Although such thought experiments are often used by philosophers to illustrate significant features of moral responsibility, little attention has been paid to ways in which various details make a difference. In Manipulated Agents, Mele addresses this gap, arguing that such vignettes have the potential to unlock an understanding of moral responsibility that takes an agent's history into account when assigning moral praise or blame. In his analysis of these thought experiments, Mele presents a highly accessible, compelling defense of a "history-sensitive" conception of moral responsibility that has implications for free will.

Book excerpt: Abstract: In my dissertation, I defend compatibilism against the problem presented by manipulated agents. I argue that compatibilists about moral responsibility and determinism should claim that people whose attitudes are manipulated by outside interveners are nonetheless fully morally responsible for what they do, so long as such people satisfy compatibilist conditions on being morally responsible. To show this, I demonstrate that our practice of holding each other morally responsible has two distinct components, one emotional, the other non-emotional. The emotional component consists of a class of reactive emotions that are made appropriate by the actions and attitudes of other people. The non-emotional component concerns the way our trust of others is properly impacted by their actions and attitudes. I develop a full account of both the emotional and non-emotional components of holding each other morally responsible, and I also go on to characterize the circumstances under which our emotional and non-emotional attitudes towards others and their actions are appropriately modified. I then apply this framework to cases of manipulated people and show that when the people in question satisfy compatibilist accounts of free agency, their manipulation should not impact our willingness to hold them responsible. Finally, I show that, within certain limits, people who commit crimes because they have been manipulated in this way may be permissibly punished. The ultimate payoff is threefold: a more nuanced understanding of the situations in which people are legitimately held morally responsible for what they do, the development of a compatibilist account of moral responsibility that is immune to many of the canonical objections, and a novel theory of punishment.

Some philosophers seek to benefit from these considerations in arguing against compatibilism, the thesis that moral responsibility is compatible with the truth of determinism. Usually we get a case of some agent in a deterministic universe who, through the workings of some nefarious manipulator, has had many of his desires, values, or pro-attitudes erased and replaced by alien ones which then lead him to perform some action. The premises of the argument claim that 1) this agent is not responsible for his action, and 2) with regards to moral responsibility, there is no relevant difference between the manipulated agent and a standard agent in a deterministic universe.

According to compatibilists, it is possible for an agent to be determined in all her choices and actions and still be free. Incompatibilists, on the other hand, think that the existence of free will is incompatible with the truth of determinism. There are two dominant general conceptions of the nature of free will. According to the first of these, free will is primarily a function of being able to do otherwise than one in fact does. On this view, free will centrally depends upon alternative possibilities. The second approach focuses instead on issues of sourcehood, holding that free will is primarily a function of an agent being the source of her actions in a particular way. This book demarcates these two different conceptions free will, explores the relationship between them, and examines how they relate to the debate between compatibilists and incompatibilists. It ultimately argues for a version of Source Incompatibilism.

The collection exhibits the overall structure of Fischer's view and shows how the various elements fit together to form a comprehensive framework for analyzing free will and moral responsibility. The topics include deliberation and practical reasoning, freedom of the will, freedom of action, various notions of control, and moral accountability. The essays seek to provide a foundation for our practices of holding each other (and ourselves) morally and legally accountable for our behavior. A crucial move is the distinction between two kinds of control. According to Fischer, "regulative control" involves freedom to choose and do otherwise ("alternative possibilities"), whereas "guidance control" does not. Fischer contends that guidance control is all the freedom we need to be morally responsible agents. Further, he contends that such control is fully compatible with causal determinism. Additionally, Fischer argues that we do not need genuine access to alternative possibilities in order for there to be a legitimate point to practical reasoning. Fischer's overall framework contains an argument for the contention that guidance control, and not regulative control, is associated with moral responsibility, a sketch of a comprehensive theory of moral responsibility (that ties together responsibility for actions, omissions, consequences, and character), and an account of the value of moral responsibility. On this account, the value of exhibiting freedom (of the relevant sort) and thus being morally responsible for one's behavior is a species of the value of artistic self-expression.

This argument relies on two plausible principles: a manipulation principle that holds that manipulation precludes free will and moral responsibility, and a 'no difference principle' that holds that manipulation is relevantly similar to determinism. To respond to this argument, the compatibilist must reject either the manipulation principle or the 'no difference principle.' I argue that rejecting the manipulation principle offers the compatibilist the most compelling response to the manipulation argument. Incompatibilists claim that this strategy is implausible because it requires that some victims of manipulation are free and responsible. I aim to show that this consequence is not as implausible as it might initially appear.
