Book excerpt: Respect My Gangsta Part One Life of Sorrow For Sorrow Sanae' Hunter (affectionately known as Panther) life has designated struggle and death as her permanent shadows. The product of her mother's infidelity, the stage is set from birth for the abuse and neglect Sorrow will have to endure. If not for the love of her two brothers, she would surely perish in the bowels of the streets. And when the circumstances of their mother's reckless doped-up behavior led the brothers to drugs and murder Sorrow (unknowingly to them) becomes their willing protégé. They taught her how to hustle, protect herself, and, most importantly, make the world Respect Her Gangsta. And for a moment, she knew happiness. She even finds her first love. But there would be no fairytale endings for this little girl as the love she reveled in was suddenly taken away by a mindless act of violence. Sorrow's life spirals downhill, and her so-called mother takes her freedom away. Unable to stomach the horrific reality of the streets any longer, Sorrow enrolls in College. And vows never to deal with the street life again. With her new beginning, Sorrow falls for a college basketball player without ties to the streets. Sorrow felt safe for the first time in her life. But Duke, too, had demons. His secret desire to feel the respect his own brother earned in the streets constantly tormented him. When Duke gets the opportunity, it doesn't take much convincing for Duke to decide to take over the Cash Empire. Despite her love for Duke, will she stay with him after he gets involved with the thing she was trying to escape? When Duke has had his fill of playing gangster, will he take Sorrow down with him?

After his powerful, drug dealing father skips out on him and his mother, Goldi Dawson, finds himself trapped in the deadly, unforgiving trenches of Milwaukee, Wisconsin where the hustlers are cutthroat, and the shooters are remorseless. Goldi jumps off of the porch with the ambitions of a boss, and the drive of a hungry savage destined for success and riches. His goal is to bully the game and to take over the narcotics flow throughout the city. In an effort to crush all other dope boys, Goldi and his trusted gunner, 4-Gutta, form a vicious crew of money hungry animals that are dead set on ripping their oppositions to shreds all in the name of supremacy, and blood money. As Goldi begins his bloody rise to dominance, the sins of his father comes back to seek retribution on him and any of those close to him, including the irresistible and off limits, Ericka. Love turns to hate, and those that were once loyal become enemies. When jealousy, greed, double crossing, and vast riches are a part of the equation, betrayal is often the tragic conclusion. Will Goldi be able to take over the game and remain on top, or will the pressure of being the number one drug lord in the city cause he and his cartel to implode? Either way the slums of Milwaukee will never be the same.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making It Like a Man: Canadian Masculinities in Practice is a collection of essays on the practice of masculinities in Canadian arts and cultures, where to “make it like a man” is to participate in the cultural, sociological, and historical fluidity of ways of being a man in Canada, from the country’s origins in nineteenth-century Victorian values to its immersion in the contemporary post-modern landscape. The book focuses on the ways Canadian masculinities have been performed and represented through five broad themes: colonialism, nationalism, and transnationalism; emotion and affect; ethnic and minority identities; capitalist and domestic politics; and the question of men’s relationships with themselves and others. Chapters include studies of well-known and more obscure figures in the Canadian arts and culture scenes, such as visual artist Attila Richard Lukacs; writers Douglas Coupland, Barbara Gowdy, Simon Chaput, Thomas King, and James De Mille; filmmakers Clement Virgo, Norma Bailey, John N. Smith, and Frank Cole; as well as familiar and not-so-familiar tokens of Canadian masculinity such as the hockey hero, the gangsta rapper, the immigrant farmer, and the drag king. Making It Like a Man is the first book of its kind to explore and critique historical and contemporary masculinities in Canada with a special focus on artistic and cultural production and representation. It is concerned with mapping some of the uniquely Canadian places and spaces in the international field of masculinity studies, and will be of interest to academic and culturally informed audiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for anyone who has had their heart broken, soul wounded, faith tested, abandoned, rejected, or has suffered blow after blow, asking, "Can I get up? And even if I can eventually stand, how can I walk out and not let those blows, fire, and ashes show up in my tomorrow?" I don't want to look like, smell, or feel like what I've been through. Or maybe you're fighting with the shame and guilt of backsliding. You know God, but you keep hearing it's your fault because you're not strong enough. That's a lie from the pits of hell. First John 1 says that "it is true that we should walk with and talk with God continuously, and when we sin, confess it, and the blood of Christ cleanses continually." Because Revelations 12 says that "the enemy continually deceives and seduces the earth's inhabitants. He who brings charges against men and women day and night has been thrown out of heaven." And they overcame and conquered him because of the lamb's blood and because of their testimony's word, for they did not love their life and renounce their faith even when faced with death. (Revelations 12:11) Healing is a part of the work, but wholeness is the complete work; healing is a gift from God for His own, but wholeness is labor built by intention. I realized that my pain/cross was meant to be my oil or my mission of contributing to the world. This book addresses the false sense of security, the disillusioned identity, the emotionally scared, and the effects of scarcity of all other things, which seek to make us forfeit our power by using excuses and cycles. Until we are confronted and exposed by receiving God's Word, we are blind, deaf, lamed, and spiritually dead. I am encouraging all those who want to find themselves to start with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. They came together, in the beginning, to make us partakers in God's work to have dominion on earth and to expand the kingdom of heaven on earth, which that commandment will never be retracted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternatives Within the Mainstream: British Black and Asian Theatres is the first comprehensive collection of critical essays on the subject. Edited by Dimple Godiwala, the anthology is in six parts: A lengthy Introduction is followed by Part II (Histories and Trajectories) which contains chapters which survey the work of the Black Theatre Forum and the histories of Black and Asian theatres in Britain. Part III (Histories of Theatre Companies and Arts Venues) charts brief histories of the major theatre companies, Talawa, Tara and Tamasha and contains a survey of Birmingham’s changing arts venues. Part IV called simply Controversies is a document of the Sikh diaspora’s uproar over Behzti and issues of censorship. Part V (The Dramatists) critically explores the work of several dramatists such as Killion M. Gideon, Liselle Kayla, Roselia John Baptiste, Trish Cooke, Zindika, Jackie Kay, Valerie Mason-John, Wole Soyinka, Sol B. River, Roy Williams, Kwame Kwei-Armah, Anu Kumar, Rukhsana Ahmad, Bettina Gracias, Bapsi Sidhwa, Tanika Gupta, Deepak Verma, Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti and Yasmin Whittaker Khan. Part V (Theatre Voices) consists of autobiographical essays by some of Britain’s theatremakers. This contains contributions by Jatinder Verma, Yvonne Brewster, Sol B. River, Valerie Mason-John, Bapsi Sidhwa. A long overdue book which examines in imaginative depth the ‘universe inside’ an often trivialised area of British theatre. Alternatives Within The Mainstream provides serious academic opinion and detailed textual analysis in abundance. The book’s impressive collection of facts and analyses challenge the culture of myth which too often obscures the relevance of Black and Asian work. There are also many absorbing revelations: did you know, for instance, that Ignatius Sancho was Garrick’s friend? Yvonne Brewster

Book excerpt: Part 1: Gunz As a teenager growing up in Asbury Park, NJ, there were never many positive options for Rasheen Jordan to choose from. Where as most 15-year-old kids might participate in boy scouts or recreational baseball, for Rasheen it was either drug dealing or street gangs. He and his friends chose both. But as the glamorous street life seems to lose its luster, Rasheen seeks other options outside of the ghetto. And as his new exit path becomes clear, he finds out that the ghetto is not the only thing he will leave behind! Part II: Rosez Rasheen is a unique college student to say the least. At 18, he's probably experienced more than the average 80-year-old. Does he belong in this college setting? Is he just playing college student? The dime bags of weed and his other illegal behaviors might say so. But is it possible for Rasheen to become more than just a street thug? Is it possible for him to leave his past behind and become the "college boy" that he is destined to be?
