Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthquake engineering is the ultimate challenge for structural engineers. Even if natural phenomena involve great uncertainties, structural engineers need to design buildings, bridges, and dams capable of resisting the destructive forces produced by them. These disasters have created a new awareness about the disaster preparedness and mitigation. Before a building, utility system, or transportation structure is built, engineers spend a great deal of time analyzing those structures to make sure they will perform reliably under seismic and other loads. The purpose of this book is to provide structural engineers with tools and information to improve current building and bridge design and construction practices and enhance their sustainability during and after seismic events. In this book, Khan explains the latest theory, design applications and Code Provisions. Earthquake-Resistant Structures features seismic design and retrofitting techniques for low and high raise buildings, single and multi-span bridges, dams and nuclear facilities. The author also compares and contrasts various seismic resistant techniques in USA, Russia, Japan, Turkey, India, China, New Zealand, and Pakistan. Written by a world renowned author and educator Seismic design and retrofitting techniques for all structures Tools improve current building and bridge designs Latest methods for building earthquake-resistant structures Combines physical and geophysical science with structural engineering

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking Wittgenstein's "Don't think, but look" as his motto, Richard Strier argues against the application of a priori schemes to Renaissance (and all) texts. He argues for the possibility and desirability of rigorously attentive but "pre-theoretical" reading. His approach privileges particularity and attempts to respect the "resistant structures" of texts. He opposes theories, critical and historical, that dictate in advance what texts must—or cannot—say or do. The first part of the book, "Against Schemes," demonstrates, in discussions of Rosemond Tuve, Stephen Greenblatt, and Stanley Fish among others, how both historicist and purely theoretical approaches can equally produce distortion of particulars. The second part, "Against Received Ideas," shows how a variety of texts (by Shakespeare, Donne, Herbert, and others) have been seen through the lenses of fixed, mainly conservative ideas in ways that have obscured their actual, surprising, and sometimes surprisingly radical content.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an analysis procedure for structures that are exposed to the lateral loads such as earthquake and wind. It includes the process for calculating and distributing the effective load into structural elements, as well as for calculating the displacements for different types of structures, e.g. reinforced concrete and steel framed structures. The book provides civil engineers with clear guidelines on how to perform seismic analysis for various building systems, and how to distribute the lateral load to the structural components. This book consists of 4 chapters: The first chapter offers an introduction, while Chapter 2 discusses moment resistance frame. The final two chapters explore shear wall frames and brace frames respectively. Each chapter follows the same structure, explaining step by step all the necessary algorithms, equations and procedures for calculating 1) loads, 2) the centre of mass, 3) stiffness of structures, 4) centre of stiffness, 5) lateral loading, 6) the distribution of lateral loads, and 7) the lateral displacement. Demonstrating the implementation of real building analysis, the book provides architectural drawings and structural plans at the beginning of each chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades, a considerable amount of experimental and analytical research on the seismic behaviour of masonry walls and buildings has been carried out. The investigations resulted in the development of methods for seismic analysis and design, as well as new technologies and construction systems. After many centuries of traditional use and decades of allowable stress design, clear concepts for limit state verification of masonry buildings under earthquake loading have recently been introduced in codes of practice. Although this book is not a review of the state-of-the-art of masonry structures in earthquake zones, an attempt has been made to balance the discussion on recent code requirements, state-of-the-art methods of earthquake-resistant design and the author's research work, in order to render the book useful for a broader application in design practice. An attempt has also been made to present, in a condensed but easy to understand way, all the information needed for earthquake-resistant design of masonry buildings constructed using traditional systems. The basic concepts of limit state verification are presented and equations for seismic resistance verification of masonry walls of all types of construction, (unreinforced, confined and reinforced) as well as masonry-infilled reinforced concrete frames, are addressed. A method for seismic resistance verification, compatible with recent code requirements, is also discussed. In all cases, experimental results are used to explain the proposed methods and equations. An important part of this book is dedicated to the discussion of the problems of repair, retrofit and rehabilitation of existing masonry buildings, including historical structures in urban centres. Methods of strengthening masonry walls as well as improving the structural integrity of existing buildings are described in detail. Wherever possible, experimental evidence regarding the effectiveness of the proposed strengthening methods is given. Book excerpt: Ground motion due to earthquake excitation often induces disastrous disturbances that severely damage structures and their contents. Conventional earthquake-resistant design focuses on the strengthening of structures to avoid collapse, while little attention is paid to the prevention of damage as it is almost impossible to construct completely earthquake proof structures at reasonable cost. This state-of-the-art volume explores seismic isolation as an alternative and performance-based design approach to minimise earthquake induced loads and resulting damage in low to medium-rise buildings. A discussion of the characteristics, advantages and limitations of seismic isolation is followed by a demonstration of its capability to decouple a structure from the damaging effects of ground acceleration. Describes currently used seismic isolation systems in detail. Evaluates the performance of seismically isolated structures and provides examples of their response under earthquake action. Proposes a preliminary design methodology for seismically isolated structures. Accessible to both students and practising structural engineers who need to familiarise themselves with this approach.

Book excerpt: Containing the latest research on preparation for and mitigation of future earthquakes, this book addresses an area of increasing importance to many areas around the world. It contains research presented at the ninth and latest in a series of biennial conferences on the topic organised by the Wessex Institute. As world population has concentrated in urban areas, we have seen the consequences of natural disasters take an ever higher toll in human life and property. Adding to this trend, earthquake activity is being registered in areas that were not previously very active, thus the need for research into the application of technological advances to the specific area of earthquake engineering. This volume presents those advances. The papers cover Seismic Isolation and Energy Dissipation; Building Performance During Earthquakes; Nonlinear Numerical Analysis; Performance Based Design; Experimental Studies; Seismic Hazard Evaluation and Microzoning for Structural Design; Seismic Hazard Assessment; Case Studies.
