Download or read book The Restless written by Gerty Dambury and published by Feminist Press at CUNY. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lyrical novel, structured like a Creole quadrille, is a rich ethnography bearing witness to police violence in French Guadeloupe. Narrators both living and dead recount the racial and class stratification that led to a protest-turned-massacre. Dambury’s English debut is a vibrant memorial to a largely forgotten atrocity, coinciding with the government’s declassification of documents pertaining to the incident.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Restless Nation, James M. Jasper isolates a narrative that lies very close to the core of the American character. From colonial times to the present day, Americans have always had a deep-rooted belief in the "fresh start"—a belief that still has Americans moving from place to place faster than the citizens of any other nation.
Book Synopsis The Restless Dead by : Cristina Rivera Garza
Download or read book The Restless Dead written by Cristina Rivera Garza and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on comparative readings of contemporary books from Latin America, Spain, and the United States, the essays in this book present a radical critique against strategies of literary appropriation that were once thought of as neutral, and even concomitant, components of the writing process. Debunking the position of the author as the center of analysis, Cristina Rivera Garza argues for the communality—a term used by anthropologist Floriberto Díaz to describe modes of life of Indigenous peoples of Oaxaca based on notions of collaborative labor—permeating all writing processes. Disappropriating is a political operation at the core of projects acknowledging, both at ethical and aesthetic levels, that writers always work with materials that are not their own. Writers borrow from the practitioners of a language, entering in a debt relationship that can only be covered by ushering the text back to the communities from which it grew. In a world rife with violence, where the experiences of many are erased by pillage and extraction, writing among and for the dead is a form of necrowriting that may well become a life-affirming act of decolonization and resistance.

Book excerpt: The Restless City: A Short History of New York from Colonial Times to the Present is a short, lively history of the world’s most exciting and diverse metropolis. It shows how New York’s perpetual struggles for power, wealth, and status exemplify the vigor, creativity, resilience, and influence of the nation’s premier urban center. The updated second edition includes nineteen images and brings the story right up through the mayoral election of 2009. In these pages are the stories of a broad cross-section of people and events that shaped the city, including mayors and moguls, women and workers, and policemen and poets. Joanne Reitano shows how New York has invigorated the American dream by confronting the fundamental economic, political, and social challenges that face every city. Energized by change, enriched by immigrants, and enlivened by provocative leaders, New York City’s restlessness has always been its greatest asset.

Book Synopsis The Restless Quest by : Julian Hartt
Download or read book The Restless Quest written by Julian Hartt and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-10-04 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Restless Quest' is a collection of essays by Julian N. Hartt. These essays came out of Dr. Hartt's teaching and ministerial experiences; most are the results of years of observation and reflection. Throughout them he applies a persistent and coherent position to a variety of theological topics. Dr. Hartt shows us that not all traditional Christian beliefs have been liquidated by secularist presumption or liberal construction. Because of his very lucid writing, it is not necessary to learn first what Barth, Tillich, Bultmann, or their disciples have said. He further illustrates that there are ways of doing theology in the context of American life and the American church that do not perpetuate the myth that all theological styles necessarily derive from Germany or Denmark. Julian N. Hartt writes: God's forgiveness is truly wonderful; he has everlastingly in view the renewal of a human resolution to walk ever in more Godly ways. Practice in this will not bring in the kingdom of God, no matter how inspired and unsparing the practice is. It will help, it will surely help, self and others to learn what that kingdom is all about. For as Christ is our pioneer and our warrant, that kingdom is the prize and joy of all desiring.
