Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What we wish to offer you, then, is an updated professional resource that combines both clinical and scientific perspectives. We hope this book will be helpful to professionals who are already treating addictive disorders and also to those who are just learning how to treat addictions. We also encourage health professionals more generally to think of addictions as falling within their own normal scope of work, and we have kept this in mind in our writing. In addiction treatment, it makes a difference what you do and how you do it, and it is far easier to develop evidence-based practice from the outset than to change already established habits."--Page x.

It uses a biopsychosocial framework to integrate the many factors that contribute to addictions, from genetic predispositions, neurological responses caused by drugs, co-occurring psychiatric disorders, personality traits, and developmental conditions to cultural influences. Real-life vignettes and first-person accounts build understanding of the lived experience of addiction. The currently accepted practices for diagnosis and treatment are presented, including the role of 12-step programmes and other mutual-assistance groups. The text also investigates the research methods that form the foundation of evidence-based knowledge. The main body text is augmented by study guideposts such as learning objectives, review exercises, highlighted key terms, and chapter summaries, which enable more efficient comprehension and retention of the book's material.
Book Synopsis Comprehensive Case Management for Substance Abuse Treatment - TIP 27 by : U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Download or read book Comprehensive Case Management for Substance Abuse Treatment - TIP 27 written by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-11-23 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case management has been variously classified as a skill group, a core function, service coordination, or a network of "friendly neighbors." Although it defies precise definition, case management generally can be described as a coordinated approach to the delivery of health, substance abuse, mental health, and social services, linking clients with appropriate services to address specific needs and achieve stated goals. The Consensus Panel that developed this TIP believes that case management lends itself to the treatment of substance abuse, particularly for clients with other disorders and conditions who require multiple services over extended periods of time and who face difficulty in gaining access to those services. This document details the factors that programs should consider as they decide to implement case management or modify their current case management activities. This summary is excerpted from the main text, in which references to the research appear.

Book Synopsis TIP 35: Enhancing Motivation for Change in Substance Use Disorder Treatment (Updated 2019) by : U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Download or read book TIP 35: Enhancing Motivation for Change in Substance Use Disorder Treatment (Updated 2019) written by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivation is key to substance use behavior change. Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.
