europe, which may serve either of policy makers in business and in Government; and staff and students at Universities. The first group increasingly needs a focus on the longer-term developments of European industry, now that the positive (growth) effects of the economic integration of the sixties have worn off. Restructuring is the current catch word and nobody can deny the necessity and urgency of the task. But it has become a day-to-day affair and there may be a loss of perspective. The second group is growing up in an international environment and should be equipped accordingly. Many-faceted tasks are involved with serving either depending on the problems which differ according to industries. And here the bewildering complexity of the European industrial scenery strikes. Some of these industries are old fashioned; some are new; some are national in orientation; some have become integrated; some have a competitive structure; some are cartellized or heavily concentrated; some have been interfered with by national Governments, others were free from such policing; etc. Moreover, a number of industries show various combinations of these and other facets at the same time.
