Download or read book Energy Security Cooperation in Northeast Asia written by Bo Kong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on cutting-edge research from leading scholars, this book investigates state preferences for regime creation and assesses state capacity for executing these preferences in Northeast Asia’s energy domain, defined as the geographical area comprising the following countries: Russia, Mongolia, China, Japan, South Korea and North Korea. It examines questions pertaining to how states perceive the need and necessity for establishing a regime when it comes to the issue of energy and how much commitment they make to the effort in Northeast Asia. The book analyses the factors that shape each country’s fundamental energy interests in the region, how these interests impact their attitudes toward engaging the region on energy security and the way they carry out their regional engagement. Based on countries’ interests in promoting institutionalized regional energy cooperation and their capacity for forging that cooperation, the collection assesses each state’s role in contributing to an energy regime in Northeast Asia. It then concludes with a critique on the decade-plus quest for energy security cooperation in Northeast Asia and suggests ways forward for facilitating regional energy security cooperation. This book will be of great interest to scholars and students of environmental policy, energy policy, security studies, Asian studies and international relations.

Book Synopsis Regional Environmental Politics in Northeast Asia by : Jeongwon Bourdais Park
Download or read book Regional Environmental Politics in Northeast Asia written by Jeongwon Bourdais Park and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The share of global CO2 emissions from the core Northeast Asian (NEA) countries in 2015 was estimated to be as high as 33.63 percent. Representing 28.21, 3.67, and 1.75 percent of total global emissions, China, Japan, and South Korea were ranked the first, fifth, and seventh largest contributors, respectively. Some parts of China, the Republic of Mongolia, the Russian Far East, and Southeast Asia have long been on serious alert due to accelerated deforestation. With their rapid population growth and economic development, the core countries of Northeast Asia are responsible both directly and indirectly for numerous environmental problems. Urgent individual and collective action is required from the region’s governments. Against the backdrop of debate on how to understand Northeast Asia as a "region," Park focuses on the major regional economies of China, Japan, and South Korea, along with Russia, North Korea, and the Republic of Mongolia, due to both their geopolitical proximity and their significance to the region. The author attempts to answer the questions: "How far has regional environmental cooperation progressed in Northeast Asia?"; and "Why are Northeast Asian countries reluctant to cooperate further on urgent transboundary and regional environmental issues?"

Book Synopsis Environmental Law Dimensions of Human Rights by : Ben Boer
Download or read book Environmental Law Dimensions of Human Rights written by Ben Boer and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-03-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we guarantee a right to life or a right to health without also guaranteeing a decent environment in which to exercise these rights? It is becoming increasingly obvious that a high quality environment is key to the fundamental human rights of life and health, and associated rights such as the right to clean water, adequate housing, and food. This book canvasses a range of law and policy issues concerning human rights and the environment. Each chapter examines an aspect of the links between environmental law and human rights in substantive and/or procedural terms, loosely falling into four themes: human rights and the environment in the context of the private sector; analysis of decisions of the European and Inter-American courts in respect of substantive and procedural aspects; human rights and the environment in the Asian region, including the issue of human displacement; and the future direction of human rights and environment law.
Book Synopsis The Environmental Dimension of Asian Security by : In-tʻaek Hyŏn
Download or read book The Environmental Dimension of Asian Security written by In-tʻaek Hyŏn and published by US Institute of Peace Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northeast Asia is a region with highly disparate levels of industrialization and political systems. It also contains some very troubling security flashpoints the Taiwan Strait, the Korean Peninsula, and the East China Sea. China s rapacious quest for energy and rapid industrial expansion have led to intense international competition with Japan and the United States and internal instability as well. North Korea poses two distinct environmental security threats: famine refugees and the regime s use of nuclear blackmail for subsidized energy. Yet there is very little regional cooperation, despite the need to manage disputes over energy, natural resources, and pervasive pollution. The Environmental Dimension of Asian Security examines these issues through a regional environmental security complex that explores the potential for greater intersubjective understandings of regional environmental and natural resource problems and greater institutional collaboration and management."

Book Synopsis China - Neighboring Asian Countries Relations by : Li Xiangyang
Download or read book China - Neighboring Asian Countries Relations written by Li Xiangyang and published by Paths International Ltd. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China has a myriad and diverse range of neighbours who are significant in their own right but are also of global importance. Asia accounts for 25% of global GDP.This book evaluates the potential for both co-operation and conflict within the Asian region Border problems and historical problems are still plaguing countries in the region and are affecting the relations between them. China and India have not yet resolved their land frontier issues. Furthermore, China has maritime disputes with Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The historical issues among China, Japan, and South Korea make the cooperation between them lack a basis of political mutual trust. Therefore, although there are close trade contacts among these countries, China, Japan, and South Korea have not reached any FTA. In South Asia, because of long-term India-Pakistan conflicts, South Asia's Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) has been useless and is unable to effectively promote regional economic cooperation, which is a factor in pushing India to develop towards the East. These unstable factors have not only hindered the formation of long-term institutional arrangements on economic and trade cooperation within the region, but have also caused various unexpected events to disrupt existing cooperation. Throughout this book economic data and analysis is provided which gives an insight into the trade and financial links that bind this region together. Written by experts in China it gives a fascinating view of China's approach to its neighbours. China is assuming a more important role on the world stage but it is important to not forget the key role it plays in its own neighbourhood.
