The longer paper in Part A obtains necessary and sufficient conditions for several types of codings of Markov chains onto Bernoulli shifts. It proceeds by replacing the defining stochastic matrix of each Markov chain by a matrix whose entries are polynomials with positive coefficients in several variables; a Bernoulli shift is represented by a single polynomial with positive coefficients, $p$. This transforms jointly topological and measure-theoretic coding problems into combinatorial ones. In solving the combinatorial problems in Part A, the work states and makes use of facts from Part B concerning $p DEGREESn$ and its coefficients. Part B contains the shorter paper on $p DEGREESn$ and its coefficients, and is independ

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symbolic dynamics originated as a tool for analyzing dynamical systems and flows by discretizing space as well as time. The development of information theory gave impetus to the study of symbol sequences as objects in their own right. Today, symbolic dynamics has expanded to encompass multi-dimensional arrays of symbols and has found diverse applications both within and beyond mathematics. This volume is based on the AMS Short Course on Symbolic Dynamics and its Applications. It contains introductory articles on the fundamental ideas of the field and on some of its applications. Topics include the use of symbolic dynamics techniques in coding theory and in complex dynamics, the relation between the theory of multi-dimensional systems and the dynamics of tilings, and strong shift equivalence theory. Contributors to the volume are experts in the field and are clear expositors. The book is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in symbolic dynamics and its applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly one hundred years ago Jacques Hadamard used infinite sequences of symbols to analyze the distribution of geodesics on certain surfaces. That was the beginning of symbolic dynamics. In the 1930's and 40's Arnold Hedlund and Marston Morse again used infinite sequences to investigate geodesics on surfaces of negative curvature. They coined the term symbolic dynamics and began to study sequence spaces with the shift transformation as dynamical systems. In the 1940's Claude Shannon used sequence spaces to describe infor mation channels. Since that time symbolic dynamics has been used in ergodic theory, topological dynamics, hyperbolic dynamics, information theory and complex dynamics. Symbolic dynamical systems with a finite memory are stud ied in this book. They are the topological Markov shifts. Each can be defined by transition rules and the rules can be summarized by a transition matrix. The study naturally divides into two parts. The first part is about topological Markov shifts where the alphabet is finite. The second part is concerned with topological Markov shifts whose alphabet is count ably infinite. The techniques used in the two cases are quite different. When the alphabet is finite most of the methods are combinatorial or algebraic. When the alphabet is infinite the methods are much more analytic. This book grew from notes for a graduate course taught at Wesleyan Uni versity in the fall of 1994 and is intended as a graduate text and as a reference book for mathematicians working in related fields.

Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications COMBINATORIAL AND GRAPH-THEORETICAL PROBLEMS IN LINEAR ALGEBRA is based on the proceedings of a workshop that was an integral part of the 1991-92 IMA program on "Applied Linear Algebra." We are grateful to Richard Brualdi, George Cybenko, Alan George, Gene Golub, Mitchell Luskin, and Paul Van Dooren for planning and implementing the year-long program. We especially thank Richard Brualdi, Shmuel Friedland, and Victor Klee for organizing this workshop and editing the proceedings. The financial support of the National Science Foundation made the workshop possible. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. PREFACE The 1991-1992 program of the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) was Applied Linear Algebra. As part of this program, a workshop on Com binatorial and Graph-theoretical Problems in Linear Algebra was held on November 11-15, 1991. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together in an informal setting the diverse group of people who work on problems in linear algebra and matrix theory in which combinatorial or graph~theoretic analysis is a major com ponent. Many of the participants of the workshop enjoyed the hospitality of the IMA for the entire fall quarter, in which the emphasis was discrete matrix analysis.

Book excerpt: One of the major topics in symbolic dynamics is the analysis of the dynamical systems defined by endomorphisms and automorphisms of subshifts. This includes analysis of the dynamical behavior of one-dimensional cellular automata as a special case. In this work, Nasu introduces the notion of a textile system, which is useful in analyzing the dynamical systems defined by endomorphisms and automorphisms of topological Markov shifts, including one-sided ones. The dynamical properties of automorphisms of sofic systems are also studied. Requiring few prerequisites, this work will appeal not only to specialists in symbolic dynamics but also to nonspecialists interested in symbolic dynamics and those interested in analysis of the dynamical behavior of cellular automata.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the first Abel Symposium, held in 2004, the Abel Symposium 2015 focused on operator algebras. It is interesting to see the remarkable advances that have been made in operator algebras over these years, which strikingly illustrate the vitality of the field. A total of 26 talks were given at the symposium on a variety of themes, all highlighting the richness of the subject. The field of operator algebras was created in the 1930s and was motivated by problems of quantum mechanics. It has subsequently developed well beyond its initial intended realm of applications and expanded into such diverse areas of mathematics as representation theory, dynamical systems, differential geometry, number theory and quantum algebra. One branch, known as “noncommutative geometry”, has become a powerful tool for studying phenomena that are beyond the reach of classical analysis. This volume includes research papers that present new results, surveys that discuss the development of a specific line of research, and articles that offer a combination of survey and research. These contributions provide a multifaceted portrait of beautiful mathematics that both newcomers to the field of operator algebras and seasoned researchers alike will appreciate.

His main areas of research are represented in the three sections, `Numbers and Combinations', `Information Theory (Channels and Networks, Combinatorial and Algebraic Coding, Cryptology, with the related fields Data Compression, Entropy Theory, Symbolic Dynamics, Probability and Statistics)', and `Complexity'. Special attention was paid to the interplay between the fields. Surveys on topics of current interest are included as well as new research results. The book features surveys on Combinatorics about topics such as intersection theorems, which are not yet covered in textbooks, several contributions by leading experts in data compression, and relations to Natural Sciences are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed as an introduction into what I call 'abstract' Topological Dynamics (TO): the study of topological transformation groups with respect to problems that can be traced back to the qualitative theory of differential equa is in the tradition of the books [GH] and [EW. The title tions. So this book (,Elements . . . ' rather than 'Introduction . . . ') does not mean that this book should be compared, either in scope or in (intended) impact, with the 'Ele ments' of Euclid or Bourbaki. Instead, it reflects the choice and organisation of the material in this book: elementary and basic (but sufficient to understand recent research papers in this field). There are still many challenging prob lems waiting for a solution, and especially among general topologists there is a growing interest in this direction. However, the technical inaccessability of many research papers makes it almost impossible for an outsider to under stand what is going on. To a large extent, this inaccessability is caused by the lack of a good and systematic exposition of the fundamental methods and techniques of abstract TO. This book is an attempt to fill this gap. The guiding principle for the organization of the material in this book has been the exposition of methods and techniques rather than a discussion of the leading problems and their solutions. though the latter are certainly not neglected: they are used as a motivation wherever possible.
