Throughout the Global South, architecture’s academic community has been deeply affected by this regime, how it shapes and influences proto-professionals and by implication architectural processes and outcomes, too. The Routledge Companion to Architectural Pedagogies of the Global South resituates and recenters an array of pedagogic approaches that are either produced or proliferate from the ‘Global South’ while antagonizing the linguistic, epistemological and disciplinary conceits that, under imperialist imperatives, ensured that these pedagogies remained maligned or marginalized. The book maintains that the exclusionary implications of architectural notions of the ‘orders’, the ‘canon’ and the ‘core’ have served to constrain and to calcify its contents and in doing so, imperiled its relevance and impact. In contrast, this companion of pedagogic approaches serves to evidence that architecture’s academic and professional advancement is wholly contingent on its ability to fully engage in an additive and inclusive process whereby the necessary disruptions that occur when marginalized knowledge confronts established knowledge result in a catalytical transformation through which new, co-created knowledge can emerge. Notions of tradition, identity, modernity, vernacularism, post-colonialism, poverty, migration, social and spatial justice, climate apartheid, globalization, ethical standards and international partnerships are key considerations in the context of the Global South. How these issues originate and evolve within architectural schools and curricula and how they act as drivers across all curricula activities are some of the important themes that the contributors interrogate and debate. With more than 30 contributions from 55 authors from diverse regional, racial, ethnic, gender and cultural backgrounds, this companion is structured in four sections that capture, critique and catalog multifarious marginalized pedagogical approaches to provide educators and students with an essential source book of navigational steers, core contestations, propositional tactics and reimagined rubrics. How is architecture - as activity and setting - pedagogical, and how is pedagogy political? More specifically, it investigates how children can be involved in (re)designing their environment as a wide-reaching learning activity that encourages multiple intelligences, in a bid to democratise the city and develop practices of responsible citizenship. // Situated in Mumbai in collaboration with the education NGO Muktangan, my research process uses a series of pedagogic experiments to examine the sociopolitical contexts of a simultaneously global and local city and its potential to house active citizenship practices by children. I use critical pedagogy and co-design to include children in activating what Henri Lefebvre has called their right to the city. Combining Paulo Freire's critical pedagogical praxis and constructivist theory of education, I propose the development of a collective design practice that fuses learning with the city. Children can become active citizens through design and work with local craft as a political design tool. // The Muktangan School aims to enhance the Indian state curriculum with a constructivist-oriented pedagogy, catering for disadvantaged communities. Four yearly series of workshops ran from 2012 to 2017 with the same class of schoolchildren during an incremental, experiential and reflective project to observe, assess and then transform learning environments. Using activities borrowed from architectural practice, the children became involved in the transformation of their school and neighbourhood by designing interventions that act generatively and interrogatively. // Challenging the current disconnect between practice and research in the areas of pedagogy and architecture, this research demonstrates the value of collective design through local craft for the making of a more democratic learning city, aiming to influence communities, architects, educators and policymakers.

Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of one of the Forum Series on Architectural Education, organized by the Architectural Education Association of Turkey (MIMED) on the theme of “Flexibility in Architecture.” At Forum IV, the architectural education platform was cross-examined, new ideas and experiences were shared, and the potentials of “regeneration” were discovered. The notion of flexibility in architectural education is the subject of fresh and vital debate which is based on whether it is achieved by the inner dynamics of architecture, or the external dynamics. However, this debate seems null and void since the dynamics of both sides seem to necessitate flexibility in architectural education at almost the same level. Hence the attitude that the prerequisite for creating flexibility according to the inner dynamics of architecture depends on the protection of architectural education from the coercive effects of external dynamics is no longer a relevant issue. Furthermore, architectural education as a role model in such a debate becomes more important, not only in a monotyping global context, but also in the local social context as well. Herein lies a fundamental dichotomy arising from the fact that because of globalization curricula may face the risk of becoming uniform. Any effort to overcome this dichotomy in such a debate seems vital. Then, the question arises whether such a dichotomy, which turns architectural education from an autonomous discipline into a quasi-autonomous one, transforms architectural education into a rather political issue. If the autonomous nature of architectural education resists globalization, the question of the manner in which this resistance occurs and what impact it will have on architectural education seems of the utmost importance.
