Download or read book Famine Demography written by Tim Dyson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the important subject of famine demography. It describes case studies of the demography of historical and more recent famines in locations as far apart as Ireland, Finland, India, Burundi, Russia, Greece, Madagascar, and Japan. The authors concern themselves with significant issues such as the role of famines in controlling population growth in the past, the nature of interactions between starvation and epidemic diseases during times of famine, and the detailed demographic consequences of famines. In the latter category issues such as the age and cause-specific profiles of excess famine mortality receive particular attention. This is the only comparative volume of its kind. It is wide-ranging in time and place, but at the same time focuses sharply on a particular subject. Consequently its contents provide a unique understanding of famine demography.

Download or read book Barbed-Wire Imperialism written by Aidan Forth and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Camps are emblems of the modern world, but they first appeared under the imperial tutelage of Victorian Britain. Comparative and transnational in scope, Barbed-Wire Imperialism situates the concentration and refugee camps of the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) within longer traditions of controlling the urban poor in metropolitan Britain and managing "suspect" populations in the empire. Workhouses and prisons, along with criminal tribe settlements and enclosures for the millions of Indians displaced by famine and plague in the late nineteenth century, offered early prototypes for mass encampment. Venues of great human suffering, British camps were artifacts of liberal empire that inspired and legitimized the practices of future regimes.

Book Synopsis Beastly encounters of the Raj by : Saurabh Mishra
Download or read book Beastly encounters of the Raj written by Saurabh Mishra and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length monograph to examine the history of colonial medicine in India from the perspective of veterinary health. The history of human health in the subcontinent has received a fair amount of attention in the last few decades, but nearly all existing texts have completely ignored the question of animal health. This book will not only fill this gap, but also provide fresh perspectives and insights that might challenge existing arguments. At the same time, this volume is a social history of cattle in India. Keeping the question of livestock at the centre, it explores a range of themes such as famines, agrarian relations, urbanisation, middle-class attitudes, caste formations etc. The overall aim is to integrate medical history with social history in a way that has not often been attempted.

Download or read book Global Rupture written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Rupture makes a key intervention in debates on informal and precarious labour. Increasing recognition that informal and precarious labour is an enduring reality under neo-liberal capitalism, and the norm globally, rather than the exception has ignited debates around analytical frames, activist strategies and development interventions. This pathbreaking volume provides a corrective through drawing upon theoretically informed rich case studies from the world outside of North America, Europe, and Australasia. Each contribution converges on the enduring and expanding significance of informal and precarious work within the Global South—the most significant factor in preventing a worldwide decent work agenda. *Global Rupture: Neoliberal Capitalism and the Rise of Informal Labour in the Global South is now available in paperback for individual customers.
