Book Synopsis Structural Tests on Space Shuttle Thermal Protection System Constructed with Nondensified and Densified Li 900 and LI 2200 Tile by : Jerry G. Williams
Download or read book Structural Tests on Space Shuttle Thermal Protection System Constructed with Nondensified and Densified Li 900 and LI 2200 Tile written by Jerry G. Williams and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural tests were conducted on thermal protection system (TPS) including LI 900 and LI 2200 tiles and .41 cm (.16 in) and .23 cm (.09 in) thick strain isolation pads (SIP). In addition, the bond surface of selected tiles was densified to obtain improved strength. Four basic types of experiments were conducted including tension tests, substrate mismatch (initial imperfection) tests, tension loads eccentrically applied, and pressure loads applied rapidly to the tile top surface. A small initial imperfection mismatch (2.29 m (90 in.) spherical radius on the substrate) did not influence significantly the ultimate failure strength. Densification of the tile bond region improved the strength of TPS constructed both of LI 900 tile and of LI 2200 tile. Pressure shock conditions studied did not significantly affect the TPS strength.

This book was released on 1973 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of a reusable space shuttle by NASA in the next decade depends in part on the design of a satisfactory thermal protection system (TPS). The booster and orbiter parts of the shuttle require TPS panels which will withstand thermoacoustic fatigue. The Langley Research Center has begun tests on early panel designs in a new acoustic fatigue facility which is capable of simulating the combined elevated temperature and acoustic environments which these panels are expected to experience. The capabilities of the facility and computer system are outlined, and problems encountered in establishing the test methods are discussed. The digital computer system which controls the acoustic and thermal test sequence and which records data from more than 20 transducers is described. Tests of a Haynes 25 TPS panel are described, and representative data from tests of the panel at 650 C are included.

Book excerpt: The objective of the current study was to assess the repeatability of experiments at NASA Langley's Thermal Acoustic Fatigue Apparatus (TAFA) facility and to use these experiments to validate numerical models. Experiments show that power spectral density (PSD) curves were repeatable except at the resonant frequencies, which tended to vary between 5 Hz to 15 Hz. Results show that the thinner specimen had more variability in the resonant frequency location than the thicker sample, especially for modes higher than the first mode in the frequency range. Root Mean Square (RMS) tended to be more repeatable. The RMS behaved linearly through the SPL range of 135 to 153 dB. Standard Deviations (STDs) of the results tended to be relatively low constant up to about 147 dB. The RMS results were more repeatable than the PDS results. The STD results were less than 10% of the RMS results for both the 0.125 in (0.318 cm) and 0.062 in (0.1588 cm) thick plate. The STD of the PSD results were around 20% to 100% of the mean PSD results for non-resonant and resonant frequencies, respectively, for the 0.125 in (0.318 cm) thicker plate and between 25% to 125% of the mean PSD results, for nonresonant and resonant frequencies, respectively, for the thinner plate.Betts, Juan F.Langley Research CenterDYNAMIC RESPONSE; RESONANT FREQUENCIES; DYNAMIC STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS; POWER SPECTRA; MATHEMATICAL MODELS; MEAN SQUARE VALUES; STANDARD DEVIATION

Book Synopsis Thermostructural Evaluation of Joggle Region on the Shuttle Orbiter's Wing Leading Edge by : National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was initiated to determine the cause of coating spallation occurring on the Shuttle Orbiter's wing leading edge panels in the slip-side joggle region. The coating spallation events were observed, post flight, on differing panels on different missions. As part of the investigation, the high re-entry heating occurring on the joggles was considered here as a possible cause. Thus, a thermostructural evaluation was conducted to determine the detailed state-of-stress in the joggle region during re-entry and the feasibility of a laboratory test on a local joggle specimen to replicate this state-of-stress. A detailed three-dimensional finite element model of a panel slip-side joggle region was developed. Parametric and sensitivity studies revealed significant stresses occur in the joggle during peak heating. A critical interlaminar normal stress concentration was predicted in the substrate at the coating interface and was confined to the curved joggle region. Specifically, the high interlaminar normal stress is identified to be the cause for the occurrence of failure in the form of local subsurface material separation occurring in the slip-side joggle. The predicted critical stresses are coincident with material separations that had been observed with microscopy in joggle specimens obtained from flight panels. Walker, Sandra P. and Warren, Jerry E. Book Synopsis Structural Design and Analysis of a Rigidizable Space Shuttle Experiment by :
Download or read book Structural Design and Analysis of a Rigidizable Space Shuttle Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AFIT is in the process of designing a Space Shuttle experiment designated as the Rigidized Inflatable Get-Away-Special Experiment (RIGEX) to study the effects of microgravity on the deployment of rigidizable composite structures. Once in space, the experiment will inflate and rigidize three composite structures and perform a vibration analysis on each by exciting the tubes using piezoelectric patches and collecting data via an accelerometer. This paper presents the structural and vibration analysis of the RIGEX assembly and inflatable composite tubes using ABAQUS Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software. Comparison of the analysis has been carried out with Eigenvalue/Eigenvector experimentation by means of ping testing. This FEA analysis has been used to verify the natural frequency and structural integrity of the RIGEX support assemblies. The ABAQUS FEA results correlated to within 20% of experimental values.

Book Synopsis Acoustic Emission Testing by : Christian U. Grosse
Download or read book Acoustic Emission Testing written by Christian U. Grosse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-12 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic Emission (AE) techniques have been studied in civil engineering for a long time. The techniques are recently going to be more and more applied to practical applications and to be standardized in the codes. This is because the increase of aging structures and disastrous damages due to recent earthquakes urgently demand for maintenance and retrofit of civil structures in service for example. It results in the need for the development of advanced and effective inspection techniques. Thus, AE techniques draw a great attention to diagnostic applications and in material testing. The book covers all levels from the description of AE basics for AE beginners (level of a student) to sophisticated AE algorithms and applications to real large-scale structures as well as the observation of the cracking process in laboratory specimen to study fracture processes.
