Book excerpt: Recent events including deliberate terrorist attacks and accidental explosions have highlighted the need for comprehensive research in the area of structural response to blast loading. Research in this area has recently received significant attention by the civil engineering community. Reinforced Concrete (RC) water reservoir tanks are an integral part of the critical infrastructure network of urban centers and are vulnerable to blast loading. However, there is a lack of research and knowledge on the performance of RC reservoir walls under blast loading. The objective of this research study is to experimentally investigate the performance of reinforced concrete reservoir walls subjected to blast loading and to analyze the structural response. This study provides experimental test data on the performance of reinforced concrete reservoir walls under blast loading and complementary analytical predictions using the Singe-Degree-Of-Freedom (SDOF) analysis method. The reservoir walls in this study were designed according to the water volume capacity using the Portland Cement Association (PCA 1993) methodology. The design was validated using software SAP 2000. The experimental program involved the construction and simulated blast testing of two RC reservoir wall specimens with different support conditions: (1) two opposite lateral edges fixed, bottom edge pinned and top edge free; and (2) two opposite lateral edges fixed, and bottom and top edges free. The first boundary condition was intended to promote two-way bending action, while the second was dominated by one-way bending. The two specimens were each subjected to a total of six consecutive incrementally increasing blast tests. The experimental program was conducted in the shock tube testing facility that is housed in the University of Ottawa. Wall displacements, reinforcement strains, and reflected pressures and impulses were measured during testing. Analytical calculations were conducted using the equivalent SDOF method to simulate the dynamic response of the RC reservoir wall specimens under different blast loadings. Published tables, charts and coefficients contained in Biggs (1964) and UFC 3-340-02 (2008) were adopted in the equivalent SDOF calculations. The analytical results were compared against the ii experimental data. The SDOF method predicted smaller displacements than those recorded during testing. The approximate nature of the parameters and tables used in the equivalent SDOF calculations contributed to the discrepancy between the analytical and experimental results. Furthermore, assumptions regarding the support conditions and neglecting residual damage from previous blast tests contributed to the underestimation of the displacements.

Book excerpt: Terrorist attacks and other destructive incidents caused by explosives have, in recent years, prompted considerable research and development into the protection of structures against blast loads. For this objective to be achieved, experiments have been performed and theoretical studies carried out to improve our assessments of the intensity as well as the space-time distribution of the resulting blast pressure on the one hand and the consequences of an explosion to the exposed environment on the other. This book aims to enhance awareness on and understanding of these topical issues through a collection of relevant, Transactions of the Wessex Institute of Technology articles written by experts in the field. The book starts with an overview of key physics-based algorithms for blast and fragment environment characterisation, structural response analyses and structural assessments with reference to a terrorist attack in an urban environment and the management of its inherent uncertainties.A subsequent group of articles is concerned with the accurate definition of blast pressure, which is an essential prerequisite to the reliable assessment of the consequences of an explosion. Other papers are concerned with alternative methods for the determination of blast pressure, based on experimental measurements or neural networks. A final group of articles reports investigations on predicting the response of specific structural entities and their contents. The book concludes with studies on the effectiveness of steel-reinforced polymer in improving the performance of reinforced concrete columns and the failure mechanisms of seamless steel pipes used in nuclear industry.

Book excerpt: A computer program was developed to determine the nonlinear dynamic response of reinnforced concrete slabs subjected to blast pressure loading. Given the explosive parameters and geometry of the slab, the program computes the blast environment and the structural resistance, mass, and stiffness of the slab and solves for the dynamic response. The program will assist engineers in the design and analysis of facilities intended to contain the effects of accidential explosions. The report gives a user's guide and sample problems with data input and program output. (Author).

Book excerpt: The civil engineering sector accounts for a significant percentage of global material and energy consumption and is a major contributor of waste material. The ability to recycle and reuse concrete and demolition waste is critical to reducing environmental impacts in meeting national, regional and global environmental targets. Handbook of recycled concrete and demolition waste summarises key recent research in achieving these goals. Part one considers techniques for managing construction and demolition waste, including waste management plans, ways of estimating levels of waste, the types and optimal location of waste recycling plants and the economics of managing construction and demolition waste. Part two reviews key steps in handling construction and demolition waste. It begins with a comparison between conventional demolition and construction techniques before going on to discuss the preparation, refinement and quality control of concrete aggregates produced from waste. It concludes by assessing the mechanical properties, strength and durability of concrete made using recycled aggregates. Part three includes examples of the use of recycled aggregates in applications such as roads, pavements, high-performance concrete and alkali-activated or geopolymer cements. Finally, the book discusses environmental and safety issues such as the removal of gypsum, asbestos and alkali-silica reaction (ASR) concrete, as well as life-cycle analysis of concrete with recycled aggregates. Book excerpt: Reinforced concrete is one of the prime building materials widely used to construct protective structures. One of the purposes of this project is to study the non-linear response of reinforced concrete structures when subjected to impact and blast loading. The study is conducted at two levels: material level and structural level. At the material level, the strength enhancement of three material models of LS-DYNA subjected to high strain rates is studied. The effects of strain rate and lateral inertial confinement on the strength enhancement are investigated. Recommendations are made to improve the accuracy of the results of future numerical simulations for reinforced concrete structures subjected to loads having high strain rates. At the structural level, Pressure-Impulse diagrams for reinforced concrete columns that have four configurations of transverse reinforcement are developed. Finite element modeling in LS-DYNA is used to analyze the structures and calculate the damage level for each blast event. The developed Pressure-Impulse diagrams are used to study the effect of confinement on the reduction of damage level at impulsive, dynamic, and quasi-static loading conditions.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforced concrete slab systems are widely used in protective structures designed to resist blast events. Blast events subject structures to high pressure and impulse loads. The magnitude of blast load experienced by a structural element is directly related to the exposed area. Hence protection of reinforced concrete slabs and walls, which constitute the maximum exposed area of a structure when subjected to blast loads, is of great importance. The main purpose of the project is to study the non-linear response of reinforced concrete slabs when subjected to impact and blast loading. Blast loading comprises of impulsive, dynamic and quasi-static loading conditions. And the performance of reinforced concrete slabs subjected to these loads is highly dependent upon the reinforcing steel provided in the slab. Hence a comprehensive analysis is performed on a representative slab panel with varying reinforcement. Due to the nature of the blast loading analysis method used influences the slab response significantly. Hence the slab response was predicted and compared using finite element (FE) and single degree of freedom (SDOF) methods. An advanced finite element modeling tool, LSDYNA and a commonly used SDOF analysis tool, SBEDS are employed for the purpose of analysis. A parametric analysis is conducted to develop Pressure-Impulse (PI) curves for different damage levels. Curve fit analysis was performed to characterize the PI curves generated from FE method. Conclusions and future work recommendations are presented for design of reinforced concrete slabs for blast protection based upon the research are presented and discussed.abstract.

Book excerpt: The existing methods to predict the blast effects on structures located behind blast walls are based on plane rigid walls and the results of small-scale studies, which are not validated by the results of full-scale experiments. Hence, they are only valid for a very limited range of scaled parameters. Also, they do not account for the impact of non-spherical charges or for different ignition points; they also put their emphasis on mid-and far-field overpressures. The current thesis investigates blast wave propagations created by cuboid charges and their effects on structural members at close-in and nearby ranges. First, a preliminary numerical study using the ProSAir FE program is performed to investigate the effectiveness of a plane and canopied rigid blast wall, which is subjected to a close-in explosion. It was found that, when a canopy was used with the wall, the wall was more effective in reducing the blast wave resultants on the building located behind the wall. As a part of this study, a High Speed Data Acquisition System was developed along with an in-house LabVIEW program to test the response of reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry walls, which were subjected to blast loading, and to measure the blast wave parameters. Half-scale blast experiments are conducted to investigate the effectiveness of reinforced concrete perimeter walls of different shapes in reducing the blast wave resultants along the height of a target building located behind a blast wall a wall as well as to determine the maximum damage that the wall could suffer without fragmentation. The effectiveness of reinforced concrete and walls coupled with a reduction in the street elevation adjacent to a wall's perimeter in reducing the blast wave resultants along the height of a target building located behind the wall was also investigated. It was found that changing the shape of the RC walls or erection of a plane blast wall combined with the lowering of adjacent street elevation could markedly reduce the blast wave resultants on structures located behind the walls. Full-scale blast experiments were also conducted to investigate the effectiveness of reinforced canopied walls as well as the effectiveness of double fully-grouted reinforced masonry walls infilled with polyurethane foam. The walls were tested both with and without aluminum foam retrofitting and tested using both close-in and nearby explosions. In addition, the reduction level of the blast wave resultants along the height of a target building located behind these walls was investigated. It was found that in addition to adding a canopy to the top of a reinforced concrete wall, or using a double reinforced masonry wall infilled with polyurethane foam, and retrofitting the walls with aluminum foam reduced the blast wave resultants on structures located behind these walls.

Book excerpt: Six explosive tests were conducted against reinforced concrete walls to determine the effect of steel reinforcement design on structural response and damage. Reinforcement percentages varying from 0.25 to 2.0 and two reinforcement designs (one with shear stirrups and one with shear dowels) were tested. Test specimens consisted of box structures with 32.5-cm-thick walls. Cased-explosive charges were detonated on the ground near one of the walls of the box. Test structures were instrumented to record blast-pressure loading, steel strains, wall deflection, in-structure acceleration, and concrete-spall velocities. Damage to the walls (similar for all tests, differing only in severity) consisted of a region near the bottom center where the concrete on the wall interior spalled and cracked coupled with a flexural-type response. The loading of the walls was more severe than predicted and the majority of the structural damage was due to spalling. (Author).
