Book excerpt: After Hosea brought Gomer back from slavery, their love for one another grew; it became unfailing love. Although their love for another was resurrected, the townspeople persecuted them and mocked their love for another because of her past. She was stoned many times, but through unfailing love they overcame, and God gave Hosea and Gomer a child. Through forgiveness, faithfulness, and patience, God was able to provide a Resurrected Love.

John chapter 20 shows us what kind of person can receive not just the historical fact about the resurrection but the vision of resurrection as a reality today. “How can we have the revelation of the Lord’s resurrection? There is such a wonderful and mysterious fact as the Lord’s resurrection accomplished in this universe. But how can we know it? How can it be revealed to us? How can we have this vision? Only by loving the Lord and seeking Him.”

Book excerpt: Christ's bodily resurrection is the foundation of Christian faith; at least, it is supposed to be. But how often do we really consider what that means? Living Resurrected Lives explores what it would take for Christians to understand and believe so clearly in resurrection--both Christ's glorification and the promise of our own--that our lives would be radically transformed by that faith right now. We take a daringly integrated approach, balancing careful consideration of sacred Scripture with attention to history, theology, and personal contemplative practice. We offer arguments to re-establish a firm bedrock for belief in the Gospel accounts, suggest a new theological perspective that integrates scientific insights into quantum uncertainty with reflections on the malleable nature of identity, and provide heart-stirring guided meditations for daily practice. We elucidate St. Paul's teachings on the transformation of the body and grapple with age-old conundrums about decaying corpses and the continuity of personal identity: What dies? What lives on? We revisit early Christian intuitions about the sublime qualities of the glorified body and explore how we might cultivate such qualities through our own individual practice. Thus we propose an embodied resurrection mysticism that can permeate every moment of our lives.

Preeminent scholar and theologian Ingolf Dalferth argues for a radical reorientation of Christology for historical, hermeneutical, and theological reasons. He defends an orthodox vision of Christology in the context of a dialogue with modernity, showing why the resurrection, not the incarnation, ought to be the central idea of Christological thinking. His proposal is both pneumatological and Trinitarian, and addresses themes such as soteriology, the doctrine of atonement, and preaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this deeply personal and daring meditation, eminent theologian JŸrgen Moltmann challenges many closely held beliefs about the experience of dying, the nature of death, and the hope of eternal life. Moving deftly between biblical, theological, and existential domains, Moltmann argues that while we know intimately the experience of dying--both our loved ones' dying and, ultimately, our own--death itself is a mystery. Are those who have died in fact dead? If the dead are alive, how or in what respect? When the dead awaken to eternal life, who wakes? Moltmann's interrogations yield surprising and beautiful fruits. The living soul that awakens to eternal life is not a ghost in a machine, but the Lebensgestalt, the shape and story of a life, its human and divine contexts, its "whole." Drawing on themes from his oeuvre's entire arc, Resurrected to Eternal Life testifies to the inner unity of Moltmann's theology: the cross, the Spirit, the kingdom, the end, and the hope that makes the end present here and now. Seasoned readers of Moltmann will find in these pages a capstone of a lifetime of theological exploration, while those new to his complex thought will find a concise and elegant entry point into his voluminous work.

Book excerpt: Pathologies of Love examines the role of medicine in the debate on women, known as the querelle des femmes, in early modern France. Questions concerning women’s physical makeup and its psychological and moral consequences played an integral role in the querelle. This debate on the status of women and their role in society began in the fifteenth century and continued through the sixteenth and, as many critics would say, well beyond. In querelle works early modern medicine, women’s sexual difference, literary reception, and gendered language often merge. Literary authors perpetuated medical ideas such as the notion of allegedly fatal lovesickness, and physicians published works that included disquisitions on the moral nature of women. In Pathologies of Love, Judy Kem looks at the writings of Christine de Pizan, Jean Molinet, Symphorien Champier, Jean Lemaire de Belges, and Marguerite de Navarre, examining the role of received medical ideas in the querelle des femmes. She reconstructs how these authors interpreted the traditional courtly understanding of women’s pity or mercy on a dying lover, their understanding of contemporary debates about women’s supposed sexual insatiability and its biological effects on men’s lives and fertility, and how erotomania or erotic melancholy was understood as a fatal illness. While the two women who frame this study defended women and based much of what they wrote on personal experience, the three men appealed to male authority and tradition in their writings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Resurrected Ones A story of an ancient community of saints who crossed the bridge of death twice... The account you are about to read, is a story of the great providences of God. "Providence" is an interesting word. According to the Oxford University Dictionary, it means "The protective care of God." This is a story that concerns aspects of God's divine resources and of His protective care. Remember, God's resources are limitless, so anything is possible! The Scriptures tell us that there were certain saints who were resurrected from their graves, following the crucifixion of Christ. Is this strange or what? To say the least, this is a very unique and unusual event! There is nothing else like it, anywhere in the Scriptures. No specific explanations are given. The Bible says MANY came forth from their graves and were recognized by their friends when they returned to Jerusalem. What could be the reason many saints were brought forth from their graves? What could be the role and purpose of these special RESURRECTED ONES, in the Kingdom of God? After all, they have been amongst us now for over 2,000 years! There must be a reason why they are here. I have thought about this for some time now. Here is what I have concluded. First, I believe their role has been that of witnesses. "Ye shall be My witnesses." Second, I believe their role has been to provide providential care. Hopefully, this narrative will expand your concepts of the greatness of the divine resources that our gracious Creator uses, to bring about His plans and purposes in this man-made world of chaos and confusion. To say the least, I think your imagination will be challenged as you read the adventures of The Resurrected Ones!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the church emerges from the impact of COVID, how will it reimagine its mission? With all the disruption COVID caused comes an opportunity for congregations. How will the local church organize itself, engage with the neighborhood and world, and offer pastoral care to a planet dealing with the significant issues heightened during COVID? Returning to old patterns of behavior is a wasted chance. A theological opportunity for the church lies in rediscovering the classical aim of leisure. The early church during the first two centuries offers us an understanding of leisure quite unique from the dominant expressions of leisure, such as Greek schole, Roman otium, and the Jewish Sabbath. By exploring early Christian practices, we can find insights about leisure for mission today. These practices include setting aside a single day of the week to worship, sharing in a common meal open to all, and, following the meal, incorporating into nonwork time care and engagement in the health and vitality of the community in the name of Jesus Christ. The followers of Jesus were consistent, if extraordinary, in meeting weekly, on the Lord’s Day, to worship, eat together, and go out into the neighborhood to live out their faith.

Knowing Salvation, opens with a discussion of the Anscombe-Lewis debate (the theological issues relating to revelation and reason, Christ the Logos). This leads into Lewis on the Church (the body of Christ) and his understanding of religion: how is salvation enacted through the churches, how do we know we are saved? This concludes with, for Lewis, the question of sufferance and atonement, substitution and election, deliverance and redemption: heaven, hell, resurrection, and eternity--Christ's work of salvation on the cross. What did Lewis say of humanity in relation to God, now Immanuel, God with us, incarnate, crucified, resurrected, and ascended for humanity? What of Lewis's own death, and that of his wife? What does this tell us about the triune God of Love, who is Love? This volume forms the second part of the third book in a series of studies on the theology of C. S. Lewis titled C. S. Lewis: Revelation and the Christ. The books are written for academics and students, but also, crucially, for those people, ordinary Christians, without a theology degree who enjoy and gain sustenance from reading Lewis's work. www.cslewisandthechrist.net

Book excerpt: This book's drama has Jesus saying: "But if someone desires the living Word of God and His power to enter them powerfully, they should never defile their body or their spirit; for their body shall become the temple of the Spirit of the Ages and their spirit shall then become the place of the temple of God. Purify, therefore, the temple, that the Lord of the Temple may dwell therein peacefully and occupy a place that is worthy of Him. Know as well that darkness is ignorance just as knowledge is light. Be then a pursuer of Truth and avoid falseness. Be therefore inquisitive, while always searching for the Highest Truth and never close your minds to any upright words, ideas, and customs. Only then shall any lover of God truly come to see that a dark night of an enlightened soul causes prosperity to leave the hardened hearts of anyone who doubts that rebellion is like the sin of witchcraft. Comprehend therefore that the lack of knowledge brings forth more evil than all of Satan's demons working together for their most vile causes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, a festschrift for Professor A, H. Diverres, has been included in the Arthurian Studies series because it contains highly important new work on the medieval aspects of Arthurian legend, ranging from Rachel Bromwich's essay on the Celtic elements in Arthurian romance and A.O.H Jarman's study of Arthurian allusions in the Black Book of Carmarthen to examinations of the Spanish and French romances of the 15th century. There are five papers on the romances of Chretien de Troyes, including pieces by Tony Hunt, Kenneth Varty and Charles Foulon, two on Welsh and German romances associated with Chretien's work, while other studies are on the Breton lais and on the English romances. In all, this is a wide-ranging and valuable collection, and a welcome addition to the series.
