Book excerpt: LA PREMIERE PARTIE DE CE TRAVAIL DE THESE EST CONSACRE A L’ETUDE DE LA METHODE DE VOLUMES FINIS POUR LES LOIS DE CONSERVATION HYPERBOLIQUES SUR UNE VARIETE. NOUS ETUDIONS TOUT D’ABORD UNE PREMIERE APPROCHE QUI NECESSITE L’EXISTENCE D’UNE METRIQUE LORENTZIENNE. NOTRE RESULTAT PRINCIPAL ETABLIT LA CONVERGENCE DE SCHEMAS DE VOLUMES FINIS DU PREMIER ORDRE POUR UNE LARGE CLASSE DE MAILLAGES. ENSUITE, NOUS PROPOSONS UNE NOUVELLE APPROCHE BASEE SUR DES CHAMPS DE FORMES DIFFERENTIELLES. DANS CE TRAVAIL, NOUS INTRODUISONS UNE NOUVELLE VERSION DE LA METHODE DE VOLUMES FINIS, QUI REQUIERT UNIQUEMENT LA STRUCTURE DE N-FORME SUR UNE VARIETE DE DIMENSION (N + 1). LA SECONDE PARTIE PORTE SUR LES ESTIMATIONS D’ERREUR POUR LA METHODE DE VOLUMES FINIS ET SUR LA MISE EN ŒUVRE D’UN MODELE DE FLUIDES. NOUS CONSIDERONS TOUT D’ABORD LES LOIS DE CONSERVATION HYPERBOLIQUES POSEES SUR UNE VARIETE RIEMANNIENNE ET NOUS ETABLISSONS UNE ESTIMATION D’ERREUR EN NORME L1 POUR UNE CLASSE DE SCHEMAS DE VOLUMES FINIS POUR L’APPROXIMATION DES SOLUTIONS ENTROPIQUES DU PROBLEME DE CAUCHY. NOUS ETUDIONS ENSUITE LES EQUATIONS HYPERBOLIQUES POSEES SUR UN ESPACE-TEMPS COURBE. EN IMPOSANT QUE LE FLUX VERIFIE UNE PROPRIETE NATURELLE D’INVARIANCE DE LORENTZ, NOUS IDENTIFIONS UNE LOI DE CONSERVATION UNIQUE A UNE NORMALISATION PRES, QUI PEUT ETRE VUE COMME UNE VERSION RELATIVISTE DE L’EQUATION CLASSIQUE DE BURGER

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide an elementary yet systematic description of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations, their unique symmetry properties and their relation to Green’s function theory. Specifically, it introduces readers to the supercell technique for the solutions of the BdG equations, as well as other related techniques for more rapidly solving the equations in practical applications. The BdG equations are derived from a microscopic model Hamiltonian with an effective pairing interaction and fully capture the local electronic structure through self-consistent solutions via exact diagonalization. This approach has been successfully generalized to study many aspects of conventional and unconventional superconductors with inhomogeneities – including defects, disorder or the presence of a magnetic field – and becomes an even more attractive choice when the first-principles information of a typical superconductor is incorporated via the construction of a low-energy tight-binding model. Further, the lattice BdG approach is essential when theoretical results for local electronic states around such defects are compared with the scanning tunneling microscopy measurements. Altogether, these lectures provide a timely primer for graduate students and non-specialist researchers, while also offering a useful reference guide for experts in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This didactic book presents the main elements of acoustics, aeroacoustics and vibrations. Illustrated with numerous concrete examples linked to solid and fluid continua, Acoustics, Aeroacoustics and Vibrations proposes a selection of applications encountered in the three fields, whether in room acoustics, transport, energy production systems or environmental problems. Theoretical approaches enable us to analyze the different processes in play. Typical results, mostly from numerical simulations, are used to illustrate the main phenomena (fluid acoustics, radiation, diffraction, vibroacoustics, etc.).

Book excerpt: Honoring the contributions of one of the field's leading experts, Lu Ting, this indispensable volume contains important new results at the cutting edge of research. A wide variety of significant new analytical and numerical results in critical areas are presented, including point vortex dynamics, superconductor vortices, cavity flows, vortex breakdown, shock/vortex interaction, wake flows, magneto-hydrodynamics, rotary wake flows, and hypersonic vortex phenomena. The book will be invaluable for those interested in the state of the art of vortex dominated flows, both from a theoretical and applied perspective.Professor Lu Ting and Joe Keller have worked together for over 40 years. In their first joint work entitled ?Periodic vibrations of systems governed by nonlinear partial differential equations?, perturbation analysis and bifurcation theory were used to determine the frequencies and modes of vibration of various physical systems. The novelty was the application to partial differential equations of methods which, previously, had been used almost exclusively on ordinary differential equations. Professsor Lu Ting is an expert in both fluid dynamics and the use of matched asymptotic expansions. His physical insight into fluid flows has led the way to finding the appropriate mathematical simplications used in the solutions to many difficult flow problems.
