Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of a symposium on "The Pulmonary Circulation" held at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture, in Erice, Sicily, between 16th July and 21st July 1979. This was attended by about 200 participants drawn from Europe as a whole, but the majority were from Southern Europe. The discussion was recorded either in English or Italian and the tapes were reduced to a verbatim typescript by the Ente Nazionale Interpeti Congresso. The verbatim typescript has been edited using a few guiding principles as foliows: Titles and honorifics have been eliminated unless the 1. statement is addressed to a specific person. The style of the speakers in the discussion has been 2. preserved as far as possible and not reduced to a strictly grammatical format. 3. Where references to illustrations (e.g., on the blackboard) are made, the comments have been left unaltered and many are understandable. Removing them detracted from the sense. 4. The air of informality in the proceedings has been preserved so far as possible. 5. The responsibility for the discussion rests solely with the editors, and no contributor has had the opportunity of correcting whae he said. No manuscript was received from one participant, but the 6. discussion of his presentation has been included since it contains some points of substance. G. Cumming and G. Book excerpt: Cardiovascular, respiratory, and related conditions cause more than 40 percent of all deaths globally, and their substantial burden is rising, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Their burden extends well beyond health effects to include significant economic and societal consequences. Most of these conditions are related, share risk factors, and have common control measures at the clinical, population, and policy levels. Lives can be extended and improved when these diseases are prevented, detected, and managed. This volume summarizes current knowledge and presents evidence-based interventions that are effective, cost-effective, and scalable in LMICs.

Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulmonary Circulation in Health and Disease covers the proceedings of a symposium purposed to create a more complete picture of the pulmonary circulation under normal and diseased conditions through the help of an interdisciplinary group of acknowledged experts. The book is divided into seven parts. The first part discusses morphology in relation to pulmonary circulation and includes an overview of the microscopic appearance of the pulmonary artery and the innervation of the pulmonary circulation, as well as the structure and infrastructure of the pulmonary microvasculature and the changes it undergoes. The second part concerns itself with the different pharmacological studies related to pulmonary circulation. The third part goes in-depth about concepts in pulmonary hemodynamics, such as its occlusion methods, its models based on anatomic and functional data, its active distribution, and gravity nondependent distribution of pulmonary blood flow; the fourth part on the other hand discusses pulmonary blood flow and gas exchange. The fifth part discusses pulmonary endothelial cells, its mechanisms, and its properties; the sixth and seventh parts cover the mechanisms of pulmonary hypertension. The text is recommended for basic scientists studying the lung and for clinicians such as cardiologists and pulmonologists. Those interested in the effects of alterations in lung function will also find this helpful.

Book excerpt: In summary, the mechanical integration of ventricular and pulmonary actions is determined by a number of mechanisms including airway pressure, pleural and pericardial pressure, state of the interventricular septum, and others. After this brief review of essential features, we may discuss some aspects of the interactions between heart and lung function. Influence of Intrathoracic Pressure: The Importance of Transmural Pressure It is established that blood pressure, volume and flow rates in the lesser circula tion change during each respiratory cycle. The effects of intrathoracic (Pit) and pleural (P pi) pressures, and lung volumes, were recently described in terms of ventricular preload and afterload during normal breathing, hyperventilation, and the Valsalva and Muller maneuvers [4, 7, 8]. Still, many aspects remain unsettled, mainly because of technical difficulties related to the simultaneous recording of floating respiratory and circulatory events in the intact animal or in man [9]. Some confusion arises from the clinicians' unawareness of the role played by the transmural pressure (Ptm), being the pressure gradient between the lumen of a vessel or heart chamber and the surrounding tissues (Pit for the pulmonary arteries and veins, and Ppe for the heart). Yet, an undetected change of Plm may modify vascular caliber and resistance in the pulmonary district, regardless of any changes in vasomotor activity. Consequently, a change of vascular resistance concomitant with a change of Ptm is not a reliable index of pulmonary vasomo tricity.

Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of a satellite symposium of the XXVllth International Congress of IUPS held in Berlin, July 12-15, 1977 the latest of a series of meetings dealing with the organization of the autonomic nervous system, especially its central nervous control (Warsaw 1971, Tokyo 1974, Heidelberg 1976). This was an occasion for the discussion of the rapidly increasing experience of laboratories and research groups in a number of countries. Interest is growing in the organization of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve supplies, and there is much new material derived largely from single unit re cordings within both central and peripheral nervous structures. It has long been known that various rhythms originating in central ner vous structures, including the respiratory rhythm, are reflected in autonomic outflows. Moreover, the autonomic responses themselves rarely appear in isolation, and are usually seen as part of patterns of change involving a number of organs and systems. These facts alone imply com plex interactions within the central nervous system, which indicate that studies of relationships between the relevant inputs, intrinsic central nervous activity and autonomic outputs constitute a special branch of neurophysiology which needs to be developed in order to gain insights into the forms of central nervous organization which are in volved.
